Wow! 2M Playing WoW!

World of Warcraft Achieves New Milestone with Two Million Paying Subscribers is the press release announcing a new subscription threshold achieved by Blizzard's MMORPG, with further breakthroughs expected when the game launches in China:
World of Warcraft recently surpassed the two million mark for paying subscribers. Already the largest MMO in both North America and Europe, Blizzard expects to see even greater growth with the recent commercial launch in China on June 7, 2005. Anticipation for World of Warcraft was already at an all-time high in China, with peak concurrency during the open beta test topping 500,000 players, nearly equal to World of Warcraft's peak concurrency in all three current markets combined. Blizzard expects to see the new mark of two million subscribers shattered quickly with the arrival of players from China in the coming weeks.

Simply put you haven't played it long enough to enjoy it. Doesn't matter what game you play, the newb stuff always sucks! That's how most games are. All the end-game content is what matters most, and unfortunately that'll take anywhere from 2-6 months or more to get to. That's just the way things are.

Excuse me, I have a job and school for that. I work to get a paycheck and learn to increase the size of that paycheck. I'm not looking to do that in my spare time.

On this subject.. sorta..

I actually just bought a little slice of Real Estate in Second Life recently. I've always had a huge interest in Virtual Reality, and being an IT guy since '92 or so, I've always been interested in what will take the WWW from 2D to 3D.

I guess Second life is probably the closest thing we have to that, since VRML is pretty much dead. It's privately owned, but it's setting some interesting goals.

If you are interested in the idea of having some 3D space online to express yourself however you wish, then check out Second Life. It's not so much a game as it is a virtual world that centers around personal creativity. There is a large social aspect of it too if you wish.

The land I bought right now has a cool tropical themed tiki hut paradise that I built using the in game tools. They have a complex scripting system, 3D tools, upload your own textures (and yes, anything goes), etc. I don't hang out in there a lot cause my real life keeps me busy, but I do use it as a personal creative outlet. It's also fun to see what other people have dreamed up.

For example, I was talking to a woman last night who used the SL scripting language to start programming a school of fish she constructed so that they have basic AI capabilities such as flocking/schooling. She is now working on a DNA system so they can breed and pass along trates. It's sort of like a home made Darwin experiment. Very cool. She's not a programmer.

The recently added the ability for you to stream video up to your land in the game, and they are adding in game web browsers based on Mozilla. Streaming music (audio) up to your land via shoutcast has been in for a long time.

Creston, I guess the monthely fees are a matter of opinion. I simply compare them to other things I do each month that entertain me. I pay for cable TV, Internet connection, I go to movies, rent movies, buy magazines, play paintball, take my boat out, camp, hike, etc. All these things have a monthly impact on my bank account.

Just because it's a game, doesn't make it less worthy of a monthly payment for me.... as long as it's a GOOD game.

The high end PvE game is more loot dependent. Getting the best loot definitely helps with the encounters in molten core and with onyxia, but everything else from 1-60 isn't a big deal with standard gear. Another higher end instance/dungeon is going to be released that's casual friendly for a gamer who only has an hour or two to get some decent loot.

PvP has rewards of gear for those attain higher PvP ranks and this gear is more suited for PvP (higher stamina, hitpoints for casters). So, you don't necessarily want or need to PvE to PvP.. once you reach level 60. But even the the best loot won't make you a PvP god compared to someone with decent "blue" or even "green" items.

I actually started Star Wars Galaxies as my first ever MMORPG shortly after it went gold. I've played it off and on since. Tried EQ2, wasn't impressed. I don't like 3rd person view, so GW is out of the question for me... not to mention that I HATE HATE HATE "Fantasy" themed games.

I recently cancelled because it just gets too stale. I really like the persistant aspect of the games. It's much more like a virtual world then any other game type. There just isn't enough options to make the experience unique, and I'd like to see the games evolve toward some sort of Dynamic quests system instead of this stale static stuff.

I will probably stay away from MMORPG's until they evolve a lot further, but the draw is there for me.

I've played Ultima Online, Meridian 59, Asheron's Call 1 & 2, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, Magic: The Gathering online, Star Wars: Galaxies and more and of all these World of Warcraft has been probably one of the best experiences thus far.

Okay, holy shit that is just plain scary. Do you even know what sunlight is?

Questing system removes the XP grind

I hear a lot of people saying that there is a definite item grind, though, that your survivability is massively dependant on your loot?
Granted, the people I hear this from may not be the most objective observers (ie, GW players).

Curious about that.

I would play WoW, but unless it vacuums my house too, no game is worth 50 bucks plus 15 a month. Your own opinion may vary.

Regardless of what the real numbers are, it is the most successul MMORPG to date. I was there for the launch of UO, EQ, DAoC and other less popular MMOGs and the sheer number of servers available for WoW boggles the mind. I think it will be a while before another MMORPG takes the belt away from the champ. And that's what'll be needed before this games dies.. something better. Many of these MMORPG people need to be playing or at least subscribing to one MMORPG game to get their fix. I doubt any of the up and coming games out there like D&D online will have the same mass appeal that this warcraft/blizzard title offers.

I think this number is BS. Even if it were true - which I seriously doubt it is - I know for a fact that they're also losing a lot of customers. After 3 months (6 at the outside) there's absolutely no point in playing anymore. It's boring as stink. Not to mention the game consistently gets worse with each patch, the devs are inept and have zero concept of what class balance is about - partiuclarly as it applies to PvP. No real new content. And the list goes on. People will keep quitting this game in droves as well.

With this game doing so well, I'd imagine game companies everywhere are thinking about how to attempt a similar game. I hate MMOs so this is a bad thing.

I played wow from november til march and had 1 level 60 char and 5+ others in the mid levels.

as soon as I got to 60 the game went totally down the hill. boring as hell because it was only equipment that was important at that point. if that wasnt enough, I was on a pvp server and the classes were and still are totally fucked up. my friend and his wife still play, but stopped their original level 60 chars, because they are totally gimped in pvp. now they play a level 45+ rogue and priest and own even 2-3 level 60s at once ALL THE TIME. why? because they learned how fucked up the classes are and learned which are the most overpowered. indeed they have lots of fun now with their overpowered classes, but only because no one can hurt them unless they are totally outnumbered. for me that is a very sad fact.
I didnt have the nerve to start over AGAIN, so I stopped playing this pos.
no, Im sorry, the game itself is quite nice judged by the features etc. but blizzard is too incompetent to polish it, no wonder if they need 1-3 months for A FEW BUGFIXES.
So my opinion is blizzard SUCKS, not wow.

If you leveled a character up to 60, did a few raid instances like Stratholme, Scholomance, BRD, UBRS, Onyxia, and Molten Core

My issue with WoW became essentially that -- once you're L60 all of the instances become massive time sucks. It takes several hours to do any of the above (excepting, perhaps, Onyxia -- but merely getting the key for her takes several multi-hour expeditions in BRD), which is a drastic departure from the previous gameplay, even in instances (Maur could take several hours if you do the entire thing, but each "section" only takes 60-90 mins).

I simply don't have that kind of time... I have maybe two hours a night to play games. More than that and I'm eating into sleep.

So my account is cancelled now... I guess I could've restarted a new character and explored the world that way, but I really wasn't interested in doing that. Blizzard could've restructured the high end instances to be doable in shorter chunks, but it seems like they explicitly decided to do the exact opposite.

Kx, you are forgetting how much it cost to make the game, and how much it costs to maintain.

If you leveled a character up to 60, did a few raid instances like Stratholme, Scholomance, BRD, UBRS, Onyxia, and Molten Core... and then tried Battlegrounds (CTF or epic) and after all that think, "eh... WOW sucks" then I give you that, but if you're just posting "WOW sucks" without ever having playing it or playing it long then you don't have anything to say about the game.

Simply put you haven't played it long enough to enjoy it. Doesn't matter what game you play, the newb stuff always sucks! That's how most games are. All the end-game content is what matters most, and unfortunately that'll take anywhere from 2-6 months or more to get to. That's just the way things are.

Why would anyone subscribe to "radio". That's just nuts! Okay you listen to music. You listen to the chatter class. Great... Ummm you can get all this stuff for free off the Internet (legally and not so legally). Albeit you have to go looking for this stuff... but it's out there.

Satellite you can get in the car. Portable, walkman-like units are also available...

No commercials, tons of stations (catering to a number of formats)...if I listened to radio, I'd use it.

I'm also assuming it sounds better than FM...

For 15.00 a month, I want online WIRELESS gaming in all of North America. (sorry, kind of squirrely today)

I played like a few hours at a friends house and did not like it. Seemed like EQ +1, which is what a lot of the reviews said as well. All the innovation seems to have left Blizzard, but the spitshine team is still fully staffed. WC3 was exactly the same way.

[Edit] Kx, you are forgetting how much it cost to make the game, and how much it costs to maintain. [/edit]

Sigh. Anywho I just got Restricted Area, time to give that a whirl.
