Wow! 2M Playing WoW!

World of Warcraft Achieves New Milestone with Two Million Paying Subscribers is the press release announcing a new subscription threshold achieved by Blizzard's MMORPG, with further breakthroughs expected when the game launches in China:
World of Warcraft recently surpassed the two million mark for paying subscribers. Already the largest MMO in both North America and Europe, Blizzard expects to see even greater growth with the recent commercial launch in China on June 7, 2005. Anticipation for World of Warcraft was already at an all-time high in China, with peak concurrency during the open beta test topping 500,000 players, nearly equal to World of Warcraft's peak concurrency in all three current markets combined. Blizzard expects to see the new mark of two million subscribers shattered quickly with the arrival of players from China in the coming weeks.

Yep. PC games are dead. No way they'll ever survive. Nope. We'll all be playing on consoles soon, don't ya know. (indented/italic)

Not all PC gamers like MMOs. In fact, most probably do NOT.

look guys, its $15 bucks. its not like you're paying $100 every month - its fifteen fuckin' bucks. hold off on that gram of weed and you can afford it just fine. smoke less cigarettes. drink three cans less beer. stop buying red bull.
are all of you 14 years old and can't afford $15 every thirty days ? if you are, i can understand that, but if you're over 16 you have no reason to complain, being old enough to hold a job. these companies deserve a small fee/month for whatthey provide TWO MILLION users with.

so stop using monthly fees as a way of avoiding a very playable video game. and if you've already tried the game and got sick of it, well then shut up about it, and move on to something else.

That goes to all you freaks out there with female characters in ANY game.

You've obviously never seen a female ranger dance in GW

Nah, I play a female Elementalist in GW simply because their armor looks a shitload cooler than the male ones. And I'll play a female character in RPGs where there is different content for them (think KotOR, Jade Empire, etc).

Creston

Edit : Creston, I guess the monthely fees are a matter of opinion. I simply compare them to other things I do each month that entertain me. I pay for cable TV, Internet connection, I go to movies, rent movies, buy magazines, play paintball, take my boat out, camp, hike, etc. All these things have a monthly impact on my bank account.

That's fair enough, like I said, your own opinion will vary. Most of your examples though, you pay JUST the fees. someone tell me that with 30+ million dollars coming in per month, Blizzard couldn't afford to just let people DOWNLOAD the game for free.
And, in this case, it's costing them a sale, since I refuse to pay full price for a game and then to NOT be able to play it. Seriously, what ever happens when they say "oh, we changed our monthly fee to 20, or even 25 bucks"?
You can quit, surely. And lose all your time. Or you can suck it up and pay them whatever they want.

If a MMORPG GENUINELY used that 15 dollars a month to improve the content and have grade A customer support, I'd be willing to pay it. One dungeon every six months is not upgrading your content, that's throwing a morsel. And from what I read, customer service is conspicuously AWOL from Blizzard.
The joker from Blizzard who said "We're getting there, it's HARD to support that many people!" sounds like my fucking boss. Hire more support staff, shitface. You're making 30+ million dollars a month on this game, you can afford a hundred extra support nerds at 28K a year plus benefits.

This mmog is going to kill them all.

Tried the game, enjoyed the game, and upon seeing how one has to play and play and play to achieve the high levels, I then canceled my subscription before the first months payment was to be made.

now where's my mountain bike...............

Its stolen by the kid who play GTA: San Andres 6 hours a day. Even if you buy a new one you'll prolly die in a hail of bullets from the l33t dudez who play CS: Source 12 hours a day.

As you can see there is no escaping game related death. We're all doomed!!

"How do you know she was a "she"

Well, I go by the character choice unless they tell me otherwise. If you are a man playing a fucking women character, then expect to be refered to as a woman. That goes to all you freaks out there with female characters in ANY game.

Frankly, I've never understood it. I identify with the characters I play in video games, so I don't understand why any man would choose a female character/model, unless of course they had repressed feelings in need of release. To each his own though. Just don't get pissed if people refer to you as "she or "her" because of it.

Pssst, now would be a good time to use your leverage to demand a reduce in monthly charges, or at least some free play time.

In other words, do you know how much freaking money they're making off you guys? What is it, $13/mo? $15/mo? Times two million?

Well you guys are also forgetting just how big blizzard products are in China/Korea area's. I saw a short video that was a play done overthere based on Starcraft. I mean they litterally eat drink and shit Starcraft.

A friend of mine went over for a visit and came back with a Cheetos bag with Starcraft stuff on it. Just look at the numbers for the area based on other MMORPG's like Lineage and Lineage 2.

These are the folks that televise live Starcraft matches as well.

HAHA I LOVED those hoppers!
I remember they always attacked my friends instead of me and hopped around them, but I stood far away and picked em off with my gun. It looked sooo funny when they died while they hopped. Like they attempted to fly like superman but then noticed they couldnt actually fly and fell to the ground like a stone. Awesome!

You can definitely tell the MMORPG addicts from the FPS fans when you start fighting. An MMORPG nerd will stand still exchanging blows. The FPS player will hop around like a crack addict so you can't keep targeted.

In WOW once you "lock on" to a target you can hop around all you want... you still won't escape my 1650 point fireblast!

For example, I was talking to a woman last night who used the SL scripting language to start programming a school of fish she constructed so that they have basic AI capabilities such as flocking/schooling.

How do you know she was a "she"?

Was hoping for so much more from WoW, but alas, it turned out to be basically similar to ever other MMORPG out there.

Can't wait for the day when we get massively multiplayer Morrowind style RPG's with quests that actually matter...

I've played Ultima Online, Meridian 59, Asheron's Call 1 & 2, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, Magic: The Gathering online, Star Wars: Galaxies and more and of all these World of Warcraft has been probably one of the best experiences thus far.

Okay, holy shit that is just plain scary. Do you even know what sunlight is?

Yeah that does sound humorous. No that's like spread over a span of like 9 years. 1996 (Meridian 59) all the way up to today (WOW). I've got a lot of a MMORPG experience under my belt. I totally understand and in many ways agree with all of your posts about boredom setting in after 3-6 months, and I agree. Personally my passion is PVP, and more specifically Alterac Valley BG. I'd addicted to WOW's PVP system, albeit there's some classes that needed to be totally tweaked to truly balance in PVP but for the most I'm enjoying myself. I guess that's all anyone can expect from any MMORPG; free or otherwise.

I think this number is BS. Even if it were true - which I seriously doubt it is - I know for a fact that they're also losing a lot of customers. After 3 months (6 at the outside) there's absolutely no point in playing anymore.

Battlegrounds just came out last tuesday, which prompted a lot of people to reregesiter their accounts, as well as a lot of new people to start up accounts now that the big PvP thing is in there.

My issue with WoW became essentially that -- once you're L60 all of the instances become massive time sucks. It takes several hours to do any of the above (excepting, perhaps, Onyxia -- but merely getting the key for her takes several multi-hour expeditions in BRD), which is a drastic departure from the previous gameplay, even in instances (Maur could take several hours if you do the entire thing, but each "section" only takes 60-90 mins).

I simply don't have that kind of time... I have maybe two hours a night to play games. More than that and I'm eating into sleep.

So my account is cancelled now... I guess I could've restarted a new character and explored the world that way, but I really wasn't interested in doing that. Blizzard could've restructured the high end instances to be doable in shorter chunks, but it seems like they explicitly decided to do the exact opposite.

Compaired to Everquest that's nothing. Like getting flags from the diffrent planes. One of my main reasons why I don't play Everquest anymore. Whats really interesting is that until the last few expansions there was no Quest in EQ except for your epic weapons and class armor (which was painfully outdated by each expansion).

The biggest plus for me with WoW is that there really isn't a need for grinding unless for money. As you progress through the area's you get stronger and typically given a few other places to go that are your level to keep ya moving.

And if the made the high end instances doable in shorter chunks like you suggest then everyone would be bitching that they are too short and don't have enough content and everyone has already done them 50 times.

"I hear a lot of people saying that there is a definite item grind, though, that your survivability is massively dependant on your loot?
Granted, the people I hear this from may not be the most objective observers (ie, GW players)."

Remeber bunny hopping around in Counter Strike where you couldn't hit someone because your shots wouldn't land? Yeah? Well that's what good players do in WoW. You can have the most pimped out gear and I'll still bunny hop around instanting your ass to death. You can definitely tell the MMORPG addicts from the FPS fans when you start fighting. An MMORPG nerd will stand still exchanging blows. The FPS player will hop around like a crack addict so you can't keep targeted.

The gear only matters when you fight someone whose also a crack head (i.e. good at maneuvering). Then you're fucked.
