There's a Battlefield 2 Q&A on the Battlefield SinglePlayer Website (thanks Total Battlefield 2) talking with EA's Ben Smith about the upcoming military shooter sequel, keeping to their chosen focus of single-player action, though multiplayer is also touched upon: "This is correct, we will not be shipping with coop support in Battlefield 2. Since single-player in Battlefield 2 is focused on training players for full multiplayer matches (a gateway to multiplayer) we chose to focus on each of the modes separately and eliminate coop. There are no plans at this time to add coop support in a patch."

While I don’t know the exact meaning of the term 'coop'; I'll assume it means single player cooperative mode. To answer the question of how will the lack of this feature effect the potential players of BF2? It will have no effect.
