Out of the Blue

Got out to the theater as planned yesterday. MrsBlue had expressed interest in possibly seeing Episode III with me but I ended up flying solo. The good news about my early matinee is that there was only one other attendee in the theater, the bad news is there was a series of small but noticeable yellow flecks running up the screen about a quarter of the way over from the left edge that persisted from the very beginning of the film to the final frame. I think this is enough to make me seek another theater in the future... I was going to complain, but getting a free admission seemed an odd compensation for this, as it would force me to see another movie in a theater where they might harm the experience again.

Anyway, for all its evident flaws, I thought it was most excellent fun, and a fine culmination for the series, even going so far as to ease some of the disappointment of Episode One.

Then I guess it really isn't a MMORPG. Having a max of 8 people out and about will reduce your need to recruit -gasp- non BN people.

GW is exactly like that - once you leave town, your team is in it's own area. The cool part is you're never waiting on another group to pull up stakes so you can camp the same area they're camping. The downside is soloing is a bit lonely...

Once you hit the mid to high 50's (60 is the current level cap), you spend larger and larger amounts of time inside 'instanced' dungeons. These are little virtual play grounds in which only your party exists. A few take upwards of 4 hours to completely finish with a 5 man team! Teamwork is key and while you can go into these instances in pickup groups your rate of success drops like a rock when running with strangers.

So, having 10-15 people (and up to 40 in the end game instances) that you know and can count/trust on becomes very important. Out of our 40-45 active members I think we have maybe 5 Blue's News people max. So you can see why we needed to recruit outside of our BN friends.

Right now it's me, Malakai, complicity, Creston, and Bucky (any anyone else I'm forgetting - very sorry!), and we're always trying to drag more people in...there's at least one or two more that post here that are in the newbie area, and one to two more that plan to play shortly...

The MOST you can have in a group while playing GW is 8 (and for some of us, it's still 4). You can also bring in bots to fill in your group (say, you have 8 slots, but only 5 people playing), but they tend to die first.

Remember, you will have to recruit people from outside Blue's to join your guild

We do?

I have no idea how GW works but a little bit of insight into WoW:

I'm seriously considering picking up GW and keeping my WoW account. I've run through most of WoW's content at this point and done lots of loot grinding, and right now my only real pleasure is seeing my fellow guildies advance their characters. But after testing Battlegrounds and seeing that it does look like Blizzard is committed to adding content (however slowly) I'm staying with WoW for a good while longer. I can play, because my addiction is under control...or rather, I let it control me, and I'm OK with that

For those already on GW going for a Blue's guild, on WoW we found that it was the word "blue" that made it difficult to come up with a good name. Remember, you will have to recruit people from outside Blue's to join your guild, and you want them to be good, so don't pick a silly sounding name (Not a commentary on all the proposed names, some have been OK) just because it has "blue" in it. On WoW we picked "Azure Brigade" and have had no trouble picking up recruits we love that know nothing about Blue's News.

I bought GW too, I have only got a charcter to 9 and havent really tried the pvp yet, getting bored levelling.
I should get to join I have read this site since it was Quake 1 news

Im playing Wow right now 60 shammy main, was going to quit a few days ago, left my guild cause I thought it would give me the balls to quit, but alas last night I rejoined and and lost all my rolls on stuff yet again and then mindlessly pvped for honor points. I managed to silence everyone in ventrillo after a few glasses of wine spewing forth issues about politics and justice, hehe. When will I learn.

On the movies thing, yeah I should not have bought the concession junk. I used to always sneak food in but as an adult having a brown bag full of goodies and telling em to shove it when they ask to look inside and storm inside just does not seem right anymore.

Heck I even started drinking Pabst blue ribbon to save money on beer. Boxed wine sux though. VAC2 where are you???

So how does this guildwars compare to WoW. The only thing that sounds good about it so far is no monthly fee. I don't feel like spending any more subscription money on WoW any more. $70 bucks for the software (which was a gift actually) + 2 3 month subscriptions of 50 dollars is $170 for the game and 7 months of play.

Dan, that's the EXACT reason I went w/ GW over WOW. WOW looks badass, but even if I only played it for 6 months, that's $90 + the cost of the software to begin with. And I don't think it's worth that...

As you can download the GW client online, I wish they had some sort of 10 day trial for something like $4.99, but they don't. If they did, I know I could a lot more people hooked on it...

The best place for you to start would be here:

Anyone know how to turn off the automatic blocking of file transfers MSN Messenger 7 likes to do if they're .exe or .url files?
Yup, use Trillian.

Barring that, it's probably a registry edit like with the last few versions of Outlook.

Edit: Anyone know how to turn off the automatic blocking of file transfers MSN Messenger 7 likes to do if they're .exe or .url files? It's damn irritating and it's not Windows firewall (turned off) and I can't find it in the preferences.

I finally got around to seeing SW. I liked it, a lot better than the “first” 2. In fact, I hated the “first” two, this one was decent. George Lucas has NO fing clue how to write dialogue though, and even less of a clue how to write dialogue between lovers….man….that was down right pathetic.

I fear that this movie will be a death blow to Natalie Portman’s career…..that just made her look horrible in every aspect.

Because 99% of movies are still released on film, not digital.

Those may be shot on film, but they're certainly capable of releasing on both. It's not even much extra work -- you already have to do a super high definition scan of the 35 mm film (or whichever format you shot it in) for the DVD transfer -- one which is well above the resolution of any current or forseeable digital projector -- so unless you're not planning to release on DVD then you already have it in digital format. Certainly you may have to do some tweaking, but not a great deal.

Edit: Oh, and even at the relatively low 1280x720 resolution used in current digital theater projectors I still think it's superior to film. Unless you manage to catch the first 1-3 runs of the film. After that the film degrades so quickly compared to a digital projector (which has no noise, no blemishes, no color loss -- hell no color tint from the duplication process) that the digital theater will be vastly better for the majority of viewers. Once the 2Mpixel DLP chips are out then the resolution bit becomes much less of an issue; and ultimately we'll have 6-8Mpixel DLP systems that will blow away 35mm.

Yes nin you are correct. I'm not sure about how many server changes you are able to do, i might check that out.

I'm pretty sure I read it was 5...

I think we should petition whoever makes GW to allow international guilds to be created for situations just like this.

I agree 100%...and since you can only be a member of ONE guild, this kinda hoses us. I guess we could see if some people are willing to switch servers, but if they do, it's important they still have a decent response time, once they do (there's no point in switching to join the guild if in the process, it kills the experience).

Conclave of Blues
