It strikes me as a risky strategy to me. If I was an X Box fan I'd want a conclusive reason to upgrade, and Halo 3/GOW in spring '06 would be a great reason not to until then.
Ah, but they're in a 3-way race you see. And the general rumor is that the systems will be fairly pricey.
I'm sure they'd love to release the XBox at the same time as such flagship titles. But then they'd be pushing it close to PS3 and possibly Nintendo Revolution.
If the systems are going to be what people are saying ($400 or $450 USD), then you want to get them to buy yours first. Because after spending $400-$450 on your kids for one game system, chances are you can't or won't buy another $400-$450 system a few months later. I mean, without games we're talking close to $1k.
If their system is ready and it has some games, people will buy them; maybe not as many as if they'd have some real killer release games, but a bunch. And maybe 1/3 of their early sales will be locked into XBox360 instead of PS3 for at least 1-2 years.
