More on UT2007

The Unreal Tournament 2007 Preview on GameSpot has more on the next installment in Epic's shooter series:
The engine will have support for advanced special effects, including high dynamic range lighting and bump offset mapping--which is an advanced form of lighting that can make a completely flat surface appear to have protruding features, like a brick wall built from jagged, uneven stones--and an all-new physics engine powered by Ageia's Novodex technology. "We've never been able to do an avalanche in-game before," says Epic president Mike Capps, referring to both the simulated mountain avalanche in this year's GDC demo and to the sorts of effects you'll see in the game.

Capps explains that beyond the graphics, UT 2007 will also feature improved gameplay, based on feedback from the fans and from Epic's own goals. According to Capps, the studio is "trying to make sure that UT 2007 is a mix of UT 2004 and [the original Unreal Tournament from 1999]," while maintaining the series' focus on multiplayer competition. "We want to own the deathmatch space." Competitive play is a key element in the series' success, so Epic definitely plans to keep head-to-head competition around in the form of deathmatch, team deathmatch, and one-on-one duels, as well as capture the flag.

Depends how puritan your job is... There is a girl involved, yes, but... she has clothes on

Maybe I'll check it out from home...

Hmm, horse... dead... flogging...?

I bought all three of the UT games, and the only one with that magic gameplay feeling is the original. Are Epic really going to spend the next 10 years trying to recapture it, over and over again?

Why don't they come up with something NEW?

2007? Aren't we getting a little ahead of ourselves?

Means it's about a year and a half away, just guessing...EA likes to launch it's yearly titles in the fall, and sell them the entire next year (or the next fall, when it's replaced). So '07 would (in theory) ship in the fall of '06, and be available during most/all of '07...

I'm more interested in the modding stuff, particularly the new scripting system that's supposed to make a designer's job much easier.

It's obviously homosexual - it'll only connect to other UT2007 games. No heterosexual connections between UT2007 and Quake 4, for example. In this respect, most multiplayer games are indeed gay.

LMAO!

No, really.... this could get childish...;P

Not being a specialist in gay behavior, I'm curious.... what is gay about it? I'm more than happy to concede your skills in gay behavior and mannerisms would be far better than mine, so do tell....;P

Do you know Ben Dover, by chance?

If they keep Onslaught I'll have a meltdown--that mode was an utter spam-fest in anything less than full-blown clan matches.

Here's to hoping the keep the old school DM, I still prefer it over games like Battlefield and the like. Now if they'll settle on a few game modes instead of stuffing in so many it makes community fragmentation automatic.

DM will never be the same it was when I was in college and able to drag my computer across campus to a lounge with all my buddies and frag them face to face.

I think a lot of the "it will never be like XXXX game" has a lot more to do with who and where you played, not so much in the game it is and such.

Halo2 to me is a GREAT game (minus a few nagging issues) but I have SUCH a horrible time playing it when I can't hook up with the xbl buddies I have. Quality of WHERE you play and WHO you play with is a big deal to me.

I think this game, and any other game will be the best it can be when you are in a good place with it.

I'm glad they still have the goal to make Unreal a DM game primarily. That makes me very happy, and I'm sure by them sticking to their roots it's going to pay off. Think about it, many gamers say they are sick of plain old vanilla DM that's why all these games are trying different approaches to multiplayer (ie Brothers In Arms). Maybe by the time UT2007 rolls out DM will take a back seat in most games so it'll be "Fresh" again for Unreal? I highly doubt it but I long to have the same fun I had with UT99 again. That's what I crave the most. Kind of like an addict chasing his first "high"!!!

"trying to make sure that UT 2007 is a mix of UT 2004 and [the original Unreal Tournament from 1999],"

I recommend they focus on the latter, because even though UT2004 was an improvement over UT2003, it still doesn't really compare in the gameplay department to the original.
