CS: Source Maps Next Week

This Steam Update (thanks Richard) has word that Valve plans on releasing de_port and de_inferno next week along with an updated version of the current CT model. They also have a new shot from the inferno map online, as well as an outline of their E3 plans: "Half-Life 2 Xbox will be shown in the Xbox area of Microsoft’s booth. Meanwhile Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, which is the new, single-player level created to introduce High-Dynamic Range (HDR) lighting to the Source engine, is slated to appear in the Games for Windows area at the show."

Having multiple appearances for each team is confusing for new players. It's easier to have each team look uniform, especially if FF is on.

Wowow then maybe they should spend 5 seconds checking out the model selection screen and realize all the guys in the gray uniforms wearing kevlar are the CTs?

Call of Duty has that ability. And I used to like Call of Duty because the Sniper was so powerful, but that was in much more open space areas than Counter-Strike & it made sense to me. What doesn't make sense to me anymore is that some guy with a submachine gun can kill me in Call of Duty across the map because the Sniper Rifles in that game are so nerfed there's no reason for them anymore. Which is why I sold the game on Ebay.

Zeph, I get the feeling you are not fond of the AWM
Its part of the game and I dont really mind it, the one thing I hate is when one team is owning and the entire team has them. What would be real cool is if there was a built in limitation to weapons in the game. So that say only one person on each team can buy one then no else can.

That's the exact reason that they are doing it the way it is now.

Anyway if you add just a little variation it might the game to feel more realistic, but probably not very much. I'd rather see a new machine gun enter the game, or a molatov cocktail selection for terrorists.

The #1 complaint for me about the game is the AWP & it always has been. Once that gun is employed in a standing position it should be pratically useless. I mean, sure, if you are standing completely still and shooting at a target then you might hit it. But if someone is running at you with an AK47 screaming something about Allah and popping off short bursts at you, then you are going to die unless you squat down or just pull out a pistol and hope for the best.

In almost every situation the AWP would be useless, with the sole exception of camping with a visibility over the longest distances of a map. The rest of the time, it would be a highly inaccurate suicide weapon. A sniper rifle is made for distance. It's power knocks people off their feet when they fire it while standing.

This is also not about my inability to use it. Anyone can use it. That's not the point. The gun ruins the fun. Anyone can use this coward's weapon of 1shot, 1kill. A real man isn't afraid of combat. Even the hated auto-snipers allow for people to at least feel like they have a chance to shoot back; although I prefer the version of the weapon when no one knew how to use it.

Anyway, if you want to get past the AWP, get extremely angry, call the bastard a coward, and use full unbridled aggression with a submachine gun & run at him at angles. Then, when you kill him, spray his corpse with some vulgar spraypaint, and keep shooting his dead body. Use the AWP on his face and ass and make hamburger out of him. Just keep yourself pumped up. If he still doesn't get it, then buy an AWP yourself & blow the asshole away with his own weapon, and tell him that anyone can use the gun and it's a child's weapon. The pathetic moron will probably still miss the point and probably buys the deagle as well, but these people are dense and its hard to get through to them. Plus they are truly cowards in real life, so its hard to change their minds about themselves. But if you're ever successful then you've made someone overcome their fears and made the world a better place with one less little faggot bitch behind an AWP, and that's a good thing.

Even in classic CS, I'd run with minmodels. Having two distinct shapes, one for each team and distinct, is definitely a tactical advantage. Personally, if they added a few minor variations, things like a stitched-on name, a few different faces/skin tones, and helmet art, all without changing the overall appearance/size/shape of the model, I'd be very happy. Glad to see inferno getting the proper Source treatment. I always liked it as a CS map, and while the fanmade conversions have been decent, I'm sure the Valve team will make it even better.

HL2:LC should be interesting as an 'omg pretty' demonstration, but I'm wondering how far ahead the next-gen consoles are going to be when compared to the current top-range PC graphics, and what that'll do to steal their thunder. Because it's the end of the current generation, PC graphics are so far ahead, but with the brand-new technology going into these beasts, I'm afraid it could strike a blow to PC gamers, although the effects of that would be uncertain. It may push more developers to consoles, while at the same time sparking the indie revolution that's been brewing for a long time. Or it could be a minor dip in a chart for someone in Accounting that'll get smoothed over and ignored. Time will tell.

It should be like Hostile Intent: models should be assigned uniform per team, but each map should have different models.

As for them showing very little at E3 - maybe they have a surprise up their sleeves, probably not.

Valve wouldn't dare show something unless it is coming out between this E3 and next E3. They've learned their lesson, then screwed up and relearned it.

I thought CS started looking crappy when people got model choices. CTs especially should be uniform, and Ts just look organized and professional when they match.

I'm with Zeph - who cares? At the very most models should vary with maps, but teams should be identical.

It provides at the very least some variation, it wouldn't have to be much, just a couple of different models around a similar theme - in fact, they could just change the heads, have a range of 2 or 3, they've already gone through 2! It just gives the models a bit more personality, rather than a team of clones.

WHY NOT JUST ADD NEW ONES!

What would be the point? It would be like having a black desert eagle & a silver desert eagle.

Unless they actually do something different, there's no point to it.

Lost Coast is probably easier to make a demonstration out of, since it has very specific features they would want to show off. Aftermath, on the other hand, is more Half-Life 2. We've already seen Half-Life 2's major features, so the only thing left to show for Aftermath is spoilers.

So they are going to E3 with a console port and an expansion level for their PC Game. Sheesh, talk about low expectations. How about some Team Fortress 2?
