Alan Wake Revealed

Remedy Entertainment announces that the Alan Wake Website has a video and a pair of screenshots from their upcoming PC/console game, along with the apparent announcement of the project's heretofore unannounced title. The in-game video is available there as a BitTorrent download, which has now been mirrored on 3D Gamers, FileFront, FileShack (registration required), and Worthplaying. More details on the game are expected to be revealed at the coming E3 Expo.

The argument that PC will be an afterthought usually holds water with most development houses, e.g. those morons who made Project Snowblind (post-processing crashes the game on any computer, thanks for not patching it up, guys! Enjoy your fucking return.)

But I don't think it applies to Remedy. They made Max Payne 1 and 2, both of which were released on consoles as well as on the PC, but they were PC games first, console games second - and they played great on both systems. I have a feeling that they won't be skimping with Alan Wake, either.

dual development for pc/console arguments aside, I think it looks pretty interesting from what (little) we see of it.

this game looks amazing.

Can't wait to play finally again a decent game with a real story. I'm sick of all those no-brain shooters. Bring it on Remedy!

Preorder where?

Bloom=Consoles first? WoW, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Painkiller, and um, Age of Empires III to name afew PC only, and WoW had it way back in beta when it wasn't even really popular at all at the time. I'd say it was first on PC and will always be. Just sucks console owners can't turn it off

You're thinking too hard, I'm simply pointing out that console games go nuts with bloom for no good reason other than to cover up system limitations and make it look hip. With the exception of MMO's(which have the same overall graphics limitations due to scale), no one designing a game for a PC first shows it off using bloom since the effect would cover up the more refined graphics a PC is capable of(and usually one of the big selling points of a PC game).

Ahhh... of course, the old vaseline-on-the-lens trick......

I have no idea, myself. I guess it may be down to an assumption that hardware specifities are being used for the effect, i.e. as in a console, and that, um, Pc design allows for more precise blloming effects. Or something.

Wait, since when did light bloom automatically determine that a game was designed for consoles?

Ach, hell, I dunno.

(I think bloom is done on consoles by directly manipulating one of the gfx buffers, downsizing and doing some brightness/contrast adjustment, and then copying the bloomed buffer onto the top of the z-buffer. I may be talking absolute bollocks, though - can't say I remember much about that area offhand... )

Wait, since when did light bloom automatically determine that a game was designed for consoles? I think i missed that lecture in IgnoranceVille. Light bloom has been used in PC games for over 2 years now, Guild Wars is an example off the top of my head. People have even figured out how to mod bloom effects into stock UT2004.

That aside, the game looks pretty hot from a visual perspective. Not the characer shot necessarily, but the landscape one looks like solid level design and good artwork. Wonder if their vegetation was done in a generator or by hand.

The problem is that most of the cosole -> PC ports carry games ment for hardware specs that are ridiculous. As you know, this-gen consoles don't have enough video and system memory and that reflects in the graphics and gameplay aspect. I'm tired to see DX8.1 effects, small maps and loading times.
If we're talking about a next-gen console port then I'm sure the experience will be more positive as I think it'll exploit some of the best features today's PC hardware has to offer.

While PC might be an afterthought, I don't think bloom is a give away considering HL2 can do it on my gf4200.

Eh. The Max Payne games were PC/console games, though they were PC first. Personally, I'm just glad to see that "PC" up there, and I won't hold any grudges just because they're releasing it for consoles, as well. There are good console games that make good PC games; I played GTA3 and GTA:VC and I can't wait for GTA:SA.

All in all, I've only seen two screenshots and a video, and already I'm 99% sure I'll be buying it the day it's released.

I think you mean console game with a PC afterthought.
Probably; the use of Bloom in the screenshots basically gives it away.
