Out of the Blue

Yesterday's trip to introduce Gunnar to his Uncle Sparky went great, everybody got along famously, and by the end 14-year-old Sparky was horsing around with the youngsters like he was a puppy himself. Gunnar did leave a submarine-sized turd in the bedroom, but it cleaned up pretty readily, and he was forgiven for his toilet training shortcomings. This morning, however, Hudson the wonder dog resumed her recent spate of picking on the other dogs in her trail-running pack, focusing on large males and unfamiliar faces, as she seems quite determined to exert her dominance over the group as alpha dog... if this continues as it is, I may actually have to stop taking her out to run with this crowd, which would be a shame.

Have we had enough Star Trek beatings? Good, because I want to ask ya'll something:

I have a wireless network at home (which is reasonably secured with passwords, WEP, etc.) and this weekend, just out of curiosity, I looked to see if there were any other wi-fi stuff going on in my neighborhood. Sure enough, there were 5 other networks my laptop could pick up, 3 of which were absolutley unprotected - - I easily could access them and surf on someone else's dime.

Being the good neighbor that I am, I want to warn these idiots that their networks are unsecure. Without turning into a criminal ha><or myself, is there a way to do this?

The worst part of the entire thing is that Z has subtly lured me into watching BS:G.

Of course, watching paint dry would be better than studying for this &^%#@^$%#$#$ Anatomy and Physiology final that I have at 7:30 AM tomorrow.

(Sekret message to Z: stupid b**** didn't have the exams graded from last week. Glad I called her versus driving to Kennesaw to review the exam...)

Well, I kinda have to wonder how you couldn't know this if you watch BS:G -- at the end of the last episode they had a spot saying "New episodes coming in July". I TiVo everything and saw it! (Just finished watching the episode yesterday actually).

So, how'd everyone like last night's Family Guy return episode?

Personally I thought it was great! I was afraid they were going to mess with the show before it came back, either toning it down too much or making it like SouthPath (which is only funny because of the hard-core scenes).

Glad to see it back. I especially like the little shot towards Fox at the beginning listing all of their psuedo-recently cancelled shows.

SG-1 has been stale for a couple seasons now. They jumped the shark with Daniel dying and coming back. It really, really needs to go away now.

Which time is that? Hasn't he "died" like 5 or 6 times on the show? I mean they were just joking about it a few episodes ago, Jack saying that every friggin time they think Daniel's dead he just shows up and makes a joke.

I know what you meant (Ascended Daniel). I started losing interest a little before then though.

Atlantis will probably last around 3 or 4 seasons

Dunno. Right now they're relying on people to watch SG-1, then Atlantis, then BS:G... as long as people do they'll keep it. I've stopped watching it though -- as painful as SG-1 was to watch, Atlantis was only moreso.

I miss Showtime's SciFi shows

Yeah. When they sold SG-1 to SciFi I dumped my subscription. They had some good stuff for awhile though.

And I agree that SciFi appears to mostly produce drek. They've occasionally done well (BS:G for instance, the Dune mini-series), but most of it is B-grade crap at best.

Galactica was very nice while it lasted. Too bad its over now. Hopefully they decide to make a 2nd season, because the end was very unsatisfying.

But I think it was never meant to be a big series with multiple seasons. Just like Band of Brothers.

Enterprise was (still is) a very good Star Trek series (IMO THE best) and I am very sad that it stops now. They should filmed at least another season to complete the plot.
FINALLY episodes are linked together, they even made a whole big story for season 3, which was pretty neat.

Yeh. I like how we're seeing Earth working with the other races and starting to form a little coalition (beginnings of the Federation). I loved it the 2 or 3 parter involving Andoria; finally getting to see their planet and what-not. Then the ending where they've essentially made some major allies.

Seriously, I'd have no problem if the show stayed on the air and started following this trend. They got rid of the temporal cold wars, got passed the whole Xindi plot, and are moving to more "Trek-like" stories. Culture-clashing, diplomacy, and the occasional threat to peace.

ALL of them! Only FarScape, Andromeda, Lexx, etc is worse than SG1.

As for Farscape, I think the first season rocked. The second one was alright but it got really bad really fast. I loved how in the beginning Crichton was acting like a normal guy facing all of this crazy sh!t and reacting like I would. Then he became this uber-Captain guy with the knowledge of the universe.

But I can't argue that Andromeda and Lexx are probably the worst shows out there.

FINALLY episodes are linked together, they even made a whole big story for season 3, which was pretty neat. That alone would be good enough, but it also surpasses anything (except maybe Galactica) out there quality wise (acting, effects, scripts). Also the actors are not some dumb idiots now anymore who just do what they are told to and have no deep personality at all. Enterprise finally managed to give each actor his own unique personality, which evolves every episode and makes you want to know how it continues next episode, Ive never watched a SciFi Series for the characters before!
As every series it also had its bad episodes. The one with the green slave females for example. The last 2 sucked too, seems to me as if they wanted to try something completely different and see if people like it more. if they just had choosen to show klingons do all that in the normal universe, it wouldnt have seemed that extremely pathetic. I heard the last 3 episodes are going to be as pathetic last-minute-crap.

SG1 good? lol? are you guys serious? sg1 sucked from the very beginning and only very few episodes were worth watching. The acting was and still is horrible as if the actors were just picked up from the street. Even Mr. Macgyver acts like a 6 year old child, not to mention all the others. ALL of them! Only FarScape, Andromeda, Lexx, etc is worse than SG1.

Atlantis on the other hand is an awesome and completely different series. I hope it stays for a long time. The story alone is very interesting and makes you forget/ignore a few flaws here and there.

Galactica was very nice while it lasted. Too bad its over now. Hopefully they decide to make a 2nd season, because the end was very unsatisfying.

Ah, got it to work. Thanks.

Part of my problem is on my end. At work our Internet proxy doesn't allow us to refresh whenever we want. Heck, sometimes it even rolls back, so refreshing Slashdot will show me yesterday's headlines. So it takes several "F5" presses before I can see new content.

I like Voyager and I like Enterprise. Most criticism of Enterprise I have seen was based on nothing

Actually, I think if someone doesn't like the show, it doesn't matter what he/she bases it on. The fact is, they DON'T like it.
And since viewer ratings for Enterprise were plain awful, I think there were a lot of people who just didn't like it.

My biggest beef with Enterprise was the entire idea of it being a prequel in the first place. We've just watched 24 seasons of Star Trek in which NO MENTION is ever made of Captain Archer and staff, and 21 seasons in which everyone relates to James T Kirk as being the pioneer of the federation, the hero of the galaxy etc.
And then all of a sudden, we create a series with Cpt Archer and Co who save the universe 837000 times. And yet nobody knows about them.
Ehh, okay.
And the whole "watch them rub gel into each other eight times per season" got really old after the first time. If I really want to watch some skinny chick having crap rubbed on her, I'll Google it.

For 21 years, they built the continuity of the Star Trek universe, making sweeping changes to the relations between the races (the Federation/Klingon/Romulan alliance, for example), setting up the stage for a grand epic show, and then they shove it all under the rug, and we go to the delta quadrant and the Pre-Federation. WHAT THE FUCK??

Trek has always suffered from the "bad few seasons" syndrome. Even TNG's first and second season weren't that great. It just makes you wonder why it always seems to take Trek's writers three seasons to finally come up with some good plotlines.
DS9 was bloody AWFUL in its first two years, but after season three, it became by far the best Trek series.
Voyager was "jab-pencil-in-eyeball" kind of bad in the first seasons, but the last couple of seasons were pretty good. Same for TNG.
So why couldn't Enterprise recover? Well, maybe because the premise of the show really wasn't all that interesting to begin with. (and maybe because several of the 'actors' in the group were Harry Kim / Neelix / Wesley Crusher combined.)

They need some new writers, and they need them bad. They also need to do something more involved than Voyager or Enterprise. We have this whole universe to play with, so PLAY with it. We had a brilliant setup after DS9, only to have nothing done with it for a full decade.

Have more far reaching consequences. Stop resetting the clock after every episode. Instead of proclaiming "Nobody in the Galaxy can go faster than Warp Speed 5", and just leaving it like that, give us a few episodes where we see what that decision means for the galaxy, woven into the normal storyline where characters yap against each other.
The reruns are still getting good enough ratings, so there's definitely a demand for more Trek. Resting the show for half a decade really isn't going to bring back more viewers, if it ever comes back.
