Prey Announced

Following-up on the revelation that Prey is once again in development, 2K Games sends along the official (re) announcement of the game, along with an image of an upcoming PC Gamer cover that is an actual Prey screenshot. Here's the announcement:
New York, NY – April 26, 2005 – 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), and 3D Realms today announced Prey, a revolutionary first person shooter for PC and a next-generation console system in development at Human Head Studios, under the direct supervision of 3D Realms.

“The initial concept for Prey had been incubating for a while, waiting for the right opportunity to come along,” said George Broussard, President of 3D Realms. "We jumped at the chance to create this game with a talented developer like Human Head Studios and next-generation technology like the Doom 3 engine."

Scott Miller, CEO of 3D Realms, added, "Prey is special for many reasons, including several new and original gameplay features and a tightly integrated story that packs an emotional punch, unlike other first person shooters."

“Our collaboration with 3D Realms has been enormously rewarding,” added Timothy Gerritsen, CEO of Human Head Studios. “With their help, Prey is sure to breathe new life into the first person shooter genre with a compelling story, innovative gameplay mechanics and dazzling imagery, which is powered by our significantly enhanced version of id Software's original Doom 3 engine.”

Prey will be exclusively showcased at this year’s E3 Expo by ATI in a movie theater-style exhibition. For the world exclusive first details on the game, look for PC Gamer’s June issue featuring Prey as its cover story, arriving on newsstands in early May. Prey is currently scheduled for a 2006 release.

This is what I mean by frustrating reading these forums. I miss the Chatbear forums, where the idiot amount was a lot lower, and people weren't complete jackasses...

I have yet to see a forum where at least 75% of the posts were useless whining or incessant flaming. At least there's some maturity here. (Well, there's me, anyway...)

The cynical agreeable then sarcastically surprised is so yesterday that it makes you look like an old man trying to be cool and coming off like someone saying that a girl is "fly" or "phat", but most likely you'd try to say she was 71y or p4@7. You're completely out of step spooge.

This is further explained by your whiny desire to return to the carebear forums.

You sir are a complete lack of what is cool.

Could someone point out the so-called improvements made to the Doom3 engine?
The levels are lighter: is already done by the community using shaders.
Portals: Has been done since Quake3, and probably before that.

I don't think anyone here said that the engine would be improved, I believe it was stated that the engine was 'heavily modified'.
That doesn't necessarily mean improved. *shrug*
Apparently the Terribly Introspective Native American Hero has forms of psychic powers and such, which weren't standard in Doom3, so it's an engine modification. Similarly for that walk on walls stuff, they'd have had to modify the engine for that. It might be that that's all they did, and PC Gamer called it "Heavily Modified".

As for the portals, I don't think the Quake 3 portals allowed you to see through, did they? Can't quite remember, I was always firmly in the UT camp.

The models look far worse than those in Doom3. It's like they didn't even bother to make hi-res models, and use the old technique of painting the lo-res models.

?
They looked pretty decent to me. In fact, I prefer them over Doom 3's attempt to be "scary".

What the hell is George Broussard doing with that dead game Prey? Isn't he supposed to be working on Duke Nukem Forever? Why does George Broussard have to keep beating a dead horse? Will someone PLEASE shoot this man out of his misery?!

Of course.. Prey will be finished off and published before DNF ever sees the day of light again. 3D Realms is a pain in the gamers back side.

Next they will work on a sequel to "Shadow Warrior" using th new Prey engine... But first DNF will switch to the new Prey engine first, and will be released before DNF.

I for one get both PC Gamer and Computer Games Mag. PC Gamer has a tendency to be way too childish, and CG Magazine tends to get too wrapped up in the "Man we are waaaayy different. We're so mature " high horse. The Stevie Case debacle is still one reason I can't take PC Gamer too seriously. CG's over philosophizing can be irritating, too. Taken together I guess I can say they're all right.

Is it Tommy Hawk or Talon Brave?

The main character is named Tommy. No word on if they kept the "Hawk" part, but it is noted that the game has a serious tone. Too serious to have a joke name, I hope.

Talon is now the name of Tommy's spirit guide.

Since it was Ageia that mentioned 3DR had licensed their NovodeX technology and not 3DR themselves, it's safe to assume that the engine in question was Unreal Engine 3. No other version of Unreal uses NovodeX. Still, Ageia said nothing about which game would use it, so saying they licensed UE3 for DNF is only speculation.

And those engine licenses are generally given out on a per-game basis. A licensee may enter into a special agreement to use the technology for multiple titles, but that's not very common, and is certainly more expensive.

Is it Tommy Hawk or Talon Brave?

Both are awful ideas. I can't fathom why 3DR would have stuck with this. Prey had a great name and great technological ideas, but an absurdly bad and annoying theme/plot.

I'll pick this magazine up, check it out.

HAHAHAHAHA, more Stevie bashing, always amusing. Normally I don't think people deserve it, but she flaunted herself as a sex object entirely too much when all she had was a boyfriend that could fund massive surgery.

The "walk on walls" thing seems at least innovative if nothing else

Uh no, AvP?

Oh, I never played that. Well, so much for innovation. I'm sure it will try again in a dozen years or so

Why on earth would a developer license TWO current gen engines?

Using the same engine for 2 games is no cheaper, the license they pay for is only for one game.

I don't think that's true. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's not. I think Raven paid id a straight lump sum for the quake 2 / 3 engine, and they used the absolute crap out of that engine. (784187 games at last count?)

It was always my understanding that the Unreal-ppl would make improvements of their engine available to licensees. That is, people dealing with them at some point would have to say, 'nonono, don't send us more code, we need to feature-freeze, and just get our game out the door'. Can you really see 3DRealms doing that?

Hehe, exactly. But that actually confirms my belief that you license an engine and can then make 75 billion games with it, if you so choose.
(and actually, if it was per game licensing, why wouldn't you just always upgrade whenever something new was available?)

Gary Whitta (the magazine guy) is working on Prey? Where'd you see that?

It's in the PC Gamer article. He's a scriptwriter for the game.

hat's right, goddamnit! I get a substantial percentage of my value from life in posting flames to various game-related websites. The current breakdown is:

20% - Value from flames on Blue's
60% - Value from flames on the World of Warcraft Forums
10% - Value from good food (often consumed while ranting)
10% - Value from pornography and related private exercise

When WoW makes the PvP "Dishonor" system work my WoW related flaming will go down to 20%, giving my only 80% of the value from life that I have as of this moment.

You'll be needing at least 20% more porn, then.........
