Gold - Guild Wars

IGN is reporting that Guild Wars is gold (thanks Guild Wars Slovenija), and ArenaNet's MMORPG will ship on April 28, the date listed on the Guild Wars Website. Here's part of how the game is described in their Game Information Synopsis:
Guild Wars takes the best elements of today's massively multiplayer online games and combines them with a new mission-based design that eliminates some of the more tedious aspects of those games. You can meet new friends in towns or outposts, form a party, and then go tackle a quest together. Your party always has its own unique copy of the quest map, so camping, kill-stealing, and long lines to complete quests are all things of the past. Within a Guild Wars quest you have unprecedented freedom and power to manipulate the world around you; with the dynamic quest system, your accomplishments have a unique influence on your future.

They had separate battle.net servers for asia, yet those freaks still ruined Diablo 2 by plaguing the American servers. Diablo 2 was instanced too, but there were plenty of ebay sales for that game. Anyway I was just pointing out what kind of company you are supporting by purchasing this game.
True, a lot of the Koreans ruined the Battle.net USWest/USEast experience, but that problem has been dealt with in Guild Wars. See, the American/Australian/Asian (Think Singapore)/European client is a different one than the one Koreans and specifically Koreans use. Basically, anyone with the former client can connect to either America or Europe if they want to, but anyone playing on the Korean client, which is the only version sold in Korea by NCSoft, can't connect to the American or European servers. They're not given a choice in the matter, so we won't have a problem with any influx of Koreans on the server. But if you have a friend in Korea who wants to play with you, you can join him on the International server. This is no big deal for Americans stationed in South Korea, though - they can just buy the American version from America or Europe and play it. It isn't based on IPs.

Don't get me wrong, I loathe NCSoft, particularly NCSoft Austin for their lackluster support of Lineage II, but ArenaNet uses its own support staff, so nobody has to deal with NCSoft.

I wouldn't call it an MMORPG either. I know that ArenaNet doesn't - they call it a CORPG (Cooperative online RPG). It's mainly the fault of magazines and the gaming press that refer to it as an MMORPG because they don't want to call it a 'hybrid' or something else.

Calling Guild Wars an MMORPG is misleading and false. Sure, thousands of people can log on at the same time and... um... stand around in town waiting for a group before they run off to play an instance. Played the Beta. This is a glorified 3d Diablo 2 with no single player and better PvP. But it definately AINT an mmorpg. Gotta have more than... i dont know... 1000 or 2000 people able to combat in same zone to be a MMO.

Wish they would quit calling it an MMO.

Guild Wars is published by the same company, NCSoft. This game is going to be ruined by koreans.[q
It's published by the same company but Koreans and Europeans play on separate servers though they can play with Americans on the International district. English speaking Europeans should play on the American server, or they'll have to deal with the French %). Koreans use a different client from Americans and Europeans, so they can only play on the Korean server.

Besides, the game is completely instanced, so there will be no problems with botters or gold farmers. I don't see any problem with Koreans in GW.

but i do have to give these guys props for taking a big chunk out of the MMO monthly fee monkey....

i would go as far as saying that there will be many more MMO games without monthly fees - and someday they will go away for good OR FINALLY BE FUCKING JUSTIFIED BY SOME GODDAMN CONTENT UPDATES

I was less than impressed. I beta tested... and the lack of content was what had me puzzled. To put it in a nutshell... they made a better looking Diablo/Dungeon Siege that is online only.

I dunno, I got my money set on Tactica Online right now. This just seems to be a Diablo clone with more online content.

but I'm kinda burnt out on games that require huge time investments.

Last guy was kinda right; another goal of GW is to end level treadmilling. I don't know... it's hard to explain what they are doing with this game. Trying to take out what they see as the "boring" aspects of MMORPGS but still keep game content reasonable.
