Serious Sam II Announced

2K Games officially announces Serious Sam II, the sequel to Croteam's fast-and-furious first-person shooter, set for release on the PC and Xbox this fall:
New York, NY – April 20, 2005 – 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), today announced Serious Sam II, the much-anticipated return of Sam “Serious” Stone to PC and the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft.

“Gamers have been anxiously anticipating a full sequel ever since Serious Sam: The Second Encounter was released back in 2002,” said Christoph Hartmann, Senior Vice President of Publishing for 2K Games. “The frantic action and lighthearted humor of Serious Sam really struck a chord with gamers worldwide, and with a brand new engine and greatly expanded gameplay, we think fans will agree that the return of Sam has been well worth the wait.”

“Our second generation Serious Engine allows us to create characters with over 100 times more detail than the last game,” added Roman Ribaric, CEO of Croteam Ltd, developers of Serious Sam II. “This has allowed us to create huge, lush environments and even crazier enemies than before, without having to scale back the gameplay in any way. Gamers can rest assured that with the capabilities of our new engine, we’re not only going to match the record we set with the first Serious Sam for the most enemies on screen at one time, we’re going to surpass it.”

Serious Sam II will be released for PC and Xbox in fall 2005, and will be showcased at 2K Games’ booth at this year’s E3 Expo. Look for the first details on the game in the June issue of Computer Games Magazine, featuring Serious Sam II as the cover story, on newsstands in early May.

There was Serious Sam: The First Encounter and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. TSE was more of a standalone expansion pack than anything. Just added new levels, monsters, powerups and weapons along with a few engine tweaks and upgrades. Sort of like Doom to Doom II.

Serious Sam 2 is a full blown sequel.

Replying to myself here - am I thinking of the Second Edition or something? Would it be easier if I just looked it up on Google rather than discussing it with myself here?

Incidentally, a) HL2 is an FPS, and a great one. b) Having zoomed through Doom 3 once (on hard) I can safely say that there is no point at which it's impossible to avoid being hit. Unless that occurs in one of the easier difficulty levels, which I doubt.

Does no one remember the ACTUAL Serious Sam 2? On PC? About 2-3 years ago?

Really?

"Hl2 and D3 were just basic shooters.... "

Seriously, with perhaps the exception of Deus Ex, I still haven't seen a game with the interactivity of Duke3D...and that was a mid nineties game.

Shadow Warrior? Blood?

seriously overflow, HL2 is not an RPG.
I think even HL could count slightly more as an RPG, cause you actually interact with one character.
At the very end of HL1 you can go with that guy or go through teleport to unwinnable battle...
Thats one more choice in the 'role' category than HL2 had.

Btw, bravo to Overflow for coming up with the most extremely absurd comparison ever witnessed on Bluesnews. Sir, we salute you.

Damn! I was going to try for that honor by saying 'Far Cry' was the same as 'Barbie's Pet Rescue'. Or how about this one: 'Yahoo Texas Hold'em' and 'Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War' are practically the same game!

"The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality."

Thank you. It was difficult, but I figured that if I reached back into the past far enough I could really bring my absurdity to maximum oscillatude.

Alright, I'll admit that calling HL2 a myst clone was reaching a bit. But... I still think that HL2 is more of a RPG than a FPS. You do talk to the AI's in the game, at least the writers seemed to want you to. I apoligize to all of those people who seemed upset by my comparisons.

I still think that Serious Sam will ROCK!

Creston, obviosuly you were too sober while playing the game. Didn't you read the game requirements:

Pentium III or better
directX 8.0 or better required
64Mb graphics card recommended for best perfrmance
256Megs RAM
A LAN hook up to play Co-op cause that's where it's at.
Alcoholic beverages to make the game more silly and fun than it already is.

You don't follow the instructions and you see the performance issues you described. I'm sure it's in the FAQ at Croteam's site.

I agree that Serious Sam doesn't need a storyline, or cutscenes, but they REALLY need to pace the game better than they did with TSE.

I mean, after the first five levels, you had all the weapons, you had seen all the monsters, and then you just got ten more levels of the same crap. That didn't hold my interest all that much.
It'd be nice if every level, you'd see a new monster, and every other level, you'd get a new weapon. That way it would at least stay a little fresh.

I'm really looking forwards to SS2, especially if some of the huge enemies have special tactics that are required to take them down.

Ooo oooo!! Look at Mr. Big Words there wanting "tact-icks" in his Serious Sam shooters. Listen buddy, you will get copious ammounts of ammo. You then pick up a weapon, preferably one the size of telephone pole to dispense your copious amounts of ammo into screaming zombie hordes which number in the hundreds, mutated dogs, and perhaps if we're lucky, a 100 foot tall rendition of either William Shatner or the corpse of Johnny Carson.

That's all Serious Sam is, that's all it EVER NEEDS TO BE!! Tactics? We don't need no stinkin' tactics!! If you don't enjoy Serious Sam in co-op mode then unplug your computer and go get a degree in philosophy or some other nancy boy past time.

Actually go replay Doom 3 again, shortly after all hell breaks loose there is a door that you go to walk through and a Imp hits you, there is no way to avoid it or kill it before it does. And throughout the game there are monster closets that open and you are immediatly hit.

I don't think any of the imps were automatically scripted to hit you, you just have to be fast enough to catch them with the shotgun as they leap.

I'm really looking forwards to SS2, especially if some of the huge enemies have special tactics that are required to take them down.

HL and HL2 are closer to Myst or Fallout than Doom or Unreal.

This man is crazy. I mean, it's completely absurd. Since when is HL2 an (FP)RPG or a Myst-clone?

Man, these people are drinking too much. Thanks god they are wrong and HL2 is just another FPS!

'Monster Closets and Gravity Guns? We don't need no stinkin Monster Closets and Gravity Guns!'

And there are diffrent genre's in the FPS market, and they aren't for everyone, to each his own, but dammit gimme SS2.

And Mayor Dan, typically in SS1 and the SE, enemys would spawn in (not sure to say logical places but after a few levels you could pretty much tell where baddies were gonna spawn, like on pedestals etc). But the thing is, you weren't getting totally blindsided by every other door you open a imp is scripted to automatically hit ya once ya opened the door.
