Age of Conan Announced

The Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures Announcement reveals Funcom's plans for an online action/RPG featuring the famed fictional barbarian. The official website for the project is online, offering the first screenshots from the game, and there's also a FAQ with further information. The game is being developed for Windows, and while it doesn't carry a specific release date, Funcom currently expects to go live in the first half of 2006. Here's a bit from the announcement:
Durham, USA — April 20, 2005 – Funcom announces 'Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures', an Online Action RPG scheduled for Windows in the first half of 2006. A mix of a deep, story-driven single-player experience and a massive and brutal multiplayer end-game brings forth the ultimate representation of the Age of Conan. Now you can enter the brutal domain of the world’s greatest fantasy hero.

In 'Conan' the players will encounter a dark, lush, violent and sinful universe, presented in fantastic graphics and stunning 7.1 surround audio. In a world filled with cruel gods, mythical creatures, lost civilizations and a struggling human race, the mighty barbarian has finally seized the throne as king of Aquilonia. But Conan’s rule is on the brink of chaos, spiraling towards the doom of ancient evils. In this twisted fantasy world, dark magic and brutal combat lurks around every corner, and each man and woman must carve their own unique destiny under Conan’s reign. In the true vision of Robert E. Howard’s dark universe it’s now time for you to become a messenger of death.

In addition to incredible graphics and sound, the game will be filled with unique features like the "Real Combat" engine; a revolutionary new multi-point melee system which allows the players to swing their weapons where they direct it, in real-time! This easy to learn and fun melee system lets the players truly feel they are on the battlefield, and goes head-on against the formulaic nature of online RPG combat. In 'Conan' you can also, for the first time in an online RPG, create player-made battle formations where you can command NPC’s and other players in combat, making for epic multiplayer battles. The multiplayer game also allow the players to form guilds and lay siege to enemy castles, letting their catapults sing their merry song of death as the enemy is crushed to a pulp.

Severance was excellent. But I've been waiting for a hack and slash that has Die By The Sword's level of control. And which is actually good.

And Ultimately Severence Blade of Darkness beat DBTC in terms of usability, fun and dismemberment, and it actually worked in multiplayer too.

I just hope there isn't any "heeling" potions in this game.

IMO, Conan is one of the better tales if u read them through as the older ones (probably 1 to 150), where my favorite Ernie Chan earned his fame. They are well written and have a deep story that ties in as the path goes on.

Um no. Die by the Sword did that ages ago. It rocked too.

Um no. I did it before Die By The Sword in my Q2 TC, and we didn't even have full access to the engine or a budget:

http://mods.moddb.com/2516/

As a matter of fact, DoD was the first "action-adventure FPS" to have multi-choice dialogue (like KOTOR or Deus Ex), searching of bodies, multi-object puzzles/quests, "advanced" AI, 1st person AND 3rd person views w/ cameras, large outdoor environments, and a bunch of other things.

Too bad the whole thing fell apart, only got 4 buggy levels done before the team had to split up for the usual "real life" reasons. :^/ I think with another year or two we could have perfected it. Having access to the engine and a budget might have helped too. :^)

Die by the Sword was ok - but it still had a shitload of kinks to work out.. it was pretty fun to chop off limbs though - too bad it really never looked like an actual sword fight in the slightest - it had an almost surreal quality in that way, like some kind of fucked up ballet

so much money, where does it all come from? we're paying for democracy, never mind the bomb... so much money, what does it do? it puts them in power where they shit on you

Actually i think this might be more like guildwars than anything else - with a smattering of real time combat, reading between the lines im getting seige based multiplayer and instanced zones / dungeons.

if they go for a Robert E Howard version of conan then it will be good ...if they stay true to the movie it will suck. Howard's Conan isnt some hulking muscle bound moron who spews lame one liners

oh and DDO is for nerdlies

Shots look good but it also looks like just another MOG. Huge empty spaces around with nothing to do but grind. DDO is the future.

the FAQ http://www.ageofconan.com/conan/faq.html reads like the kind of insanely optimistic "Proposed Game Features" doc that gets generated in one of your typical alcohol saturated, pre-alpha offsite "brainstorming" weekends that developers periodically hold at the local Marriott.

Every feature from every game ever made gets added to the proposal, along with visions-of-holodeck fluff like "you become a dancing machine of brutal death" and "see the vermin scream for mercy when your catapults sing their merry song of death and destruction".

chyeah right.

If they can implement even ONE of the 57 design features described in the FAQ and make it Fun they'll be doing good.

This sounds way too good to actually become a game, lets see how far it gets scaled back.
