Coppola Down on Godfather Game

Coppola Mad About 'Godfather' Video Game (thanks Ant and Voodoo Extreme) has word that Francis Ford Coppola is critical of the decision to make the Godfather into a video game, an offer he apparently was not given the chance to refuse. Here is what the famed director had to say about the adaptation of his masterpiece on an episode of AMC's Sunday Morning ShootOut set to air this Sunday at 11:00 a.m. EDT:
"I knew nothing about it. They never asked me if I thought it was a good idea," he says. "I went and I took a look at what it was ... What they do is they use the characters everyone knows and they hire those actors to be there and only to introduce very minor characters. And then for the next hour they shoot and kill each other.

"I had absolutely nothing to do with the game and I disapprove," he says. "I think it's a misuse of film."

"all console game" = easy enough for dog to play?

Hmmm, pick up Ninja Gaiden. Not only is it damn hard, its also liable to make you throw your controller against the wall and burst into tears.
I had a gap of 15 hours playing time between one save point and another (there was a boss fight inbetween).

THEN you download the hurricane pack and its harder.

no, dumbass - the point is that the people making the game are doing it for the same reason the book got written

Nobody writes novels to get rich. Most writers write because they love to write.

If something is obvious, does that magically make it right?

who said it was right?? i just said "welcome"

and yeh, i put some words in his mouth - but if he thinks his art isnt beyond commercialism, and that making the game is not his choice at all... i doubt he would be "hopping mad" and bitching about it

Don't bad mouth Bridgette Fonda in that movie. She walked around in only a leather jacket at one point. That is a very good thing.

WELCOME TO PLANET EARTH

If something is obvious, does that magically make it right?

but really its not surprising, and the guy is a fucking moron if he thinks that his art is somehow beyond commercialism - no, no my friend - your art IS commercialism...

and does he think that the movie is somehow his creation alone to do with as he pleases?? no, no my friend.. there were plenty of other cooks in the kitchen

You're putting a lot of words in his mouth there then criticizing him for them...

I think you could make a good Godfather game, to say you couldn't understates the possibilities of games in general. However, you'd need a gaming equivelant of Coppola to pull it off.

I agree, Sophia Coppola's acting spoiled part 3 along with Bridgette Fonda. I guess Coppola gave Sophia a break because the story for 3 wasn't as good as the first 2 anyway.

Guys and gals, I agree with Coppola, but the godfather was already once made to a video game, The Godfather: The Action Game by US Gold back in 92'.

The game back then was also pretty shitty..

2. They will make it an "all console game" which means it'll be easy enough for my dog to play it.

HAHAHAHAHAHA how can you be so fucking dumb. Are you implying pc games that you can auto save every 5 seconds so you never fear dying is easier then games like devil may cry and ninja gaiden. Shit halo 2 legendary mode is harder then any fps ive seen.

But from another article (as pointed out on PoeNews)

But from the march EGM ...
While Coppola himself has refrained from any direct involvement in the game, EA says he has been supportive of the idea. "We did meet with him," DeMartini says, "and he embraced the project--not as something he wanted to work on, but he invited us up to his private library, where we spent many hours, and we have access to all of his notes via this library. He was very gracious, but he's done three of these things and he's really not interested in doing any more Godfather stuff."

The game will suck for two reasons: 1. EA is making it and 2. They will make it an "all console game" which means it'll be easy enough for my dog to play it.

the people that wanted the game made are "the man" and Coppola knows that "the man" owns his creative ass and that he cant do anything about it - but hes also old and acomplished enough to be able to say whatever he wants about anything and get away with it

but really its not surprising, and the guy is a fucking moron if he thinks that his art is somehow beyond commercialism - no, no my friend - your art IS commercialism...

So yeah: Coppola doesn't want to see one of his great films turned into a shitty game. Would anyone?

Just the other day I was thinking it would be pretty cool to have a FPS based on The Conversation..

I can't possibly say how the game is going to be, it might suck; it might rock. Who knows? But to paraphrase a quote I read from the creator of Fight Club (whose name escapes me at the moment) the very existence of the game "demonstrates nihilism. It shows that everything is a commodity, everything can be trivialized..." This seems to be true about Godfather as well. I can't see how any game can encapsulate the experience of watching the Godfather without feeling trite. I guess we'll see...

Godfather 3 sucked for 1 reason, SOPHIA COPPOLA. If a REAL actress were to play her role and portray it well the movie would not have had such poor feedback. I enjoyed the story and I think most of the cast did a fantastic job (including Andy Garcia as Sonny's bastard son)... It's sad that Coppola's daughter single handedly ruined the film but being such a fan of the first two films I enjoyed it for what it was nonetheless. Besides that, a game being based on the Gadfather movies is a ridiculous idea and is destined to be a horrible flop. EVEN IF the game doesn't turn out too bad, it's still going to be slammed for the simple fact that they used such a reputable top-notch film series to base it on.

If that's all you see in The Godfather then most of that masterpiece must have gone over your head, Koblat...

But I digress: This game is a joke, it won't capture the Mafia spirit half as well as Mafia (the game) did, despite its license and budget. The story will be have to be destroyed to make it into an action game, and the whole "feeling" of the movie will be lost. It simply won't have the emotion of the film, and therefore it will be a disapointment.

To think, I was semi-interested in the game due to delusions this could be a Mafia-type game.

The guy that kept italian sterotypes alive by having them mostly kill each other(much like the game) is whining. I hope the cocksucker burns in hell, no just because the movie had 5 minutes between killing rather then the games 2 minutes doesn't make it holy.

Of course he's right but is anyone surprised? Gaming seems to be steadily growing as creatively backrupt as hollywood has been for years. Normally I would say that Coppola's full of his own shit because he usually is but on this one I gotta agree with him 100% The Godfather is a masterwork of modern filmaking, you can't make it into a game and expect it to be great. I'd imagine the game will turn out to be the equivlent of Godfather III except shittier if that's even possible.
