S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Delayed Again

The German THQ News Page (thanks Frans) has word that STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, has suffered another delay. Previously expected for May of this year (story), the game no longer seems to carry a specific release date. No reason for the delay is offered, but GSC Game World's PR Manager Oleg Yavorsky gamely spins this announcement, saying they are pleased that THQ has given them more time to develop their upcoming first-person shooter.

an engine change? This game has "looked" nearly complete for at least the past 2 years, based on screenshots/vids/interviews we've read...

This is starting to follow the same track as Duke Nukem Whenever, but with eye candy.

Is this game becoming the next Duke Nukem Forever, or do I have to wait couple more years before I make that statement?

Everytime I read a STALKER thread, someone keeps mentioning how this game will be so much better then HL2 and FarCry. It may e so, but not untill it is released, and at the current rate, I would be very surprised if this game is released this year. They announced an ambitious game, but are slowly rolling back some of the promised features. Gonna wait for the demo on this one before I make a purchase.

Maybe if the devs hadn't spent half their time giving interviews and telling us how great this game is going to be, we'd have it this May. My excitement for it has waned considerably after so many delays and the increasing number of features that are disappearing or being pared down.

actually, yes.

anyhoo, GSC has mentioned several times now that work on the "World Simulator" (the part of the game code that powers all NPC bahavior) is taking longer than they opriginally thought it would. All NPC's are supposedly going to maintain their feeding (this includes predatory behavior), sleeping etc whether you're near them or not. Its ambitious but I'm curious to see if its really worth all the effort and expense that they seem to be putting into it. Time might be better spent implementing a semi-persistant co-op multiplayer environment instead of a CS-styled tactical multiplayer gametypes that they are planning on.

and now they gots it... im just wondering if it will make a difference in the final product - as its beginning to look more and more like a marketing scam rather than an actual innovation..... hell, no one has even seen the AI in action yet... bad sign

I just thought of something-- they should release a batch of new screenshots to butter up the disappointing news whenever this game is delayed. Seems these are the only occasions when screenshots are not released.

" does ANYONE give a shit about this game anymore?"

Not really. 2004 was a pretty satisfying year for shooter releases.

I'm not at a point where I absolutely refuse to buy the game, like I am with DNF... But it has slipped into the "insignifcant category" for me.

See this as a red flag. When a publisher thinks a game is not ready for release, by gamer's standards it must be really really not be ready. The game promised so much and yet little by little feature after feature has been taken out and it's still in bad shape. This does not bode well for the game. It's not a good omen at all.

What a publisher calls beta, gamers call alpha, what a publisher calls final is called beta for by gamers.
