Irth Online Un-irthed

Magic Hat Software announces development of Irth Online, an MMORPG due in Q2 of this year that's currently in the alpha testing phase. Beta testing applications for the game are currently being accepted here (though my browser tells me it cannot trust the offered SSL certificate), and their "About Magic Hat" gives a feel for the nature of this project: "The development team behind MHS has worked closely together on creating innovative non-commercial MMORPG servers and clients since 1996. The team is committed to the idea of creating a virtual world without artificial limits on player behavior or play style, and trusting players to determine their own game experience. Irth Online is Magic Hat Software’s first commercial MMORPG." Here's the announcement:
DEDHAM, MA – JANUARY 31, 2005 – Magic Hat Software (www.magichatsoftware.com) has announced its new MMORPG Irth Online (www.irthonline.com) is scheduled for commercial release in the second quarter of 2005, and that Beta test applications are now being accepted on the Irth Online web site.

“We waited until now to make our first public announcement about Irth Online because we wanted to deliver early content to players rather than just plans and promises,” said Dennis Robinson, Lead Developer. “Players are encouraged to apply for our Beta test and help improve not only the future of Irth Online civilizations, but the quality of the game itself, which is our highest priority.”

About Irth Online
Irth Online is a virtual world in which players role play characters in a free form, fantasy-based storyline. Players join Irth’s history at a period when a fragile truce exists among the far flung civilizations of the snowy Arcadians in the north, the southeastern swamps and marshes of Morbus, and the southwestern tropical region of Mezoteks – and determine the course of history for each civilization.

The persistent world environment of Irth Online features an open ended skill system. Players may learn any skill offered in the game without facing limitations of race or class. Irth Online's advancement system has a unique skill-over-time feature, allowing all characters to enjoy adventures together, regardless of experience level.

Player battle and fighting include PvE (Player vs. Environment) and PvP (Player vs. Player). Also included either at launch (or shortly thereafter) will be instance-based thievery, looting, and justice, as well as the ability to fully explore, travel, or wage war on the ground, on the sea, and in the air. Opportunities for non-warfare gameplay are also offered, along with safe areas for peaceable players.

Magic Hat Software’s in-house created engine uses the very latest technology in terms of DirectX9 effect files and vertex and pixel shaders (which include per-pixel lighting and bump/specular environment maps); allows creation of highly detailed characters with animation blending; extended visibility for the player (up to 10 miles in every direction); and unlimited, changeable terrain size with seamless background resource loading.

hm, Microsoft canceled "Mythica" (was that the name? it looked pretty good...) and they think someone will really play this? and pay for that? weird

devs, better stop it now before it's too late!

btw. what's so great about WoW?? I tried it now for 2 days and think it's the same like some other games (bit better in one category, bit worse in another) But I know, 2 days is not much, though with all the praising I expected more... oh well I'll continue my "research"

Not that I want to get into a rut here, but 'skill-over-time' isn't unique if it's what it sounds like.

ok here's the deal. Irth online is made up of the Sphere server team. Damian, Nix and a few others.

Sphere server is that Emulator for Ultima Online that used to be the top emu until it was found out how bad the code was and there was like 20,000 Exploits and bugs that people abused. SO they droped support for Sphere. BUT they officially didn't say that.

Shard admins pleeded with them to fix the bugs or release the code but they just ignored all of them and treated everyone like crap.

so after a few months of no response from the sphere team One magical day last year They announced THEIR OWN MMORPG called Irth Online.

which caused a major Devide in the UO EMU community.

and Everyone excluding the butt kissers in the UO EMU community said Irth looks like crap. it plays like crap and it's worth crap.

SO thats how it is.

Shame though. I like Damian. I used to play on the alter realm all the time. 3+ years ago IT was the best UO Shard out there. Now it's Dead.

I mean really, another D&D game this late after all the "greats" (UO, EQ and WOW) are already out?

This game may have worked back in 1999 but not now.

What is with all the mmorpgs being in the same time period? At least Matrix and that Road Warrior one look kinda cool, and lets not forget City of Cheerios (Heroes)

Why not a Wasteland/Fallout mmorpg with ammo being very scarce? I guess Stalker will be about as close to this as we can get until Bethesda does Fallout 3. Maybe then someone will have the balls to try it. But with so many experimental developing houses going under, it's doubtful anyone will have the cash to front this idea. EA does, but they have no balls anymore, sticking to formulaic "safe" games.

Who?

Key employees who make up the company
Who?

As a game, Irth Online is DOA, it's really just a tech demo/resume for a dev team trying to find jobs in the game industry.

I mean there's just no fucking way they can pass that off as a legit game with those graphics in this day and age. *gasp* even Universal Combat looks better than this turd.

DUDE! You just compared some devs work to Derek Smart! That's harsh, man...

This game really does look aweful. The graphics are just really bad. They need to hire 5 or 6 really good 3D artists (especially artists that can do textures well) as the character models and monsters are really lacking. The game world itself looks very undetailed and rather boring. I just don't see this game being able to compete with games like World of Warcraft and EverQuest II.

You mean like WWII Online? But then again, that's more of a shooter. But you have a good point. We're definitely heading that way

I forgot about that one. I was thinking something like the BF series, only I was pretty sure there wasn't a monthly fee...

Why don't we just get it over with and do a WWII themed MMORPG?
