Morning Q&As

  • SWAT 4
There's a SWAT 4 Q&A on 10-David that talks with Irrational's Paul Hellquist about the upcoming tactical police shooter sequel: "The command interface was great for its time, but we felt it needed to be slicker and quicker in SWAT4. We wanted to shorten the learning curve from an hour to a couple of minutes. Our focus testing has proven to us that we have succeeded in this goal. One thing I can’t stress enough to your readers is that NOTHING has been compromised in terms of the depth of expression you have in the command interface from SWAT3. All of the commands from SWAT3 are still there, plus more. We have just removed the complexity of dealing with the interface."
  • Auto Assault
The Auto Assault Q&A on Auto Assault WarCry talks with NetDevil's Scott Brown about their upcoming MMORPG: "Auto Assault is the game we’ve always wanted to play, but we couldn’t because it hadn’t been created yet. It is a fast-paced, action RPG where your actions can have a direct impact on the game environment – you can destroy virtually everything in your path and when you return to that area later, find it as you left it. There’s a great variety of things you can do – everything from solo missions to crafting to convoy missions and clan (our version of guild) activities."
  • Call of Cthulhu
HomeLAN Fed's Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth Update Q&A talks with Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks about Headfirst's upcoming horror game: "We’re not making an FPS. This is a survival horror game played in the first-person perspective. Obviously there will be comparisons, and obviously there are FPS elements in Call of Cthulhu, but its goals and means of entertaining and engaging the player are very different. It is, first and foremost, a horror game that wants to scare the beejeezus out of you, over and over again."
  • The Matrix Online
The Matrix Online Vault's The Matrix Online Question of the Week #18 asks Monolith's Brannon Boren how full-time residence in The Matrix will be possible in the upcoming MMORPG.

You know its kind of funny how Irrational decided to "change things" for their interpretation of the better.

If this game doesnt feel as familiar as SWAT 3, now you know why The Tribes community has been raising so much stink about Tribes Vengeance.

IA is a good SP game dev, but they've got a lot to learn in terms of catering to their audience when it comes to Multiplay games. Its like they abandon the market for a particular title and build it for a completely new audience.

A bit arrogant.

Actually, it feels like the VIP is faster than the rest? Or is it just me?

The VIP is faster because he's not lugging around 50lbs of weapons and armor. If you lighten your load you will move faster too. Take the lighter vest, drop some grenades and other things that you don't use, and notice how much faster you move.

It did feel a bit slow at first, but only because I was used to running at light speed in other games. IMO leave it alone, I like it the way it is.

I thought Swat4 was going to have realistic bullet physics and penetration. Swat3 had it. I have yet to see it in the demo.

Yes I agree that it should be slow but not THAT slow. It shouldn't be fast either as you say. A little slower than ravenshield should suffice. Actually, it feels like the VIP is faster than the rest? Or is it just me?

"is the quicksand run the characters from swat4 do. If it wasn't for that the game would be almost perfect for tactical shooter buffs.

So do they run like normal people then? I like the slower movement. Otherwise it would just be a Q3 clone.

SWAT3 had good character movement speed. There were 2 default speeds, one for stealth and one for dynamic, plus there was a run modifier which was relatively quick- perhaps a little too fast when climbing stairs and such, but in open areas or hallways it seemed farily realistic.

I'd like to nominate "Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth" for the Phantom Award. For remaining in development for so many years without going gold or dying on the table.

And if their isn't a Phantom Award, i'd like to nominate it for the Daikatana Award.

Seriously though, this game better not pull a Dai-whatever-it-was-called. At least it's good to see that they are updating the graphics/physics engine as the tech changes.

Ok I played the demo. I'm a disgruntled ravenshield fan and I must say this is very good. Matter of fact, I recommend it to all ravenshielders. The game has 5 man coop though I wish it was 8. A major issue a lot of people talk about around here (I work @ EB Games) is the quicksand run the characters from swat4 do. If it wasn't for that the game would be almost perfect for tactical shooter buffs. Beef up the speed a tad and you have a almost perfect police game..
