Evening Q&As

  • WoW
There's a Blizzard Q&A on the main page at Penny Arcade (thanks Grasman) discussing World of Warcraft's woes: "The short answer is 'The game is capable of supporting this many players,' but it would probably be helpful to provide some background information. Based on our market analysis, we made some initial calculations about the size of the massively multiplayer online games market in the United States. We then accounted for new customers to the genre based on our previous games. Looking over this data, we did believe that there was the potential for an extremely sizable interest in a Blizzard MMOG. According to our research, other successful MMOGs in the U.S. had achieved roughly 300,000 subscribers after 12 months of operation. What ended up happening with World of Warcraft is that we achieved double these numbers in approximately the first six weeks of launch. We absolutely can support the number of copies we put on shelves, but we believed it would take us longer to get to this number in terms of players purchasing the game and logging on."
  • KOTOR II
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords Q&A on GameSpot talks with producer Mike Gallo about the upcoming Force-powered RPG sequel: "Following up a game like KOTOR is tough, especially when the awards for that game came pouring in. We actually started in the same place on KOTOR II--with a list of "Star Wars" things that needed to be in the game to make it feel like it was part of the universe. We also wanted a darker storyline, and the team at Obsidian Entertainment was able to craft a great story with some memorable characters. Those two things were our top goals from the day we started."
  • Lineage II
RPG Vault's Lineage II The Chaotic Chronicle Team Q&A #2 quizzes the team behind NCsoft's upcoming MMORPG sequel about their favorite bosses and "regular creatures" in the game.

Same old story.. they always say they never expected the # of people playing online at the same time..

Well guess what, because you didn't expect it, now a lot of your players will leave because of all the problems. I know that's what I did with SWG and I know some people are already leaving WoW cause they can't deal with this crap.

The difference is that people might come back to WOW if/when problems are sorted and new content, especially for PVP, is introduced.

A year and a half later, SWG is STILL promising the same things. More GCW. More PVP. Combat Balance. Pardon me if i'm a little weary. But hey, they fixed the sliding 5 feet after sitting bug after a year and 5 months.

I just like how grossly they underestimated the game's potential. They got in six weeks what they expected to have in 12 months. In truth, I can see where they're coming from: MMORPG's a niche market: You don't expect them to break sales records.

However, there should have been some mandatory server migrations when things started getting crappy: As of right now, like 4/5ths of the population are on 1/2 of the servers. And implementing untested hardware/software combos on ten or more servers just has bad news written all over it.

Nice to see they are adding support for 16 x 12 resolution and adding high-res textures.
I doubt the engine could handle too many high-res textures with its age but anything would be an improvement for PC RPG fans.
Darker story sounds good, im surprised there havent been many comparisions to Planescape, with its torutured soul type of charater development.
Well the article says they just signed off, with it expeted in stores 2/10, thou EB list it as ship 2/8.
Should be quite the game with its estimated 40 hours of gameplay, thats seems about twice as long as KotOR.

Then why ship that many copies? I mean, really, if you don't know if your servers can handle 200,000 people, then maybe you shouldn't ship 500,000 copies? This is like Diablo 2 all over again.

It is quite long - you can actually get up to level 30 in this game. It's still pretty easy, though.

I havent really read any spoilers yet, I did hear on the xbox version of a cheat/exploit in some caves of constantly spawning somesuch beast that allowed you to reach a level 40 cap.
I havent heard if they intend to fix that for the PC version.

They did it cause they know that people who play MMORPG's are utterly useless humans with no life who will put up with anything as long as they can reach the next level or get that nice long sword.

Like
Star Wars: Dark Forces IV: Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy dang. too short. You won. The star wars titles are always a bit unwieldy; it's built into the license somewhere, I think.

I'm glad to know that playing the game on a good server (I switched from a bad one) for 90 minutes after my family goes to bed makes me an utterly useless human with no life.

That's just great thinking.
