More WoW Woes

This WoW Gameplay Discussion (thanks Voodoo Extreme) offers a message from Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Morhaime on the ongoing difficulties being experienced in World of Warcraft, their MMORPG. The update describes why 20 realms had to be taken offline, and how players from the impacted realms will be receiving a total of seven free days added to their subscriptions due to this and another glitch earlier in the week. The update concludes with promises and apologies:
I want to take this opportunity to say that we will do everything possible to ensure that unexpected downtime like this does not occur in the future and that if it is necessary, we will do everything possible to give you better warning and keep you informed. In the future, we will avoid doing maintenance during peak hours, unless no other alternative presents itself. When complications occur that could impact your playing time, we will provide that information as well. We failed to do this last night, and I assure you that we are making changes to ensure that we do a better job of communicating with our players next time.

I want to extend my personal and heartfelt apology for the problems that some of you have been experiencing on our servers. We remain committed to delivering the best possible service for you and will continue to work around the clock to ensure that we provide an experience that you and I have to come to expect from Blizzard games.

I'm not defending Blizzard, or saying that WOW is problem free, but I know this... I have had lots of fun with every Blizzard game I have ever played, Warcraft 1, 2 and 3, Diablo 1 and 2, plus all the expansions, and I am having plenty of fun in WOW even now with the issues that have been raised here. A Blizzard game with problems is still better then 75% of the games out there imho.
News flash: Blizzard may have developed World of Warcraft but the Blizzard that made WOW isn't the same Blizzard that made the Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo series of games that we all know and love. Most of the people who were in charge of making those games (with the exception of Tigole) left the company before WOW even went into development. Bill Roper and most of the 'big dogs' formed their own company, Flagship Studios. The people who created Diablo 2 and developed the entire foundation of the near-perfect Battle.net network formed ArenaNet, and they're currently making Guild Wars.

While Blizzard games are certainly better than 75% of the titles out there, World of Warcraft isn't in the same league as any of the other games they've made. Different developers, different results. VU owns Blizzard now, and has been owner for awhile. Why do you think the founders left?

Concerning WOW, I've already cancelled my 3 month subscription since my server's always down and they've provided nothing but excuses. I really can't be bothered to restart my level 48 on another server and lose all of the progress I've made. If they'd offer character transfers, I'd likely stay around, but they don't even have a back-end for that. You'd think that Blizzard, if any company, would be able to foresee the necessity of such an implementation. NCSoft and SOE all have it in all of their games. Why doesn't Blizzard?

At this point, I think I'll just stick to playing the 25% of those games that are better than Blizzard's WOW. We need a few things in life: air, sustenance, protection and pleasure. WOW's not offering any of those.
