You can't be serious. Deus Ex 1 blew it away.

Yeah, we may need to do some drug screening here.

HalfLife 2 was fun, but it wasn't even up to the standard set by No One Lives Forever 2.

Interesting, now that you mentioned that, I actually have to agree. Although NOLF1 is still one of the best FPS in history the sequel was pretty decent, fun and polished unlike HL2.

DooM 3 is also great Bets coding the engine runs flawless, best shadow and lighting ever seen in a game, not overhyped like hl2.

Obviously you haven't played Riddick or you would think twice about calling Doom3 the best shadow and lighting coding ever.

Riddick is the best game of 2004 which has not been hyped for months in advance unlike HL2 and Doom3. And the best of all, Riddick is actually fun.

I guess you didn't have the chance to play NOLF1 or DX1, or else you wouldn't be praising them so much here.

"Best PC game of all time"? Sheesh.

And someone please explain to me, in what areas exactly Doom 3 is innovating. Do not mention the graphics engine, though - the shadow thingy has been done before, while bump-mapping is already an industry standard.

...And a few words to the guy who said that EQ2 is "too dependant on HEALERS". I can't believe that you've leveled yourself up to the 30th level and still cannot grasp the simple concept of interdependency that runs through the entire game.

What if a healer quits the group? Guess what, you find yourself another one. And if you play on a server with low population, that's your fault, not SOE's. Why is that no one bashes popular multiplayer shooters for the same thing? What if your best team guy in Counter-Strike decides to call it a day 30 minutes into the game? Oh yeah, that's a bad game, let's punish it hard.

I bet my ass you've never played EQ2 beyond The Isle of Refuge, otherwise you wouldn't be here talking pure trash.

Chip, Doom 3 KICKED ASS!

I hate that people dont seem to get it, but thats not my loss.

I'm glad I got to play it.

The best thing I can say about Doom 3 is that the original Doom sucked ass, and it always did. I bought Doom 3 KNOWING that I thought Doom sucked ass, and I was BLOWN AWAY.

HalfLife 2 was fun, but it wasn't even up to the standard set by No One Lives Forever 2.

On the other hand none of those games holds a candle to Deus Ex Invisible War.

Deus Ex IW is what I would currently rate as best PC game of all time.

I cant BELIEVE that The Sims 2 has been so snubbed by all awards this year!

It is EASILY the best game released in 2004, yet it's not even nominated.

And Doom 3 is a way better game than Half Life 2, so I'm gonna smash a truck through my head if Half Life 2 wins.

"HL2 is undeserving but San Andreas and Doom 3 are? "

San Andreas, yes. Doom 3, maybe not, but I prefer it over those other games. Painkiller was my overall favorite.

"Doom 3 had tons of atmosphere, but no variation in gameplay. It was like having soup for every meal."

True, but the combat, enemy designs, artwork, and overall gameplay were oustanding.

"San Andreas had a TON of variation, but none of it was done well. They threw in everything but the kitchen sink, but most of it was broken. The combat interface was heavily flawed and left you often firing at walls. Simple processes like changing your clothing took forever. Girlfriends were somewhat amusing but a total waste of time. So was the gym. Honestly, should we reward a game that tries to make you spend two hours watching a guy on an exercise bike while hitting "X?" "

I wasn't too impressed with San Andreas in the early stages, but once I got out of the gangsta section of the game it got really interesting. And seriously, what other game out there has all that stuff in it? But yes aiming was seriously fucked.

"A great concept, a terrible plot, too many broken, useless time-wasters, terrible interface, and the damn problem of finishing a third then being told everything you'd done so far was useless and it was all taken away.
It was a fraction of the greatness of Vice City. They just spread themselves too thin."

It's not as good as Vice City, but it's still the biggest and the best overall game of 2004 in my opinion. And normally I dislike console games.

* Innovation in Computer Gaming

Doom 3 (Activision/id Software)
City of Heroes (NCSoft/Cryptic Studios)
Rome: Total War [#3] (Activision/Creative Assembly)
Half-Life 2 (Vivendi Universal Games/Valve)
The Sims 2 (Electronic Arts/Maxis)

Ofcourse there are innovations within the sequels, but, well Doom3's "innovation" is better graphics. The only innovations going on with HL2 had nothing to do with the game itself. Didnt bother playing Sims2, but it seemed to be Sims Release Number 2. Even Rome's innovations are basically fairly small ones (in the context of gaming industry).

Ignoring City of Heroes, which I know nothing about, it's clearly Rome who should win here but I dont know why Far Cry doesnt appear - I'm not sure how truly innovative it is, but compared to HL2 and D3 it certainly is. Wether Steam should be there is another question.

Still, that level where you enabled the Sentry Bot and went to town with the big boys was probably about the best gaming moment I can remember.

That's what killed me about that game. You had some amazing immersive scripted moments (they stole my baby!), but none of the memorable parts had anything to do with combat after the first hour or so.

HL2 I'm not quite done with. I loved the airboat, not loving the buggy nearly as much. Overall I think the level design is absolutely amazing, the enemies are tons of fun, and the pacing is well thought out, and the dialogue has made me laugh a few times. The boat level, the one everyone said was too long, felt right to me. The buggy level, which previewers wet themselves, feels long already and I'm just starting. Getting out to flip it while being attacked isn't as much fun as I would have hoped.

Halo 2 had the same problem of every room looking the same, but it had the most memorable combat moments of any game I've played. I didn't expect to like the game, but wow. There were so many times that I died, reloaded, and tried to compensate for how they killed me, only to have the aliens sneak up on me in a new way. The AI might not have been bright, necessarily, but it was very varied. Most importantly you fought actual battles.

In retrospect I should give Halo more credit for that - it let you see the AI. In Doom 3 AI was not needed. Something showed up - you killed in. In HL2 thus far it seems similar, only the AI has better ways to show up (admittedly I'm early in, spent most of my time against zombies, and adore the fact that when I duck behind a door to reload the Combine seeks new cover, so when I look back in I waste time finding them again). Halo 2 had moments of larger firefights. You're running around chasing them or they're running around chasing you. You had lots of time to see the AI in action. Much more than the original HL, where everyone discussed how wonderful the AI was but more often than not I'd see the soldiers and kill them in the same few seconds.

Hmm. I guess I respect the Halo shield system much more now.

Half-Life 2 is Great has the strongest fan support but suffers some coding problems.(shadows,sound,etc.)

DooM 3 is also great Bets coding the engine runs flawless, best shadow and lighting ever seen in a game, not overhyped like hl2.but does all these thing add up to the PC GOTY?

Finally we have CoH wich is just a great piece of programming for such a huge project.no history of any server issues.proper server management and great amount of replayablility countless possibilties in character creation and power selection,Living world and finally great eyecandy.

HL2 and WoW could have prolly won the title but their history of problems excludes them form the tilte:"Perfect"
wich belongs to City of Heroes.

Katamari Damacy was a fun game but it was just way too short. Only lasts a few hours and then it's garbage. What about all the equally impressive Japanese games that never get released here?

What's with all the HL2 bashers? That title would definitely deserve its GOTY award. Although I would have liked to see Metal Gear Solid 3 on the list. And if Halo 2 wins I think I might have to shoot myself.

Now if Resident Evil 4 came out last year this would be a different story. I wonder if they just got the nominees from the highest scoring reviews because they didn't have time to play all the games. The press needs to grow up!

Demon Stone got nominated? How? I played the game, the graphics are pathetic. Blocky pieces of crap, even at the highest resolution. It is literally the LOTR: TTT engine with different skins here and there. The characters? Pathetic.

I wanted them to die. They have no depth, they have no damn character to them.

However i do agree with Rome: Total War's nominations. It should win the original soundtrack award, and im highly suprised it isnt nominated for GOTY. Brilliant game, immense replayability, the new features introduced were brilliant. Ok some bugs, but i never had any huge problems with them.

I reckon HL2 will win GOTY purely because it is HL2. GTA:SA will win console and i'd say either Doom 3 or Pirates! would win compu section.

Does anyone know how these games are nominated in the first place? Is it done on sales, or is it done purely on some people's opinion on how a game is?

Personally what they should do is have a website that allows users to physically choose GOTY via a vote system. Surely they cant be that behind-the-times that they can't afford to set up a simple voting system.

But, as people have mentioned before, every publisher will probably claim to won GOTY. It sucks.

IMHO:
• Game Of The Year
Half-Life 2 (Vivendi Universal Games/Valve) [tough call]
• Console Game Of The Year
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Take2/Rockstar North)
• Computer Game Of The Year
Half-Life 2 (Vivendi Universal Games/Valve)

Shame Far Cry doesnt get a deserved nomination, but understandable that they picked the two other FPS's.

My only complaint is City Of Heroes. I played it for one month. Myself and all my friends left about the same time. Some other friends who we told about the game lasted one month, well not even and left. Had such great hopes for this game. After that you realize that not only is each section of the map EXACTLY like the other (with different colors and placement) but the enemies are all the same and your just grinding for XP non-stop like so many other boring MMORPG games out there, when it had so much more potential. The game is heavily overhyped and without knowing the numbers, I would be willing to guess WOW will have more players at anytime and will outlast COH in the end.

World Of Warcraft is so much more in depth, I have friends at level 60 who are creating alt characters and playing it again and probably again after that. I probably will too, because there are a few worlds I have not played as alliance and NONE as horde yet.

BoNeLeSS, not everyone is going to like the game. I've seen people who want to marry it, people who think the whole lot of it stinks, and others who love it right up until the end. If you like it, great. If others don't agree that the game is 'amazing', learn to live with it.

o not award HL2 with the GOTY award or I lose my faith in the gaming industry!

Never have I seen such a bland, boring and uninspiring big-budget game the last few years.

(...)

Big fassades, nothing behind, everything looks like being build for a movie set.

Whatever... and most movies and a lot of movies are fun this way. So basically... ¿you want a scenario behind every door?. Keep real man. HL2 is not a MMORPG.

HL2 is amazing. You can bitch about Steam, about Valve's PR Policy and poor scheduling, but the game itsself is great.

I didn't play enough games last year to have any idea but there was no whole game that just blew me away.

Half Life 2 amazed me.... the biggest dangers you faced in the game were those sections where they made you have team members. If the Combine had gone home for tea and biscuits instead of killing my team members I'd have been a far lesser threat to them. In the original Half Life, I'd see things happening and I'd WANT to find out why and I'd be exploring everywhere I could, hungry for the next tidbit. It was probably easier to accomplish when the whole game was based in the one facility, but it kept me hooked. Half Life 2 didn't have that same pull for me. The couple of levels where you had Dog, or those with the Buggy and, without a doubt, Nova Prospekt made the game for me.

As Beamer says. DooM3 was the same thing over and over and over. I finished it to finish it and see how it panned out, not because I was having much fun. Still, that level where you enabled the Sentry Bot and went to town with the big boys was probably about the best gaming moment I can remember.

Since I played UT2K4 more than anything else last year and still am playing it, I'm giving it my vote;P
