Shedding Light on Dark Sector

A brief Dark Sector Update on Computer and Video Games (thanks Frans) describes how we must remain mostly in the dark about Dark Sector until the hunt for a publisher for Digital Extremes' upcoming project bears fruit, but does offer some new details. Interestingly, while Dark Sector has previously always been referred to as a first-person shooter in an online persistent-state world, this mini-update, which says that DE now has a playable prototype running, describes a third-person stealthy action game, with no mention of an online component:
For one, the game is set in space, in the mysterious realms at the edge of the solar system, where you play a high-tech stealth agent with a host of supernatural powers. The tagline for the game is "every generation a few are born with the power to control," which is not only a sly hint as to the developer's intentions, but a key to the gameplay itself. Using a combination of cyber-implants and psychic skills, you'll be able to manipulate time, the environment and computer systems in a variety of cool ways, giving you a huge amount of control over a highly reactive world.

If PlanetSide is the most viable MMOFPS in the foreseeable future, then something is really wrong with this industry.

If they did indeed abandon the MMOG idea I'm guessing its because of the current saturation factor. What they may be forgetting though is that there should be plenty of room for a FPS/vehicular (space-based) MMOG. Planetside may not get the numbers that more traditional ones get but it holds its own and is pretty profitable from what I've heard. The only other shooter-styled MMOG of consequence on the horizon is Citizen Zero and that is some ways off (I don't count neocron because its a traditional RPG in shooter clothing).

Do they really need to make another Pariah?

Depends how good Pariah is and how much different Dark Sector will be. DE has one studio in Toronto and another in London, each of which is working on one of the games from what I heard.

This space is available for rent

The MMORPG space/ground combat that was implied is what made this game worthy of keeping an eye on. Removing any persistancy will put this into the same category as any other shooter coming down the pike.
