Activision and Vicarious Visions

Activision Acquires Game Developer Vicarious Visions (thanks Frans) announces that Activision has acquired Vicarious Visions, the primarily console developer. Word is: "Vicarious Visions has developed five games that have sold more than one million-units each and is currently co-developing the highly anticipated DOOM 3(TM) for the Xbox with id Software, as well as Spider-Man 2, which will be a launch title for the upcoming PSP platform. In addition, they have developed such popular titles for the Game Boy Advance as Shrek 2(TM), Shrek 2: Beg for Mercy(TM), DreamWorks' Shark Tale(TM) and Tony Hawk's Underground 2 and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro(TM) for the PlayStation game console."

The whole reason Activision snapped up VV is for their alchemy middleware. With EA slurping up Renderware, Activision needs their own middlestuff so their games don't sit idle or get pushed to the side when Renderware drops everything to help whatever EA game is in middleware peril at the time. The dev teams and titles that VV makes is just crappy icing on the cake.

Why does this have to be the normal operation for dev studios? Are they really suffereing without ACTVI? I don't think so, if their track record is so good, What do they need with pushing games in China? Why is the dev studio not hiring a guy to push their sales harder instead of being "soul-stolen" by EA or ACTVI. Its bad news coming. At least smaller devs have a leg up now. Its like Walmart vs Mom&Dad, 2006 will be round 1.

I was generally unimpressed with most of the games these guys put out. Most of them were bad games that just sold well because they took advantage of a good license. I see why a large publisher wants them.

I think this is the EA mission statement you are quoting there sir.

Heh, nobody ever remembers their first game, a PC & Mac space sim, Terminus.
That was okay, apart from the piss-poor actors.
