Tales of Alvin Maker Q&A

HomeLAN Fed's Tales Of Alvin Maker Q&A covers the recently announced MMORPG based on the works of author Orson Scott Card in a discussion with Andrew Tepper from developer eGenesis: "Before ATITD existed I contacted Orson Scott Card about helping out with "a unique sort of MMO" - I had no particular theme or story in mind, but did have the concept for a game based on social puzzles and moral dilemmas (crafting too!). OSC was the one writer who tackled these issues brilliantly. Of course at the time we were one of a zillion unknown game companies with no track record and no experience. Still, we corresponded a bit - that was years ago. I contacted him again recently because I love the Alvin Maker series of books. Almost immediately we both knew that this game must be made, and so we agreed to make it happen."

I'm not familiar with the Alvin Maker tales. Anyone read these want to share what the book(s) are about?

They are an alternative history of Jacksonian America (1820s) with spiritual magic type stuff and a standard dosage of OSC religious influence. A decent read, good character development and the plot lines are decent. If you know some of the actual historical refences about Jacksonian policy (manifest destiny, natives are bad) the series sides toward the native viewpoint of these events.

If you liked the ender series and the earth series, you will probably like this one as well.

Now that was a underated title if I ever saw one as i really enjoyed the FPS mix with puzzles.

I will admitt to not being into FPS that much so when i see one that demands that you think too i grab it soon as i can.

Are these MMORPG,s i keep hearing about any good? im very hesitant to try one as im too much into the Sims2 to try anything atm.

Argh... Jordan started off with a total Tolkein ripoff (small naive people with grumpy wizard and exiled kind being hunted by dark cloaks and flying black dragons, anyone?) and turned some good corners, but I second the previous remark about the terrible portrayal of women. Jordan has no sense of differentiation among his female characters.

Then we have Erikson's Book of the Fallen, a jumble of vastly different character viewpoints with little cohesion, wooden dialogue, giggly evil guys (again in black cloaks), characters who sigh and shrug all the time... with the only salvation being a very well designed and intriguing magic system.

Martin, on the other hand, is God. Complex characters, cohesion, stories to actually relate to and care about, unforseen turns, depths of history and culture... the list goes on and on. Neither Jordan nor Erikson deserve to be on the same bookshelf, heck, not even in the same room as ASOIAF.

song of ice and fire- wish mr martin finish the 4th book soon.

malazan series is also very well written.

but i really i dont want to see them turning into some mmo; may be exception to song of ice and fire where u get to play as tyrion or hound

Wheel of Time Series (come to an end already!)

Actually, it hasn't ended yet. There are a few more books to go in case you didn't know

I want to be the first on blues to formally make a hypothesis regarding a MMORPG. After the last book of the Robert Jordan series, RJ will team up with an MMORPG maker and make a game based on the wheel of time series.

That would actually mean finishing a series that really didn't need to go beyond a trilogy in the first place. Jordan must have been a dairy farmer before he got into writing because he sure knows how to milk things.

A WoT MOG? Who really wants to play a game where you're hassled by bitchy women all the time?

As for OSC's MOG, this thing already has "born to lose" tattooed on its forehead.

What's the Dark Tower series about? That's the one by King, right?

Thanks!

Hijacking thread:
My favorite books: Wheel of Time Series (come to an end already!), Song of Ice and Fire (brutal, just brutal), Dark Tower (might be the best series of all time), Malazan Empire Series (extremely complex but rewarding).

"Andrew Tepper - The game will not necessarily be non-combat."

So there we go, they hyped it up about not having combat, and they actually will... aside from taking their lessons from Orson Scott Card, there's nothing special about this.

But even with OSC, the story may be good, but the gameplay isn't directly related.
