Skill, n. 1) Proficiency, facility, or dexterity that is acquired or developed through training or experience.

Would you not agree that people who have played the game longer tend to be better players? That they possess a certain proficiency, gained through experience, that new players do not? Condescend all you want, but I fail to see how you can separate "experience gained through playing time" from "skill," particularly since that is the very definition of skill itself. Experience with the game WILL improve your reaction time. Reaction time, then, is a skill.

Me, I like CS: Source. Never liked the original CS much, but my roommate and I have been hooked by Source (at least until DOD is released). With all the servers that are out there, it hasn't been to find a good, cheater-free game.

" i agree... it's only when i play CS:Source around 1a.m. PST do I actually find skilled players with headsets coordinating attacks, using flashes properly, and playing as a team... unfortunately i'm too busy playing WoW to play CS:S lately... (*must find purple items*)... lol "

Yeah, there is a LOT of skill in placing a crosshair over a character on screen...

I always hate seeing the word "skill" being used to describe a players REACTION times in these online FPS games.

There are far too many factors which can affect judgement of skill, ie latency, mouse quality, possible cheats.

Something which I would consider skillful is sneaking to the bomb area and defusing the bomb without being seen.

The rest of it is reaction times, and experience gained through playing time.

By the way , I see you are someone else who thinks there is an improper way to throw/use a flashbang or grenade. I don't get that, so maybe I'm one of the ones who don't throw em properly.

ooh, PURPLE items. I have only ever found green ones.

"Games like CS especially are not bot friendly. I can't imagine a bot hiding behind boxes, checking corners, properly throwing flash/he grenades, etc etc."

That's because BOTS do not cheat...

Bots do not need to check around corners because they can see through them.

I'm not sure what you mean by "properly" throwing of flash grenades. On my PC I just set trajectory and hit the left mouse button. I THINK what you are getting at is how when YOU cheat online you like to throw flashes just before you appear around a corner to shoot everyone, and when you throw HE's you like to aim it so it lands exactly at your feet. Aren't cheats wonderful? Well bots can do it better than a Human can, the hard part is in FAKING that the BOTS are missing.

Oh, and something tells me you never played against the BOTS in Condition Zero. They seem to be above average players compared with what you see online, so you will be challenged.

AWESOME!

Now I'll be able find out how good I really am at CS Source. I never seem to be able to kill as well as I can on the earlier CS games.

...but only on good servers with around 32 players. For some reason I just hate playing on servers with 16 or so players...

I'm the total opposite. The best CS games, to me, are between 4-4 and 6-6.

And to the guy about the lan... The most fun I've had at 6'ish lans was from CS. Everybody can be so well coordinated at a lan that you get some great firefights out of a small number of people.

Regarding cheats... I only ever saw speedhack. Oddly enough the guy using it did not even have a 1-1 ratio and was usually the first death of the round.

Regarding n00bs... I haven't had much of a problem with that. Just depends on your choice of servers I guess.

Hiding behind boxes doesn't do any good anyway with all the cheating that goes on in CSs.
Even with Valves VAC.
Wallhackers are rife throughout the CS gaming network.
That's why I don't bother with CS.

That's because VAC2 isn't even turned on. DougV (Not to be confused with Doug Lombardi) mentioned that it will be turned on "soon;" whatever that means.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

Im surprised so many of you say you have alot of problems with cheaters playing CSS. I havent seen anyone cheating on my server since the first few couple weeks when the debug cheats were still accessable. And none of the regulars have ever complained about cheaters either.

Awesome. Maybe I'll actually try CS now. To be honest, I haven't played online for probably 4 or 5 years. I consider myself just an average player, and I never found getting spanked by superior players to be all that fun. Nor spanking n00b players who couldn't put up much of a fight. And then there's the cheating, and the neverending infantile chat... Ugh.

So now I only play bots at home, and with friends at the occasional LAN party. The more consistent experience of a bot-based game is much more rewarding IMHO.

But that's just me.

I must admit I quite like cs source when I have 30 mins or so to burn with some brainless killing, but only on good servers with around 32 players. For some reason I just hate playing on servers with 16 or so players, its just boring. Anyways, back to playing some free anarchy online (level 47 now )

Valve first needs to fix the cheats & hacks, eg speedhack. Also support players & admins so they can ban players as well. You're playing with some ass on a server and you cant kick him. Total gayness. Also, release a good classic map like as_oilrig dammit!

I am having a small LAN with my buddies on the 22. We had thought about playing CS:S, but with only 6-7 people, it's not as fun. These bots might help that.6-7 people on a team is good, as far as I'm concerned.

Joining a server only to see everybody in there is not actually connected and has a 0 ping due to a server crash or something...

But yeah, I *hate* bots in HL games... the AI is so terrible, but of course that is expected from user made stuff.

Games like CS especially are not bot friendly. I can't imagine a bot hiding behind boxes, checking corners, properly throwing flash/he grenades, etc etc.

There may be something more infuriating than connecting to a server which looks full in the server list, then discovering that all of the "players" are bots - but I don't know what that something is.
