I don't think the demo for Myst IV did the game justice. Too short and the night version of that area was boring. When you play that same spot in the full game during the day it was amazing. They even had an effect for moving shadows from the clouds. Then falling leaves, birds, etc.

I really liked Myst Uru, so I can't wait to see how Myst V looks now that we know it will be 3D.

Also, for those who think the games are too hard, they did something new with Myst IV. At anytime in the game you could consult a tip area in the options. And incase you didn't want to have it given away, there were three levels, a hint, stronger hint, and then finally the whole thing explained. So you don't have to buy a guide or consult online.

Also, I got Myst IV for I think $30 on release, and the game was in an actual DVD case in the regular game box. it held 2 DVDs for the main game and then a 3rd DVD containing Myst 3 for free. That was a hell of deal seeing how $55 games still come on 5 cds in paper sleeves.

Of course I also heard that Riven was supposed to be the last one. This was on a television interview with the designers. So when they announced after Riven that the designers were splitting up, I thought "no big deal there's no more games"

Riven was the last game in the MYST series created by Cyan (they did make URU though)

Myst was the very first game I played on the PC. It was what got me into gaming in the first place. It was a sublime, awesome game. You start not knowing anything, not a thing, and you just have to wander around, experiment, and build up the story yourself.

Didn't care for Riven much at all. Then after a gap of several years I just picked up Uru which I'm sort of playing through right now. I have to admit I don't seem to have the patience for it anymore. Maybe years of gaming have changed me. Some of the puzzles seem supremely stupid and I don't see how anyone can get through it without consulting a guide. Also I didn't really care for how they kept whoring for their MMOG in the game. But it is without a doubt the most BEAUTIFUL thing I've ever played. Some of those fantasy landscapes and worlds are phenomenal. Even if I don't quite finish the game the beauty of the thing is well worth the purchase price (and I never say that about games).

I guess I missed out on another Myst game I'm going to get. Then yeah, I'll probably be getting Myst V.

I'm a huge fan of the series, but I have yet to make it past the first area of Myst IV. I made it through Myst 3 without cheating, but I found myself cheating in one of the first few puzzles in Myst IV already. Damn that thing's hard! I haven't booted the game up in a few months because I was put off by the difficulty (and er, Half-Life 2), but I gotta give it another shot.

I remember having to wait 3-4 years for a Myst game to come out. I think it's awesome that they're publishing them more regularly now.

I guess I'm different in that I actually liked Riven (and it was the first Myst game I played). It was challenging at times, but I liked a lot of the puzzles. I also liked how some of the puzzles changed each time you played so it wasn't exactly the same.. and so a walkthrough wouldn't completely give it away. The only thing I didn't like was how each island was on a different CD.. so there was a lot of disc swapping. Although, now you can get it on DVD with others.

As for URU, I liked most of the puzzles and the 3D graphics were nice, but seaching for some of those adventure clothes got aggrevating. I got the free expansion for it too, yet haven't given it a try.

I guess these games are just too difficult for some people. Stick to fps's and you won't feel much brain strain.

I actually think that Riven was somewhat of an anomaly but the other Myst games have been improvements on each other.

Since they introduced the full-motion panoramic views the Myst series really has had a new life. Myst has always been about two things in mind detective work and spectacular environments. While the engine Uru uses is beautiful it is still limited compared as to what can be done with the prerendered panoramics.

The interesting thing about the story in the Myst series is that all the details of the story are not apparent. Every sequel gives the developers to develop the characters a little more.

I welcome this new entry in the Myst series though I would also like a new entry in the Uru series. The more the merrier!

I would like to see another Uru game. I think it was by the same developers, and loosely related to the Myst series, but it was fully 3d, like a FPS. Pretty neat walking around and exploring the ages. It was quite a work of art.

I'm contemplated picking Uru up...for a SP experience, is it worth it?

Thanks!

For what it's worth, Myst 3 was done by Presto Studios, and was apparently their last project before they went out of business. They were a great developer (notable for the Journeyman Project trilogy), and it's a shame they didn't last.

The "fixed point" system (unable to freely wander around) of the Myst games does get old. I tried the Myst 4 demo (not too long ago), and was surprised how short it was--too short to captivate my interest.

If you haven't tried Uru, you can probably find it in the bargain bin nowadays- it's worth a try. The demo is still out there somewhere too.

I thought it was the big thing that Myst IV was to be the last one. Like it was finishing off the story line. Of course now this one makes it sound like it's finishing off the storyline.

Of course I also heard that Riven was supposed to be the last one. This was on a television interview with the designers. So when they announced after Riven that the designers were splitting up, I thought "no big deal there's no more games"

So do the Myst games actually have anything to do with each other? Does anyone from the original game have anything to do with the other games? And where did URU fit in all this?

I never really got into the whole Myst thing, I played Riven some time ago and had no clue of what was going on, so I gave up on it.
However, I just finished realMyst and IMHO it was an incredible experience. There is a real beauty to the different ages, and there's a lot of depth there for people that are willing to spend the time on it. After I had finished (got the green book) I read through the journals in the library and was fascinated by them - they added so much to the experience. It really was a wonderful piece of storytelling. As a game though, sometimes the puzzles were damn difficult or just seemingly arbitrary with no obvious solution, or even an obvious way to eventually come to a solution. It's very easy to just give up on such a game in frustration or tedium.

Are you referring to the Myst franchise in general? Myst (1) was the best selling PC game of all time prior to 'the Sims' - If you are referring to Myst 4 specifically...then possibly you are right.

I thought 1 and 3 were really great...can't comment on 2 (riven) since I never played it.

Couldn't agree more with that statement. I tried a friends Myst 4, and it was eeeh ok, got really disapointed after about 30min doing the same damn thing over and over again.
