Source Update

The Steam News Page offers word on the release of Half-Life 2, Source Engine and Source Dedicated Server updates (thanks Frans). The update includes some performance improvements, including tweaks for writing out save games and thumbnail images that will reduce autosave and quicksave pauses in Half-Life 2, as well as increased cache memory usage for machines that have greater than 512MB of physical memory and an optimized sound cache manager, each of which will reduce sound cache thrashing hitches.

While results are not perfect, things continue to get better with each update that addresses this stuttering issue. This seems better than the last one, and the last one made things a lot better as well. I still feel this game has issues that other games don't have and the problems probably go a lot deeper than any quick update could resolve. While the first level was noticably better, the audio during the first teleportation (attempt) still has pretty bad stuttering during every scene change.

Edit: I said the audio has a lot of stuttering during the teleporation. I meant to say the 'game' has lot of stuttering. It's not just the audio, but the entire game that stutters.

What I wanna see is a real HL multiplayer component that's innovative and has elements of strategy. Think of it like counter-strike except Combine vs Rebels where you buy weapons and do objectives, like maybe the Rebels gotta blow up a Combine powerplant or the Combine has to assasinate a Rebel leader. It would be great to be able to use turrets and place landmines and that kind of thing. Also making it class based would be cool too having medics and ammo people. If someone does this mod, I GUARANTEE if you do it right it would blow counter-strike away. SOMEONE MAKE IT

I want to go out and buy the DVD collection but I heard that after you register with Steam you have to be online all the time to play the single player game...i will be moving soon and I am going to lose my internet connection for a while....now is this true or is it a one time thing and i will be able to play without an internet conenction...when i move? I know i won't get the updates until i get a connection...thanks

You have to register / unlock the game once (online), but after that you can play with no internet connection

I bet you'd be bitching even more if they'd delayed the release to fix these bugs (that effect relatively few people).

good going Valve. It wouldn't make sense to just be able to buy a game and play it single player without having an internet connection. Man those guys are smart.

But anyway, for me, bashing steam never goes out of syle. It's just so damn deserving.

You only have to be online once when you install the game.

This was flat out stated initially on game release, and turned out not to be true do to a bug, which Valve acknowledged, which I myself experienced, and said bug has been sqashed.

After about a month, I was forced to reconnect and update my steam and half life 2 etc.

Instead of flat out stating this is true, let's just say as far as we currently have knowledge of, barring unforseen circumstances, you most likely only need to connect to the internet once during installation and setup.

So are Doom3 flashlight jokes, but those won't let up any sooner.
