2004 Vaporware Awards

Wired News's 2004 Vaporware Awards (thanks Mike Martinez) offers their annual attack on failed promises from the tech industry, briefly mocking last year's lifetime achievement winner Duke Nukem Forever before taking shots at delayed and missing projects such as Alienware's Video Array, Team Fortress 2, and RADEON X800 cards. The "appropriately named" Phantom console system nabs the top spot after a near miss last year at number three.

maybe they're just conceeding DNF as a given...cuz if they kept putting it on the list every year. Then it would essentially be the top 9 and not the top 10.

I think everyone who cares gets the picture already that DNF isn't coming out soon. its old news. they gotta spread the smack around more y'know?

"You know what would make me really really laugh? If DNF comes out at some point and it becomes the best FPS ever made."

For a game that will be well into a decade of production by the time of it's release, I expect nothing less...

DNF doesn't belong on this list. It hasn't been widely advertised, at least not in 2004. Heck, I've barely heard a peep out of 3DR in the last year.

A lifetime achievement award, I can see. On the 2004 list, no.
It's the land of the brave, and the home of the free, where the less you know the better off you'll be.

You can get the X800XT PE...

Go to the corner of Nekazanka and Prikopy. One p.m. Buy a pack of Dunhill and ask the man sitting on the bus stop bench for a match.

Just put the mask on when he tells you and don't argue. You will go to see Max and maybe get to buy the PE.

Well, I've looked and can't find one so it is therefore not available and must by definition be vaporware.

We have seen Screen Shots of DNF, even if they where 5 graphic engines old. So, it obviously exists too, some what, in some form
I've also seen both videos and photos of the Phantom console.. I guess vaporware means its not likely to come out very soon..

I personally think the jury was 100% right in naming Phantom #1, I guess they figured DNF has had enough after the lifetime achievement award. Call me naive but I believe both TF2 and DNF will come out some day, Phantom , on the other hand is a BULLSHIT P.O.S that will NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER see the light of day. and I will stand by that

As far as I'm concerned, the card is still vaporware. Maybe my timing is always off, but I have yet to walk into a store and see one on a shelf.

Yeah, and as far as I'm concerned, Japan is still vaporware. Sure, I've seen it on the map, but every time I've walked outside my house it's not there. That must mean it doesn't really exist.

Duh.

It wouldn't be so bad if they were just aiming at the PE, but they claimed the entire X800 line, which is just BS.

ATi just makes enough to send to reviewers, and sale a few, so they can say they have a card that is good as or better in some things than NVIDIAS top o’ line. They could not mass produce it and sale as many as people want to buy, in that price range, they would simply lose millions.

It might exist, but it is also VW.

The problem with that line of thinking is ATI has (apparently) made these cards available for sale in limited amounts. DNF has in no way been available for sale.

Well, DNF should certainly BE on the list, and it's not...

Very true. Wired paid DNR the ultimate vaporware "compliment" by putting DNF on the "Vaporware Hall of Fame" last year, I guess just to make room for other deserving nominees.

I don't understand why some of you guys can't accept the fact that the X800XT PE exists (or existed).
It has been produced, people bought it, some of them even posted here so it's definetly NOT vaporware.

DNF, now THAT'S VAPORWARE.

We have seen Screen Shots of DNF, even if they where 5 graphic engines old. So, it obviously exists too, some what, in some form. The simple fact is, ATi was able to produce only a very small amount of X800XTPE. They are incredibly hard to find, and usually if you do find it somewhere, it is actually special order. Yes, maybe some people did get lucky and find one on the store shelf, but then again someone could get just as luck as guessing George Boussards (SP?) password to his computer (statistically), and get DNF that way.

And before you tards call me a NVIDIA fanboy, save your self the trouble, I have had many ATI products and plan on buying some in the future. The truth has no affiliation with either company.

I have an X800XT PE; an amazing card. I got it through a buddy of mine who owns a computer shop. He's been unsuccessful trying to get another one through his wholesalers though.

well I just checked my box and it's a MSI X800 XT Platinum Edition, so there! Like I said I didn't even know about the PE, I just bought it at a local computer shop. Is there even a X800 XT that not's a PE (not talking about the Pro)? What's the difference?

A buddy of mine has an X800XT PE. I've used it, played HL2 on it, caressed it lovingly, etc. (sure, I've rubbed various body parts of mine against it -- so what!?) In any case, sure its scarce, but it does in fact exist. It shouldn't be on the list.

Umm I have a X800 XT, got it the day before HL2 came out. It's not the PE whatever that is, but I've had one for a couple months now, what's the big deal?

To me that is like saying, yeah, I got a 2004 Corvette. The SE? What the hell would I want that for, this is just as good.
