A lot of Unrealers do play offline, they have since the original Unreal Tournament. Very difficult to tell how many (majority definately seems like a stretch), but release a mod without decent bot support and they pop out of the woodwork.

The reason is simple - the UT series has always had quality bot AI and the multiplayer landscape is simply getting more and more annoying to play with. Ah, the good old days when it was just the occasional neo nazi racist bastard you had to deal with, and not a twelve year old singing like cookie monster into his microphone.

I would also go with the assumption that a lot of people play offline--just from personal experiece. My brother played UT2k3 to death offline. My brother-in-law played 2k4 to death offline. Netiher EVER got online.

That's a pretty ridiculous assumption if you ask me. More likely is that the majority of people who bought UT2k4 don't play it AT ALL anymore. I bought it the first week it was out, and it was uninstalled a week later. Most of my friends (who are all Tribes fans as well) did the same.

Not really.

I know a lot of people that only play offline with bots. Granted, that ratio doesn't justify x00,000 owners -> 7,000 online players, but it happens.

At least in the case of my friends, they are still able to play team games without the f*cktards out there. Team killing and griefing is bad enough, but UT2004's voice aspect (both microphone and text-to-speech) makes things ugly.

I was online the other day, and I was hearing constant phrases constant "I Like little boys" and what not. I can take a joke or whatever, but the guy was just going way too into it, and I decided to leave the server. It was just too creepy. Then, in my next game, some jerk on my own team was camping near our teleport zone and killing team mates while someone else would do everything in their power to make our day hell.

Bots just play; simple as that. While they might not be as original or skilled as real people, at least they're consistently fun and don't describe their preference for pre-teen children.

Sales numbers. UT2004 sold hundreds of thousands of copies yet there are only about 7,000 players online at any one time. Anecdotally, I personally play offline quite a bit as do many other people I know.

I like this game and the single player is fun. But they lost the team work of the first two games. If you didnt play as a team in T1 or T2 you lost no question. I also miss the deployable stuff. The vechicles in this game are nice, but the maps are too small for them to be too much of any use.

I hate the small maps, another game that would kick major ass is Star Wars battlefront if the maps were bigger.

TV MP isnt horrible. If you liked UTk2004 and want something with better CTF gameplay this is your game. The sad fact, however, is that they watered the game down too much compared to Tribes 1 and Tribes 2. TV is analagous to making a new CounterStrike and deciding to remove all gernades and only have one machine gun, one gun, and one sniper rifle. You get the picture.

And let me remind all of you, that Halo, UTK2004 etc all got their conceptual gameplay that invloved team vs team in large immersive environements from the original Tribes. Its sad, because Tribes broke a lot of ground.

Take a gander at the vid URL's below. Some real Tribes gameplay. Theres no strafe crouch, run strafe crouch run boredom here. And note, Tribes was never know for gorundbreaking graphics, it was always about the gameplay.

This game was great, BUT OF COURSE THE HARD CORE TRIBES FANS HAD TO HATE IT!!! I loved this game, it was fun as hell and I paid $50 for it and it was worth every penny! They should not of even called this TRIBES if the fanboys all denounced it. They knew it was going to get slack before it was even released from the feedback from the demos. The graphics were fantastic (Definately better than UT2004 graphically) I didn't even think the UT2004 engine could do bumpmapping until I seen this game. It's obvious that alot of love went into this game from the developers and it didn't go unnoticed because the reviews were all mostly very positive. This game is a victim of bad timing and a hardcore fan base that it hard to please. GAME SEQUELS ARE SUPPOSE TO EVOLVE THE GAME, if they didn't every FPS would still be playing identical to DOOM1!Well chalk up another franchise for the PC down the drain, if there is another Tribes game it'll be on a next gen console and PC gaming will loose a little bit more. FUCK THE CONSOLES! I WANT PC GAMES TO THRIVE! I want games to be successful if they are good quality and this game certainly deserved success. The single player was the best part of the game for me, its just a shame that it failed...

Some stuff I have read indicates it isn't quite as good as the original
While I am a fan of U2 XMP as I played it about 6 hours a day for over a month back when it was first released, I also found it to be fundamentally flawed with its poor network code, horrendous vehicle control, and minor gameplay objective and imbalance issues (don't get me started on the gas grenades). The game was fun overall, but it needed the kind of fixes that switching to the improved version of the Unreal engine used in UT2004 would provide. Just the better network code and vehicle support alone would make playing a UT2004 version of XMP a vast improvement over the original.

I have not tried the current beta version. Some stuff I have read indicates it isn't quite as good as the original, that it feels different. If it playes faster, I a fine with the difference. But I hope that in general the weapons will be about the same.

The thing that worries me most about the lackluster response to T:V is that there will not be another Tribes game...

If that means we don't have to see more of the Vengeance style of play then this is a VERY good thing.

Edit: This thread just put me in the mood to play some T2 I'll see you on MoFo's ^_^

As another Hard core tribes guy...Compltley disappointed with this one. As an Engie in both T1 and T2, to see my defensive choices be basically a 2-hit kill turret or get in light and chase chase chase doesn't cut it. Where did my Pulse sensors go? Motion detectors? Turrets that actually do damage??

you hit the nail on the head. they lopped off half of the fun when they disposed of defensive playing in T:V. I thoroughly enjoyed placing (re; farming) defensive turrets and sensors while babysitting the gens or flag. So did many others. Contrary to what Tribalwhore says, T2 did this part of the game beautifully.

I'm also looking foward to Renegades

At least for me, no bots = no sale. Irrational should have learned from Epic's example - the majority of UT2004 players spend the majority of their time playing that game OFFline.

I bought Tribes V for $30 on Ebay, but within 2 weeks, it was $15 on ebay. Was it worth 30? nope. I got bored within a couple weeks. They never should've believed that CTF gameplay was popular. CTF gameplay faded away with Team Fortress. Instead, there should've been an objective destroy mode or something that resembled war. It would've focused the game more on combat. The territorial control mode of single player should've been brought over to multiplayer, and THAT should've been the main mode of the game.

The game is now $15 or less on Ebay, total, so it's quite a bargain at that price. Tribes, like so many unique and innovative franchises of the past few years, is a failure because of too much uniqueness, and not enough "focus group testing". Too many game companies get a new idea, but then fail to see if anyone actually enjoys it. So they waste years of development because no one focus tested..
