Retribution Unveiled

The Retribution Website (thanks Frans) has first details on Retribution, an upcoming first-person shooter in the works at independent developer U-235 Studios (seemingly unrelated to Jaguar developers U-235, likewise named for the isotope powering Little Boy, the first atomic bomb). Described as a "partly funded project" that "needs community help," here's a description of the game, which uses Artificial Studios' "Reality" engine:
Your father an CID (Criminal Investigation Division) officer killed for getting too close, your mother murdered in cold blood. You watched the entire thing, now you're out for revenge. Assemble a crew or go it alone, follow the trail and finally get your revenge. Take on the Navy, Marine corps, drug lords, armed cilivians and more.

Hi All,

An interesting thread you have going here. Just wanted to add my two cents and a few points made here.

Firstly, thanks for pointing out the grammatical error on the main page. It has been rectified!

Secondly, for those saying 'where's the screen shots'. They are coming. I would like to point out that we actually hadn't added Retribution to any Gaming websites apart from 'Game Development' sites. It was picked up by an XBOX Gaming site, and has snowballed from there. We didn't intend to put ourselves on gaming sites until we neared the end of our prototype. Anyhow, it is generating quite a bit of interest, which can only be a good thing as far as getting decent backing from a publisher.

To address a few negative comments made, a partly funded prototype of this nature is still in the hundreds of thousands of dollars (larger than quite a few independent game budgets - and that's just the prototype). Making a good game costs a heck of a lot of money, just check out the engine licensing costs alone for next generation engines and you'll see what I mean!! For those suggesting Vaporware, all I can say is wait and see.

The storyline...again, wait and see. We're working on making it quite interesting and hopefully not your run of the mill game. Obviously we can't go into details as like a movie, you don't 'really' want to know what's going to happen before you watch it

Anyhow, we will be posting screen shots in the near future, keep an eye out!!

- Will Kruss

Having just finished HL2, I don't see how anyone will reach the bar that was set from it.

I recommend "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay" for the PC if you haven't played it yet. I'm not saying it's better than HL2, but it definitely surprised me for something that was (1) based on a movie and (2) ported from the XBox.

Plus gogamer has it for $27.90.

Wow, Cheese, that was...uh, er, insightful...I think...However, I have some things to add (or subtract, depending on your mood, I suppose) to your statements, if I may. I really don't think most publishers developers are into doing the same thing over and over again. Sure, there are a few that just are in it for the cold hard cash, but I think a lot of them want to genuinely create something new and successful. Having just finished HL2, I don't see how anyone will reach the bar that was set from it. And because of that, many who try are going to be labeled as doing the same old crap, when in reality they are trying something new...

I hope that made some sense...I really shouldn't post when I first get up...

Harbinger, judging from the last 19 of your 20 posts, you have little that's positive to add to anything at all. I doubt you're here to help them with their "break" in any way, but if you are, please prove me wrong.

This is the kinda stuff that i love, who the F are you that Mr Harbinger has to explain himself too huh? go F your self this is a game forum not a serious place so go back to USENET or any of the other sites and stop flattering yourself thinking that anyone has to prove anything to your egomaniac ass.

NOW IN OTHER NEWS AROUND THE GLOBE...... this game does look good and i hope they never stop trying to make games, good, bad, medioca who gives a rats ass about games long as they keep making them is all i care, its when we are stuck with one type of game or one type of games that pisses me off.

Every third game released these days has a WW2 tie in and every 4th game released is a RTS. Dont get me wrong I love WW2 and RTS but sheesh I thought Kampgruppe for the C64 was good, which was released while most of you were still forming in the womb. now we have 2005 the year of hey lets jump on the bandwagon of what ever is succesful and copy that formula till the gamers eyes bleed, What do modern gamers know about varitey. nothing all they want are flashy graphics "which is the norm by the way and give em plenty of guns to kill stuff with , yeah yeah thats a good formula and lets keep repeating this cycle cause it lowers RD costs and keeps our publishers happy cause of tried and proven results, Bahhh i say to the gamers they dont need innovation and if i see a innovative title im gonna can it quick cause its a waste of company time and money. Ummmmmm

And if you cant figure out this post go F yourself ahead of time before i even have to hear your foolish rants.

BTW happy newyear

Actually, Anarchy Online spent it's time wisely and is doing rather well (I suppose, I don't actually play it, just looking from the outside)...now if we could just get Galaxies in shape, we wouldn't need anything else, right?

So... Are you supposed to be, like, the Harbinger of the Death of MMORPGs? Because that would be pretty sweet. I'm sick of them all.

Or are you supposed to be the harbinger of death in MMORPGS? Because that's decidedly less sweet.

The game tag line could be..."You argued about politics on the Blues News thread ...now play the game."

I think "Terrorist Takedown" might have that one already locked up.

Really? Maybe posts 20-40 were more positive or maybe... what the heck does that have to do with this thread? That's about as useful as your ridiculous argument of allowing sloppy PR releases for a game because the President of the United States can't talk. If I have something positive to add about this game, I'll let you know.

Hmmm...that reality enginbe looks sweet; especially the occlusion culling and wysiwyg editor (plus the other rendering perks!).
I just wonder: I bet that using such a middleware platform really makes modding a game built on it much, much harder (just look at games using Renderware). Which is a shame.

As for Retribution: all the more power to these people, but the story does sound contrived and hackneyed. I say keep the tech/gameplay ideas and get a propper writer to devellop a totally new story. Hell, the story doesn't need to be original (shit, a Schwarzenegger-like 'Commando' or 'Predator' will do nicely if the game play is there), but reading a story like this makes me think it will actively detract from the game.

Yeah, this games really innovative. Going by their press release, the story sounds rather tired and unoriginal. Do we really need another "angry hero" bent on revenge??

I hope I'm wrong and this is the greatest game ever made, but in an age of million dollar budgeted games, I doubt this will be the case.

Blue would not have to be periodically corrected.

Hey, HEY! No bashin' Blue...we all know who really writes the news posts...Hudson...so we excuse it. Kind of a hush-hush thing, you know?

I create a lot of content for various online and print publications. Nothing is more annoying than someone that finds a typo and brings it to you in flashing lights, as if they just found the solid proof that they are better than you. It's childish, really.

Nit-picking with grammar is silly. Anyone who has never turned in a single paper, posted something on the Internet, given a proposal, presentation, or press release with any typos can bash others for making mistakes. Everyone else should just accept typos as a fact of life. Everyone makes them. Everyone screws up. Otherwise best-selling authors would not need editors. Press houses would not have releases triple-checked. Blue would not have to be periodically corrected. Get over it.

Great idea. No one cared about this thread when it was about a game, so let's turn it into a political flame war. I'm sure that's just the "break" they needed.

lol

The game tag line could be..."You argued about politics on the Blues News thread ...now play the game."

My apologies for any instigation on my part.

On topic - the game does sound promising, but when they list off a impressive bunch of features before implementing them - they always seem to be setting themselves up for a letdown (and heavy criticism here) at a later time when some of the features are removed. Recent games removing co-op play after it had been promised for the longest time (STALKER - I think was one of them)would be a good example.

Fine, you wanna nitpick, go ahead. The white house handled it; it was a presidential conference. If you'd like i can rephrase it to say "white house" instead. Some people just synonomize the two. I guess i'm one of them.

Edit: Don't get me started on Bushisms. That guy speaks far worse than U-235 writes and he runs the damn country. Give em a break.
