Everown Revealed

The Everown Website (thanks Tiscali Games) is online with first screenshots and info on this PvP online tactical action game in the works at Czech developer StringData. Here's the deal on the game that seems to take the Quest out of the MMO experience, replacing it with Ownage:
In Everown, we want to recreate a similar style of combat, but without the endless leveling treadmill we're seeing in every new MMORPG of this day - each player will be given the same chances, or rather the same potential, upon the start of each match. But what weapons you wield, what armor you wear and what skills your train, those are the choices you have to think about carefully, as each of them shapes your character in a different way, enabling you employ specific types of tactics while denying you the other.

Everown is a multiplayer-only game, focused on contesting against your friends over Local Area Network (LAN) or players from all around the world through built-in Internet Matchmaking System. It will be free to try, giving those of you not yet adjusted to online gaming an unique chance to find out that nothing can beat the immersion of battling against a sentient human being instead of a mindless computer drone.
Update: We have also received some release info from the developers: "Everown is scheduled for release in 2005 and as a pure multiplayer game will support both LAN and Internet play, with its tactical focus enabling it to be played even in high-ping environments, such as on 56k modems or together with your friends overseas."

I've started accidentally slipping into a more phonetic mode of typing, when playing games online. You just mash out how it sounds, and I've done stuff like that before - four letter words, etc. Stuff I should shoot myself in the head for typing. It's a strange phenomena.

From the Stalker website FAQ:

Q: What is the meaning of "S.T.A.L.K.E.R"?
A: The meaning of this abbreviation is carefully hidden by the developers. Most likely, the decoding is left to be revealed in the game.

Uhhh, 'not like anything els'e and 'original' are both useless if it also sounds retarded. 'Poophat' would sound original for a game, but it would also be just as retarded as anything I just named.

As for American games...maybe you get 'Black and White' and 'Grand Theft Auto' mixed up, but I don't.

First of all, STALKER is a name of a Soviet underground book written by the Strugatsky brothers, and I have no idea why they put dots in the name, maybe to keep silly non-Russians guessing.

Second of all, this is NOT an MMORPG, just look at the description, Lan or match-making. It looks to be more like some kind of 3rd person RPG-like PvP-game.

The question is WHY? Anyone who wants that can play Neverwinter Nights, Nox, Diablo, or any of those RPGs which have multiplayer already.

If it was an MMO, it'd be cool, but this just seems like a half baked RPG to me.

It's a strictly PvP MMORPG? I'm having too much fun WITH the quests in WoW. I do like this bit though:

giving those of you not yet adjusted to online gaming an unique chance to find out that nothing can beat the immersion of battling against a sentient human being

News Flash: If someone hasn't tried Online Gaming, I doubt your product is going to be the one to pull them in. I can just see it now "Hmmmm, I've heard of this online gaming, but I'm not -- OMG, a game where I'll get my ass kicked at every turn!!!! I'm buying it!"

Belgium is not in Eastern Europe (where Divine Divinity comes from) and Bet on Soldier is made in France (which isn't in Eastern Europe either).

But to say the least, these titles sound original and not like anything else, as opposed to many American games

Another weird-sounding game name from a Eastern European developer, following on the heels of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (is that supposed to be short for something?), Paradise Cracked, You Are Empty, and Bet on Soldier.

Don't forget about Divine Divinity, and that one from last week that had 15 different names, depending on which country you bought it in...

CrackSmoker of the year still goes to whoever coined Divine Divinity...

"...nothing can beat the immersion of battling against a sentient human being..."

Well, AI hasn't advanced to the stage where it can recognise the most suitable part of the anatomy, and whom it belongs to, to recommend you interact with. So far any attempts at this have resulted in nonsensical statements, such as "go suck yo' own elbow", and several dislocated shoulders.

Once this barrier has been overcome though, AI will be at the same level of sentience as your average CounterStrike player. We will then be able to consider human-to-human multiplayer obsolete.
