Gothic III Q&A

There's a Gothic III Q&A on World of Gothic looking down the road to the third installment in Piranha Bytes' RPG series (thanks Doupě.cz) talking with "KaiRo" about the game: "In the past, we always read each and every feedback from community and integrated it into the successor. We also followed this path for Gothic III. Of course, we have a very clear idea about what we want to achieve but in many points your suggestions are an important decision guidance. Anyway, there is a little problem. At some point, the design phase is completed and we are busy arousing the created vision. During that phase, it is no longer possible to make huge changes to the gameplay because we cannot break up the coherent overall concept afterwards. It happened frequently that we get emails of the kind 'Please implement a multiplayer mode' three months before the release of the game. Of course, we are not able to consider these suggestions. But be assured that every of your suggestions is coining the world of Gothic in some way. Even if an idea seems to be absurd, it is still able to provoke interesting thoughts."

controls were bad... it was not possible to sidestep and attack at the same time because you had to use the same keys to attack as you do to move

it is alot easier to play gothic with a game controller tho

but i do hope they revamp the system a bit...

The controls in Gothic games are NOT crappy. They are just a little different than in most games. I've finished both games and never thought that the controls were bad. After a little longer than normal learning curve the controls felt very very good, natural and intuitive.

I've always been amazed (and also stunned) by how much people say the controls are bad. Maybe they are not very open minded or just too lazy to learn a new way of controlling a game...

The only thing I'd wanted, control wise, in Gothic games is mouse based inventory.

is this the sequel that fixes the shitty controls?

Gothic 2 used an improved control system but still not perfect. Sometimes it felt like the guys a PB were sitting in front of green screen monitors with no concept of what a mouse is. OTOH, the controls soon become intuitive and allow for a decent combat system. If you absolutely can't play the game because of the controls (and to the best of my recollection both G1 and G2 allowed a fair amount of customisation - the problem was that you very soon got yourself in trouble as changing one key binding meant changing three others in a fatal spiral of disorientation until you had to no choice but to start slapping at the keyboard with your feet just to open a door. Learn the default controls and it was fine after a couple of hours.) then it's your loss. I had G1 for almost a year and started it 3 times before a dearth of games forced me to stick at it. Killed isometric RPGs for me stone dead after that.

...anyone know when they're releasing anything for the xbox?

From the Q&A:

World of Gothic: Some time ago, you posted two job offers on your webpage. Did you find someone? In the job offer for a programmer you said that programming experiences with the X-Box and PS2 were advantageous. That led to a lot of discussions in the community. Do you think about releasing a console version?

KaiRo: All vacant positions were filled with competent and very nice New-Piranhas. At the moment, we are only working on the PC-Game Gothic III. If there will be more afterwards depends on the technical possibilities. To be prepared for the required evaluation, we looked for people with experience in that field.

seriously, once i heard g2 used the same screwed up not-entirely-customizable controls as g1, i stopped reading about it.

No details yet what engine Piranha is using for Gothic 3. Rumours are that it is a licensed but, of course, *heavily* modified engine.

HL2 uses the Havok physics engine that is integrated into Source: http://www.havok.com

I cannot wait for G3. Easily the number one game on my list...

Didn't see anything about what engine they are using.
They did talk about HL2, physics.. are they using Source?
