Hi - had the same problem. Can't jump anymore, no way to continue through the Citadel. Did you ever find a solution? As far as I can tell, there was no fix as of Jan 10 2005. Thanks. proto@protosound.com

I support VooDoo's opinion completely, and agree with him.
I won't be trying HL2-demo, nor will I buy the full game.
This Steam stuff gets my hair up. It does things I don't want for sure and nobody knows exactly what Steam does do (except the makers). I don't like this at all. Also, there are other ways to provide the service Steam does, without the intrusive 'functionality'.

This kind of 'business' needs to be halted. If it won't be, it will get worse, bit by bit. It seems the only way (ever) to let companies know about consumer's dissatisfaction, is to not buy their product. This helps in making less profit, which companies are sensitive to.

So, too bad, no HL2. I hope others do the same.

It didn't have the answer to my question (i typed in "where can i can i see what i'm downloading") which is infruiating.

The closest you might get to that is, with Steam running, right click on the tray icon and select Monitor, from the pop-up. If a game is updating, it'll tell you, and give you a percentage. This does not, however, work when the SDK is updating - it'll say nothing is being updated, when the SDK is in fact getting updated (and you see your net connection downloading SOMETHING). Hopefully they'll fix that soon.

I don't blame you for not wanting to submit al that info just to ask a question. There should be (in a perfect world) an option for people that haven't bought the game yet.

If you're concerned about stuff updating, you can also right click on each game in your Steam list, select Properties, and change the drop down box from "Always" to Never keep this game up to date. I generally wait about 2-3 days after each patch, just to make sure it didn't hose anything, before I update.

Just checked the FAQ, cheers for the link.

However:

1. It didn't have the answer to my question (i typed in "where can i can i see what i'm downloading") which is infruiating.

2: To ask a question, i have to supply my Steam account number, my login detail and my HL2 CDKey. I don't want to do that. Well i don't want to and i can't. I can easily find my login/steam account number, it's the cdkey thats the problem. The case is somewhere in my house, and i have no idea where.

The reason i don't want to input that information is because i don't. I like anonimity when doing FAQ's and survey's. I don't want people to know my address, phone number etc. etc. just from either askign a simple login detail for something, or requiring you to input it before you can answer/ask a question. I get enough bullshit calls during the day from (most often) a bloody recorded message trying to sell me something, or some crap company that either got my details from another company, or randomly picked me out from a phone book, and insist on putting an indian/scottish/ non-native english speaking person on the phone jabbering something you can't understand and not taking no for a goddamned answer.

I don't like giving my details to companies unless it's something important (billing address/delivery address), and i get annoyed when companies you have no intention of giving your details to require you to give them to do anything with their software.

That whole conversation is true. Don't entirely know what my point is, but i think it's basically to do with if you wanted to install it and play it offline with no intention of playing online, why is Steam needed? I know the whole anti-hacking debate etc., but i just wanted to allow my brother to play the game and see what it's like. Now he'll have to use my computer which is a bit of a pain in the arse.

Why didn't you just login to Steam for him and let it redownload (or installed w/ your Steam ID)? You can run it on more than one machine, just not at the same time. I've run it on a laptop and my home computer, and as long as both aren't connecting to Steam, you're fine. And the Steam FAQ says you'll be fine.

Then, when you leave to go back home, uninstall it...

This is a true occurance that happened last night.

I was playing NFS:U2 doing the last race possible when my brother comes into my room and says "Hey bruv, you have HL2 right? Is it downstairs in the box?" I replied yes as i had yet to unpack it from my box i brought down from university.

Not paying much attention i get to the last lap of the race when suddenly it hits me "He can't play it. I've registered it to my Steam account so he wont be able to register it to his one when he creates it."

So i pause the race and go to my brothers room and say "it just occured to me you can't play it"

"what?"

"Yeah its registered to my Steam account so you can't play it"

"Nah it's ok, I'm going to be playing it offline"

"Nah you can't. You [i]need[i] to register it with Steam before you can play it"

"Don't bullshit me"

"I'm not"

"Fuck. What a pile of shit."

Also yesterday/day before i look at my internet activity to find that Steam is downloading something. I don't know what it was downloading, but it was something. Is there anywhere where you can view what steam has downloaded/where it's downloaded things to?

Geeze you people here sure got a short fuse.
I said SOME of the sounds KINDA (translation: a little bit) sound over-the-top. I coulda sworn this was a place to post COMMENTS, thanks for setting me straight cronik.

And then I was saying with all the detail put in it would be cool to explore it deeper like you could if it was an RPG. Thanks again cronik for pointing out I can go play an RPG, I didn't know that.

I think some of the sounds are kinda over-the-top, like the zombies burning (isn't the human part already dead?) and some of the pig like snorting maybe coulda been more alien like.

I think it would have been cool to make an RPG out of Half Life 2 but that's a different story.

If all you can come up with is some petty little complaints about the sounds then it's pretty obvious HL2 isn't going to impress you much.

If you like RPG's then go play an RPG, this is an action shooter and perhaps the best one ever made.

That valve released an even more buggy demo then the full game is a pretty big mistake/miss. There was even a patch for the stuttering in the retail version before this demo right? Why not implement it in the demo before they release it?

They probably want to prepare people for the complete HL2 experience.

I godda agree with Big_B, two guys agaisnt one and you post(or whine about whiners hehe) alot more, so this thread is filled up mostly by you. (Just an observation )

And to keep it on the subject, HL2 wasnt so buggy for me, had just a little stutter here and there. That valve released an even more buggy demo then the full game is a pretty big mistake/miss. Woah I missed a Steam 'discussion!!' With Warhawk and everything!! Man... why did nobody tell me.

I like Steam as a concept. When its on broadband it's well behaved. But I just wish they'd bothered to implement a proper off-line mode. With no time out, no questions asked. I bought the fucking game with money I earned, I registered it like you asked, I don't want it locking me out because I left the computer to compile my map.

The other minor improvement would be to HAVE IT EXIT WHEN I EXIT HALF LIFE 2.

Yep, happened to me on first play through, bit of a pain but still managed to get to the end of the game, have heard it may be a bug associated with jumping into the pods rather than pressing the use key.

Second play through the problem didn't occur fortunately.

Secret text just incase someone sees this as a spoiler...

Did any of you lose the ability to jump in the citadel? I think I need to jump over a small railing to continue, but for some reason I can't jump anymore. I even tried re-binding the keys. I loaded previous saves, but I can only jump in those before I lose my weapons. Maybe the latest update will help..

For a bunch of people complaining about VoodooV's ranting and raving, some of you (warhawk) seem to be doing it quite a bit more than he is. A think a post count in this thread would be intriguing.
Here's a thought, understand that Voodoo is really has a problem with this, but you except it. Fine, move on, but be freakin mature about it.

Your computer being stolen is preventable? Have you or anyone you know ever been robbed? You've never heard of an airline losing luggage? You've never accidentally dropped or scratched a CD in your life?

Everyone knows that you should make at least 3 backup copies of all pieces of software you own, and store at least one of those copies in a safe-deposit box at the bank. Duh.

Ok well I tried the demo and it's pretty neat and I bet multiplayer is a lot of fun too.
But while I was playing i got about 4 stutters that lasted 30 secs to 1 min each, not very fun. Maybe its valve scanning my computer, THANKS A LOT VAVLE
just kidding hahaha

you can't be bothered to make a backup of your CDs?

Sure, if I wanted to, but burned CDs don't last nearly as long as the original (pressed) CDs.

not to mention stupid copy protection schemes that necessitate you to have the CD in the drive at all times in the first place

I guess that is Gabe's doing too, huh? Copy protection is a reality and I have no problem with it, as I buy all my games.

as for work and relatives, guess its just me cuz I actually have a life, but when I work, I work, I don't play games, and when I'm with relatives, I can think of a few more things to do than just playing games, or are your relationships with your family so weak they are based on showing off overhyped games in order to validate yourself?

I said, if you bothered to read, they play during lunch and after work, and the company encourages it.

We visit my wife's relatives, and if one of them wanted to play a bit based on my recommendation, why not download it and check it out? Do you not talk about whatever games you enjoy when around other computer geeks? Everyone here does, hence the reason we post here. I feel sad for you if you cannot share this hobby with friends and family.

*shrug* to each his own, but everything you've described is easily something you could have prevented yourself if you had thought first

Your computer being stolen is preventable? Have you or anyone you know ever been robbed? You've never heard of an airline losing luggage? You've never accidentally dropped or scratched a CD in your life?

since its a requirement it needlessly pisses off the fanbase and hence..less money for Valve

I see you consider yourself the entire "fanbase" now. nin and I and hundreds of thousands of others apparently don't count....

Oh wait, they already thought of that by offering overpriced gold and silver versions

Most folks got the Bronze or the "free" ATI-coupon version of the game. Those that wanted extras paid for them. What's wrong with that?

Valve's rich no matter what you do

No, Valve is rich because they created a great game we all bought and played. They aren't John Romero. The game rocks and is well worth the money, IMHO.
