I love how Doom 3 fanboys use the "It's a sequel to Doom!" excuse to cover up the all the archaic gameplay id thought it would be kewl to add to Doom 3.
Last time I checked; the graphics of Doom 3 weren't rooted in the past. Neither was the storytelling or even the sound. (Well; aside from a few critters). Why the hell should the gameplay be attached to ancient tactics that the entire industry pretty much moved away from in the past 10 years. I mean, hell, I thought the first time I grabbed a shotgun and got sent down a monster elevator that it was a JOKE. Something id added to be funny. Same with the first monster closet and "behind u" teleportation. Instead the entire game turned out to be more of that crap. "It's a sequel to Doom!" is no excuse dude. If your going to release a product in today's market, I expect it to be up to today's standards.
The sad thing is that id is supposed to be a better developer than that. It was especially jarring when they improved upon so many other aspects of the game, yet left crap like that monster closets in.
And if id was trying to make a straight up sequel to Doom; they failed misrably at that too. Gameplay was slow and boring; not fast paced and hectic like it was in the originals. If your going to keep crappy gameplay tactics that went out of style with the 486; you might as well at least TRY to make it a faithful recreation. But no; Doom fans didn't even get that. Instead of either getting a new game based on the original that modern day gamers would like, or a direct recreation of the original on a better graphic engine that oldschool Doomers would like, we all got some sort of crappy hybrid inbetween which doesn't apply to either group.
And as for Doom 3 being "received very well by gamers and critics alike." so was Half-Life 1 and 2. Even more so than Doom3. (50 game of the year award for the original Half-Life, which you describe as "extremly generic and bland") So make up your mind. Either HL1 and 2 were super great games too; or you don't REALLY take stock in the opinions of gamers and critics.
