Gothic III

This JoWooD Press Release (thanks TheMysterD) announces plans for Gothic III, the third edition in Piranha Bytes' RPG series:
Rottenmann, Austria, 14th of December 2004: JoWooD Productions continues its successful cooperation with the German developer Piranha Bytes by publishing one of the most spectacular titles of the coming year: Gothic III, the third part of the legendary RPG saga. "Being listed in all major 'most wanted' charts across Europe, Gothic III is the top title of the coming year. To publish a game with such popularity, potential and quality, is a great chance for us to push a world-wide known brand even further" ,comments Andreas Tobler, CEO of JoWooD Productions Software AG. JoWooD Productions takes this chance and will try to break RPG selling records of the past!

"Our main efforts are to increase quality, atmosphere and fascination in Gothic III, to deliver an unbeatable RPG experience to all the Gothic fans out there. But even with all the improvements and innovations, we continue to build upon the unique concept of the Gothic titles", promises Mike Hoge, developer Piranha Bytes.

In 2002, JoWooD Productions managed to establish Gothic II as known brand in the RPG world. Gothic II dominated the sales charts with weeks at the top and is one of the best-selling titles ever created in German territories. The success is also proven by dozens of awards like "Best RPG 2002", "Best of E3 Show", "Best of Games Convention" and incredible ratings worldwide.

This is one of those games I wish I had a chance to play. The consensus seems to be very good. The only downside is that I tend to like first person RPG's like Morrowind better.

This *is* a first-person RPG - not all that different from Morrowind (in general terms). I highly recommend that you pick yourself up a copy.

When did it become a first person rpg? I only played Gothic 1 and it was most definatly 3rd person.

It wasn't the best game I played, but it's one of the better ones to come out of europe.

I've been close to picking up Gothic II a few times as I've heard good things about it (and criticisms of its somewhat wonky control/fighting scheme). How's this game different from other FPRPGs like Morrowind or Arx Fatalis?

The Gothic series is one of the best RPG series IMHO. However, the problem I have with it is the massively horrible support for gamers in the US. I played to the end of Gothic and could not finish the game because of a bug...going back to a previous save did not help. I'm playing though Gothic II right now, and I notice there is a German patch out...but nothing for the US players. I notice that GII has the same nasty combat and dumb stuff like bad grammar and subtitles that still have the actor instructions in them. GII was distributed by ATARI in the US. One would think they would hold JoWooD accountable to the bring the US game to the same standard as the German version. This whole thing with Gothic pisses me off because of the lack of marketing and support in the US. It's a shame too, because the Gothic series has GREAT atmosphere and it's a game where what you do matters. Gothic has REAL consequences for what you say and do and that's a good thing.

I have not loaded them up yet but I hear great things about both of them so when I am done with Mafia I guess I will have to load up Gothic 1 and get going on this...yes I am a slow gamer as you can tell!

It's one of the best game of 2003 along with the first KOTOR. Add POP:SoT to that list.

As far as I know, there may not be a patch for the english version (yes, there's a word outside the US that also got this version. Surprising, isn't it?) because it was released so long after the original german version that all bugs were fixed by then. The last patch for Gothic2 was out 15.03.03, the 'internationnal' version was out on 06-13-03. In other words, try to make up real complain next time... That lack of 'internationnal' for the expension pack was a let down though.

Can't wait for the third one.

There is a first person mode, its just a lot more playable in 3rd person. The Gothic series has been really impressive, go play it!

I'll also add that G2 has an Expansion out called Night of The Raven and a Mod Kit in German, which have not made their way to the US. And the way Atari's going w/ supporting for US Version of G2, after unfortunately lousy sales, we'll likely never see the expansion.

It's a shame that the expansion was not released in the USA -- even w/ just having subtitles and it was kept it its original language would've been nice. It's good that some fans made a Mod for the actual G2: Night of The Raven (German version) where they translated the game's German audio into English subtitles to pop-up on screen for those who actually will try and buy the German version of G2:NOTR. Though, from what I read, sounds like a hop, skip, and a jump to install the German version of G2:NOTR over the US Version of G2.

So, yeah -- Atari should've marketed G2 better and definitely had better support for the game.

I've finished both G1 and G2. I really liked G1 better, overall -- Gothic 1 was great. G2 had its share of improvements (as well as its share stumbles), but it was not as good & as fresh as G1.

Still, Gothic 2 was a very good game.

I can't wait to see what Pirahna has planned for G3.

Gothic II was great, so I'm very much looking forward to this one Hopefully they've done some work on the control scheme (took some time to get used to it, it could be streamlined some more). I think many people stopped playing the game before they could get used to the (somewhat awkward) controls

I finished the first Gothic (US version) without any problems. I never patched the game or anything. Just played the version that came in the box.

Never got a chance to play Gothic II, but I heard lots of good things about the game.

Yeah, I played G1 and G2 as they were, out the box -- since there were no USA/English Patches out there, even when I looked all over the Net.

I did hit a roadblock w/ G2, where I had to jump back like 2 or 3 saves b/c a key character died who I needed to talk to, for actually finishing one of the main quests -- at least in Morrowind, they let you know that "A key character died, so keep playing in this broken world or reload to a save before this character's death so you can finish the main quest."

Some other silly mistakes too, like certain quests didn't update as finished in my Journal Log when I finished them.

Still a good RPG. At least I never had any saves corrupt or data corruption or anything, like some other games have done to people in the past.

Gothic III is easily the number one game on my most wanted games list. Has been for quite a while. Even Half-Life 2 was on the second spot.

I first got to know Gothic by playing the english demo in 2001. I was simply blow away by it. Then I bought the english version of Gothic as soon as it was released and found out that it was the best 3rd person action/adventure/RPG game that I had ever played. Then in 2003 the english version of Gothic II was released and it was as good as the original, if not better (can't really say because I love both games so much).

The Gothic games are awesome singleplayer experiences with a good continuing story. Only Outcast can somewhat compete with the Gothic series.

I never got into Gothic 1 or 2 because the graphics are poorly done (models, textures, etc). You definitely get the impression its a big, open-ended game, but I just couldn't enjoy the game (the controls in both games were also god-awful).

I'm more of a Morrowind man, and as such, more of an Oblivion man. Morrowind was better than Gothic 2, and I'm guessin Oblivion will pwn Gothic 3 (my 2 cents).

Maybe this time they can make the controls less cumbersome and unintuitive and work on the polish of the game before releasing it.
