Doom 3[CC]

The first full version of the Doom 3[CC] modification is now available. Here is how this project is described: "Doom3[CC] is a mod that aims to close caption Doom3 so that hard of hearing and deaf gamers can enjoy Doom3 without missing the important plot details, enemy sound clues and intense atmosphere created audibly. This mod is also helpful for those who wish to learn the English language by reading what the spoken dialog says. This first initial release is an early version and while not 100% complete does provide captions for dialog, monsters and environmental ambience. Future versions will support color coding based on who is speaking and additional languages for the captions."

It wouldn't be hard for the developer to type up the captions-- they would have scripts from the recording sessions. Copy and paste.

I don't remember ever seeing a mono option, to be honest. Playing with speakers is fine, but using headphones I can have a few problems with games that have very direction-specific sound. It's not a really big deal, though. I noticed it a bit with the voices in Vampire, but I can pretty easily just turn my character so that the voice is coming from a more useful direction. Which I have to do in real life sometimes, anyway.

...but does make it slightly more difficult.

Just out of pure human curiosity...hearing out of only one ear, if a game has a Mono setting do you choose that setting when you play?

And being the way technology is, there aren't alot of games that offer Mono as an option. Do you wish they did, or does having Stereo as the most basic option matter to you?

That's exactly what I found during development of this mod. Writing the captions took longer than coding the captioning system.

I think with the proper hooks in place, it'd be very simple to add closed captioning to any game, the hardest part woudl be writing the captions.

Yeah, it is cool. Even if Doom 3 was a pretty boring game, at least people with hearing disabilities can now judge it for themselves. I'm personally deaf in one ear, which doesn't stop me hearing game sounds altogether, but does make it slightly more difficult. I really don't think there's an excuse for game companies not putting captions in their games. For a game like Doom 3, it would hardly be a massive undertaking.

I think this sort of an effort is outstanding. I don't have any disabilities myself (except for red-green colour blindness, which is trivial), but anything that allows those with disabilities to [better] enjoy games is terrific. Kudos to the Doom 3[CC] team!! Hopefully this sort of thing will be implemented by developers more often in the future.

You missed the Game Options menu then, we added the ability to caption SFX and/or dialog via "YES/NO" options.

SFX [YES/NO]
DIALOGUE [YES/NO]

Choosing yes to both captions everything

Choosing NO to SFX but YES to dialog gets what you're looking for.

Hope that helps. Is there some way we can make that more apparent so others don't miss it?

I know, they're such complete nerds for selflessly working to allow people to enjoy the game. What a bunch of losers.
I was pleasantly surprised to find HL2 had subs. I dont need them, but I can't imagine it's a massive undertaking and it makes a big difference to some.
