It reminds me of being in 4th grade and arguing about who had the most GI Joes and why Skeletor could kill HE-Man but never would.

Bah, Optimus Prime could kick GGI Joe, Skeletor and HE-man collective asses all at the same time.

Nuff’ said you pansy.

nin, that was brilliant.

Ahhh, King of Chicago, I have such fond memories of that game. First ever game, IIRC, to incorporate different methods of advancing to the next "chapter". And first ever game to allow you to buy your way out of death row. Just squeeze those hookers for some more cash.

GI Joe was a failure. They never stopped the terrorist threat known as Cobra. They kept taking that government funding, and buying all kinds of crazy new weapons, but they never could stop the bad guys.

That was my problem with all action figures. And a lot of non-action ones too - do Barbie / the Bratz / Sindi et al really nead a car, a beach house, a party van, etc? It seemed to me that the more she bought, the unhappier she got, but where was the psychiatrist model* to help her out? And as for action man.... every xmas he got something new and improved - a commanche, a dune buggy, and every xmas Dr. X came back with something else and wasn't dead, so AM couldn't return home to (my sister's) Barbie.

It may have something to do with the rubber missiles. And his HMMWV almost certainly ain't armoured.

Figures a dick like you would say that!!! GI Joe would just cap their fat homoerotic asses!

Alright, now I gotta jump in here...

Dude, GI Joe couldn't shoot shit! Remember all those battles w/ Cobra? All those lasers going back and forth?! And NOBODY died. Hell, nobody even got SHOT.

Every episode was the damn same: There's be a big shootout at the end, with lasers going back and forth, and Cobra would finally get bored and go home.

GI Joe was a failure. They never stopped the terrorist threat known as Cobra. They kept taking that government funding, and buying all kinds of crazy new weapons, but they never could stop the bad guys. That whole "fictional" $42 toilet seat you always hear about when people talk about government spending? It wasn't fictional at all. According to Scarlet, it was in Duke's private latrine! (How she knew that, I don't want to know. It'd break Snake Eyes' heart anyway.) Speaking of which, Snake Eyes was the only badass in the whole group damn group...

And you know why Cobra was never stopped by GI Joe? Because they were sneaky bastards. Hell, they even had a rock band!

And do you know why Destro and Cobra Commander never got caught? Because they wore masks. A mask is handy. That means you can be a terrorist Monday through Friday, but then on the weekend, if you wanna go to Wal-Mart and pick up some groceries, shop at the mall, or stop at Sonic for a drink, all you had to do was NOT wear your damn mask out in public. As long as they didn't wear their masks, CC or Destro could go through the Burger King drive-thru WITH NO PROBLEMS. It'd be like:

CC: Yesss. I need a number two combo with a biggie side of friesssssss.

Drive-thru attendant: That's an number two combo with biggie fries?

CC: Yesssss.

DTA: Your voice kinda sounds familiar. Do you drive through here often, or perhaps lead a vile terrorist organization, bent on taking over the world?

CC: Er...no.

DTA: OK. Your total's $5.42, please pull around to the first window.

And that's why GI Joes sucks.

Alright...rant over.

The problem is that, just as you said, B&W was over-rated. Everyone (practically) rated it highly when it came out, including gamers, because it just seemed so new and cool when you first started playing.

9.3 is a bad score, but the scores were pretty bad across the board on that game.

No, you don't need more evidence. But here is some:

Black and White - 9.3

For me it's basically what has been stated before. When a big name game comes out it seems like they try too hard to find points against it so they can seem unbiased. If it's a new game or one that sort of comes out of nowhere, they feel more free to give it the score they really want because no one would accuse them of being biased towards such a small publisher, value priced games, etc. It's just safer for them.

It's safer to not rave over the 'big event' games and champion the more unheard of titles?

Keep drinking, buddy;P You've made the most sense so far and I'm completely sober.... sadly....

I think it will always come down to personal prefs, either way. I've only just finished HL2 and I thought it was exceptionally good.... but best game ever? Not for me. I think Gabe's idea of doing a whole game around Alyx and Dog has a lot going for it, actually....

Also, when I fire my last RPG I have it doesn't seek. Or didn't. I haven't seen if the new patch fixes this...
It should - it claims to on the Steam site.

Deus Ex - 8.2

Do I really need anymore evidence...I think not.

Y'know (and be aware that I am well into the single-malt by now)..

I'm sitting here thinking about that score, and I have to say that I feel the only sane way to interpret those kind of blanket grades fairly is to wipe the slate clean every year (this opinion is partly based on my hellish experience of teaching 4 semesters of grade 12 Visual Arts Photography. 'Hellish' because of the marking, not the teaching; it's not_possible to 'grade' art fairly without imposing some very strict parameters. Even then I'm not sure it's right.. Never sat well with me, anyway).

This way, you're not comparing this year's 8.2 with the 8.2 of 1994.. Afterall, game devs are also gamers, and it only stands to reason that they're going to build on the greatness of games-gone-by with their new efforts.

Therefore, if you're going to say that 8.2 = 8.2 no matter the era, you need to penalize the games which have had the benefit of hindsight more severely -- meaning it becomes increasingly difficult to achieve 8.2, or the comparison is meaningless; a game that scored 94.7% five years ago is going to seem somewhat quaint in many respects compared to the 96.4% heavyweights of today, even though both scores might have been completely on the mark at the time (HL1 vs. HL2 for those who are wondering)..

If you limit your sample size to games released in the same year, then suddenly the scores become meaningful in relation to one another and comparisons between them become much more valid.

I mean, King of Chicago was an amazing game when it was released, and at the time easily one of the best looking (on the Amiga, at least), but does anyone really think scoring it 0.2% lower than HL2 makes sense anymore?

http://www.freeoldies.com/review.php3?game=King+of+chicago

I hope not -- it's semi-stylish shit (at best) if you play it now.

Oh, who the hell am I kidding?

Half-Life 2?

The Chronicles of Riddick?

Puh-lease, it is all about World of Warcraft.
Even with HL2 and Halo 2 done; I still have four games to start.

I think you might need to say more. I'm not sure if you think that score was too low or too high. Deus Ex was a great game, and still one of my all-time favorites. But it did ship with some bugginess that had to be patched, so I really don't know which way you're leaning on that one.

agreed, Riddick is great fun. Better than HL2 IMO, thanks to the narrative. Just started playing yesterday. Amazing graphics, it's like Doom 3 but done RIGHT. Only gripe with Riddick is the head bobbing that can't be disabled, apparently. Makes me motion sick!

Thats where we will see the future, the mod guys are the future wave in gameing and the best kept secret. So i look to those guys to further the HL2 experience, just look at some of the mods based on the old HL1 engine and you can only imagine what these guys & gals will do in the next 6 or so months with the source engine. to get a glimpse check out Unatural Selection or any of the zillion mods out for HL1 and youll see what i mean. peace.. and dont ever talk bad about HL2 agian lol

Sleeper titles of 2005- NEXUS-The jupiter project. Armies of Exigo. BattleMages. Parkan. and hopefully E L I T E 4 heh wow not a WW2 themed title in the bunch. who need more FPS with HL2 and the mod community i dont have to buy another FPS till 2007.

Most of you wont even know what Battlemages or Parkan even is unless they decide to release them here in the States, I heard Nexus is comming so im glad for that but most of the ppl in America just like flash without substance Guns without meaning and sex with viagra. we are turning into a push button lazy over weight society, pretty soon we will have home robots <no joke> to further give us a reason to sit on the Lard, where have we gone wrong i ask? WTF happened to all the smart skiny ppl? Why do i have to hear Jz on the radio a zillion times a day talking about how he got shot? thats one not too brite rapper with not even a cool rap voice and 0 content? but America loves it.
hehe i remember the Real rappers like Rok kim or even Public enemy or try KRS one. they had a meaning. LOL god i love this country.
