I got a spam in the nature of the Nigerian scams that purported to be from Mrs. Yassir Arafat... I thought this demonstrated well enough that these things have jumped the shark, but that was before I came to the end of the letter directing further inquiries to the law firm of Batman & Associates... if Barrister Batman is handling the case, maybe there's some legitimacy to all this?

assuming all vertical planes involved are kept parallel and the following takes place in a perfect universe, I'm imagining a line shooting out of my eyeball, straight down the centre of the projector lens, and onto the exact centre of the screen is optimal.. is that right (does it even make sense)?

It is just like a movie theater. Though, since it probably will not be that big the affects will not be to such a large degree. The critical part (and possibly what Z was talking about?) is having the projector hit the wall/screen straight on at.

and I'd like to track one down for a test if I can..

Good luck with that!
Where do you live? If it is a decent size city, odds are you will have a local A/V store with displays and such…maybe….better start calling some people!

*edit*
One thing I would mention, the one I got does not have it, but it really is a nice feature and I wish I had it (and read more and got one with it). Is optical zoom, so the “size” of the screen is not totally limited to how far back the projector is. In my case, the room I put it in for watching movies, everything turned out to fit just perfect.

My bios keeps reading my processor 400 MHz too slow and I can't install my drivers for my soundcard.
Have you had any power issues lately? Was anything overclocked before? How's the temperature of the room and the components inside the case? Try running CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) and see what it says about your processor... whether it matches what your BIOS is reporting. It should, of course.

As for the sound card, does Windows even recognize that there is one in the system? Is it on-board the mobo or a separate card? Maybe the file for the drivers you d/led is just corrupted. Have you tried re-d/ling them?

That's all I've got at 5am, sorry.

Awesome -- thanks for all the helpful thoughts on projectors, guys! I always find it's easiest to begin researching hair-brained schemes like this once a couple of people who know better have given me a friendly shove in the right direction..

I bought this projector a few months back.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/proj_2200mp?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Enahs - I'm wondering if it's obvious at all whose projector Dell has re-branded there? It certainly sounds like you're happy with it, and I'd like to track one down for a test if I can.. I had pretty much thought there wouldn't be a point in getting something with a below HD native-res, but if you're saying it's better than your RP HD TV (for VIPs), I'm definitely curious. Cheap bulbs = good too

Personally, if I was going to buy a projector right now, I would go for the Panasonic AE700U. It's a 1280x720 projector (genuine 720p HDTV) and it gets pretty good reviews; its one of those new LCD's without the screendoor effect. It's selling for $2200 right now.

Fang - my mistake, that's the one I was thinking about. It's ugly on the outside, but by the reviews I've seen, it certainly seems to be the price/performance winner on the inside.. almost verges on to-good-to-be-true territory given that other similar products seem to be closer to the $10K mark (US too -- I'm shopping in CDN$)... I do like that it does real 720p though, and as you say, the price puts it about even with a high-end TV. Have you seen one in person? I'm a HW-review junkie, but I still think word of mouth is better..

A couple bits of advice you're likely to get are that you're going to want to black out or nearly blackout whatever room the projector is in. That's often a lot harder to do in a loft.

Actually, the nice thing about this place in that regard is that there is only one window to deal with. Granted it is 10' high and 19' across, but at least I'm not on a corner or something.. oh wait, that would be awesome I like it dark when I'm sleeping though, so serious draperies are already in the works..

Also, while thinking about using the loft as a balcony is a wonderful fantasy, realize that the picture and sound are going to be utter crap from up there. Very few projection technologies do well with deeply off z-axis viewing, and while LCD probably isn't the worst (I'd guess that goes to DLP), it's not going to be good either. Your sound quality is going to be pretty poor in a loft no matter what, but being that far off the z-axis for the center and front speakers is going to make it that much worse.

Yeah, thanks for mentioning that. The balcony is now closed I don't plan to have a separate set of speakers for this thing, and the one's I do have are definitely going to go downstairs, so that's that, as they say in France.

Curious about the off z-axis issues you mention though, since I definitely don't want utter crap -- assuming all vertical planes involved are kept parallel and the following takes place in a perfect universe, I'm imagining a line shooting out of my eyeball, straight down the centre of the projector lens, and onto the exact centre of the screen is optimal.. is that right (does it even make sense)?

One of you bums want to help me out? I got a corrupt download on my hard drive here and it won't let me delete it with its "program in use" crap error. Reset doesn't change anything. I can't get to DOS because XP doesn't even have DOS, and I tried using the MSDOS boot disk but it won't recognize my hard drive presumably because it's NTFS.

Help!

Try move on boot. It fixed that problem for me. I'd post a link, but such things are beyond me. Should be first in a google search.

Edit: Assuming nin's easier method doesn't work.

Oh, and forget using the terms 'crisp' and '144"' in the same sentence unless you're also willing to plunk down about $30k on the projector. You're more likely to be in the 80" range as a maximum. Probably a bit smaller if you want good brightness and a crisp display.

We are talking inches right?

As mine is bright and crisp on a 105" screen (on the diagonal and widescreen). And it is only a 1200 ANSI lumens and 1700:1 contrast ration, the more expensive ones are double or more than that.

But as you said, the darker the better, and I can get the room pretty damn dark, even in the day; nothing like shades, blinds and dark three layer curtains all together (note, I did not do that my self, that was just how it was when I moved in). I suspect from using it and knowing it I can go about ~15% bigger without any video degradation….I just can not get the projector back for enough to try for any bigger (it is already sitting about 18 ft away).

Again, I can not stress enough how great it looks, even though the native resolution is 800x600, and I am comparing to high quality computer monitors and high quality hi-def TV’s. I originally got mine not for movies and such, but for presentations, but I tried DVD’s and HI-def TV on it once, and it was amazing.

I highly recommend anyone even remotely considering them find some local store (it won’t be a national chain) with a show room showing off the different LCD projectors and such, as you might find your self presently surprised with the quality for the price.

Note: If you want the screen big, the projector has to be a good distance away from the screen. And the “sitting” area needs to be at least half the distance from the screen to the projector as a minimum (general rules).

Plus, just turning them on and just shining the incredible pure white bright light is a damn good way to blind people!

Anyone have any tips on Crew Morale?

Nonstop pillaging. The best way to keep your people happy is to have a continuous flow of money coming in from looting ships and sacking towns. Sail down the coast attacking every ship and every town you can defeat and they'll be happy for a long while. Take a break by sailing for months across the sea and they'll become unhappy.

No matter what, they'll become unhappy eventually. It's unavoidable. Large crews get unhappier faster (probably because they get less loot per person), so feel free to thin out your ranks in combat every once in a while.
