Out of the Blue

I just need to vent a little here. I ruined a keyboard with a coffee spill yesterday, and contrary to the logic that might suggest a cheap replacement was in order for an item that had suffered such a carelessness-related demise, I picked up a fancy Microsoft wireless desktop as a replacement. Now I am suffering with a couple of inconveniences using it, because they have decided that the small array of keys above the arrow keys (home, insert, etc.) needed rearranging. Specifically, the six keys are now five, and instead of being two rows and three columns, the keys are now in two columns, with the insert key removed from the mix and placed on the top row to share a key with PrtScrn and SysRq (talk about marginalized -- I guess some folks find accidentally hitting Insert as welcome as the Caps Lock). This all completely messes with my instinctive use of all these keys, and why? Because they decided the delete key needed to be twice as tall as it was for some reason. Also, the 12 function keys that are traditionally laid out in three groups of four are now four groups of three. WTF?

Nothing like a little change for change's sake. Too bad, because the keyboard has the nicest action I've ever used... but I still may have to return this. We shall see.

I guess today marks the true start of the holiday season, as the Festival of Lights begins tonight at sundown. Happy Chanukah!

Yeah...I've been living the same issue.

The functions keys rearrangement I can live with - but not the 6 keys on top of the arrow keys. WTF indeed!

Haven't gone wireless yet - I have the original Microsoft Keyboard Internet elite or something at home. Love it.

At work though, with the new laptop, I have to use a new USB keyboard that has the 6 keys laid out wrong (2 columns of 3 keys) - that screws me up big time, especially since I'm used to Shift-Del/Shift-Ins for the Copy/Paste (old Wordstar user)...

I have a similar problem w/ my logitech keyboard. Above the standard letters, I have (in addition to other buttons) a volume up and volume down buttons, and to the right, a mute button. This is very handy to use if, in the middle of a firefight, the volume is not to your liking.

The problem is w/ HL2. When I hit the volume down button, Gordon ducks. And when I hit the mute button (to unmute the audio, to hear the game), Gordon strafes to the right...

Wow, what amazingly inane changes to a keyboard layout. Have you considered looking at the Logitech or Kensington wireless keyboards?

As far as action goes, I don't think anything will beat the classic IBM keyboard (true buckling spring design; still available at http://www.pckeyboard.com -- the wireless version looks like crap though).

Oh, and Blue, the wording on the last sentence is rather awkward. "...as the Festival of Lights begins tonight, as Chanukah...". Made me feel like I was reading something I wrote, and you're better than that Blue!

Bah. That's recent crap.

Well... not really. I mostly use vim nowadays. And Word or OpenOffice for documents. And I'll spare everyone from attempting to relate vi commands...

LOL - man, THAT brings back old memories...I've forgotten most of those though - but never got out of the Shift-Del/Shift-Ins to get the "Copy" part, and then Shift-Ins again to paste it...

But if you didn't like the layout, why on earth did you buy it?

I'm betting it's one of those where you don't realize how f$%*ed up it is until you start using it...

I'm still using a keyboard that has no windows key.

Love the Windows key...was annoying at first, but when you get used to all the commands (Win-R, Win-E, Win-M, ...), it's pretty useful.

But if you didn't like the layout, why on earth did you buy it?

He probably didn't know to look for that...I know quite a few who didn't realized the re-arrangement of those keys and were stuck with a new keyboard that they hate.

Do you have the drivers installed for your keyboard? They should be intercepting the "special" keystrokes first. Of course, with DirectX and DirectPlay all bets are off.

Re: the Matrix link. Now we know why the W bros, aren't doing commentary on the dvd set due out today (self incrimination)?

Sheer embarassment over the last two films maybe?

It's difficult to find any coverage of this story. Google News comes up with no hits at all. A general Google search for "Sophia Stewart terminator" comes up with stuff, but it's mostly on daghettotymz.com (either her site or heavily supportive of her; reads like ass anyway) and various Matrix fan sites. The article doesn't explain why she's getting Terminator royalties though.

As far as Google News goes, this is effectively a two month old story. I don't think GN archives very much. But it should still be in far more print than it is... and it damn well should've made the headlines when it happened. This is the kind of crap we're getting into with the media consolidation. I'm unsurprised (but still disappointed) by a conglomerate not reporting on itself... but when the other conglomerates also don't run the story... well, it makes me think I should be wearing a tinfoil hat.

Years ago, when I did tech support in the dialup only world, and quake1 was the shiznit...(and doom2 was still the shiznit), I cube mated with a guy who used the MS natural KB. I swore I would never let MS alter my bodily habits(and I wasn't an MS hater). I would stick to my straight LOUD clicking KB. It was the clicking after that helped me to learn to type. One day I realized the keys never moved around on the KB, so I stopped looking and started listening. Anyway... I was forced to use the MS KB one week, as someone had grabbed mine. Now I have 5 of them at home, provided my own at work, and can't type on the little server tray keyboards we have in server rooms now. weird huh

Hey Blue. I'm wondering, is that keyboard also one of Microsoft's keyboards where the Function Keys only work if you hit F-Lock or have they reversed that goofy decision?

Nope, you still need the F-lock. I'm learning to deal with it. But yes it's definitely annoying. Moreover, for some odd reason, you can't take a screen cap using Alt-PrintScrn without disabling F-lock. Really silly. I'm not sure what the two have to do with each other, perhaps inconvenience for inconvenience's sake.

I got used to the layout pretty quick but the thing that got me was the 'F-lock' modifier. So, your F keys don't do what you expect (F2 = rename for example) until you turn this lock key on.

Was driving me absolutely nuts until I stumbled on a registry fix by some guy. It flips these keys' values at load up so - without having to press the f-lock key - they do what you expect from boot.

Here's the link - made me a mucho happier man

I have the Wireless Desktop Elite and, after awhile, you get used to it. Your right about key action, it's pretty hard to beat. The whole thing as a good feel about it...

But the 'F Lock' key.... they need to shoot whoever had the idea for that! I know it gives double access to the function keys, but the amount of times I've hit F11 and gotten nowhere.... it's just not funny!

Edit: When I wrote this, there was no mention yet of the 'F Lock' key... and during my posting, it seems the whole world has the same problem;P That should tell you something, Microsoft....

The last keyboard I bought also has rearranged the group of six keys above the keypad.
It sucks too; I liked the old three columns instead of two. But I got use to it. Though, mine has all six there, not just five.

But what really sucks is the actual keypad has been changed (if you play any old games, it is important!). Old style was: Left, Down, Right all on one row, with Up one row above the down button. New style has Left and Right together touching, Up above them in middle, and Down below in middle.

It sucks. It is now so cramped.

But, it also has 15 programmable buttons above the function keys, mute and volume up and down are so freakin nice in games!

Its infamy pales in comparison to the evils being visited upon keyboards nowadays.

Thanks for the reminder. Seriously.
