Steam Updates

Steam News (thanks Frans) has word that Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Source SDK, and Source Engine updates are now available. The updates offer enhanced support for HL2 DM, DM map making, and fixed administrative functions for server operators.

You're going to have most of the game content (models, textures) on the "development" PC anyway.
Unless Valve has finally opened up and included a utility to extract and create GCF files then no, the game content doesn't need to be on the development PC and in fact, couldn't be used even if it were. That has been the problem with the Steam version of Half-Life and Counterstrike for over a year. Valve has provided absolutely no tools to make use of the content such as textures and models in the Steam versions of Half-Life and Counterstrike due to all of the content being protected away in proprietary GCF files. Yes, one guy did reverse engineer the GCF format more or less so that this content could be extracted and used but it certainly was not with Valve's blessing. So, if all a person had were the Steam versions of Valve's games, they would not be able to create maps which use the game's existing textures.

"monthly fee"

How would that work with older copies of Half life? I cant see them being able to charge for HL/CS(1) surely that must be voiding some kind of EULA?
The Steam EULA allows Valve to change the terms at any time for any reason.

And it isnt like any more patches come out for HL1 is it.
Yes, but the current STEAM version of Half-Life only works if authenticated by Steam. The old version of Half-Life no longer functions for online play because the WON CD key authentication system is gone.

I just cant see the pay monthly thing working for HL
I can. Valve already has the system in place and everyone converted to Steam, so all it needs to do is simply flip a switch (metaphorically speaking).

Oh good grief: why does everyone have to be so difficult?
Valve is the one who has made obtaining the SDK difficult, not me. Mirrors make it easy. Restricting access to it via Steam and purchase only makes it hard.

It's not like seeing it coming makes you a visionary....

Gabe and others at Valve have stated it's something they wanted to do and will probably pursue.

HL2 probably has some convoluted thing in there somewhere. I just cant see the pay monthly thing working for HL

If you own the game then you can install it on both computers. Not at all difficult.

You're going to have most of the game content (models, textures) on the "development" PC anyway..

It's quite common to have a 'developement' PC with all of your tools that isn't hooked up to the outside world and a dedicated Game PC that you test on. That's what I do. What's so difficult about that?

"Is it possible to download the SDK without having Steam or at least without having Half-Life 2? I would like to checkout the SDK even though I don't have the game, and with other games with SDK's, this has never been an issue. If not, add to the many shortcomings of Steam that there are no thrid-party mirrors for patches and addons like these."

Oh good grief: why does everyone have to be so difficult?

Yeah, you can render created maps without the game, but unless you get some chance to play test it you're going to end up with one buggy arse map.

Bottom line, if you want to mod a game it's a good idea to buy it..

How could you test the software you create if you don't have the game?
Have others test it. Most game editors render the created maps, models, textures, and other content without needing the game to see what it looks like.

The SDK wouldn't be much use without the game.
Sure it would. It would be sufficient to learn the editor and create maps and other content without having the game on the same PC.

Hey thanks man!! Makes me smile that someone remembers that game, much less any of the mod stuff that we did for it. I had a lot of fun making maps & tilesets for that.
I played TA not too long ago and I just gotta say that it's still just as fun today as it was years ago. And graphically it can still hold it's own for an RTS game.

As far as developing for HL2, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibilities...currently most of the guys are working on their 1942 stuff...and I have kind of ventured off on my own and have been working independantly on the Merciless mod for Call of Duty. ( http://www.mercilessmod.com is the website for the call of duty mod)

I think the HL2 community will bring a lot of awesome talent out of the woodwork , and I hope that if we decide to delve into the Source engine and creat a HL2 mod , that we can make a high-quality product that won't get lost in the shuffle of the 1000's of other mods that will surely be developed.

Thanks for the feedback regarding my sound issue...looks like it's time to retire this tired old Audigy card. I have an M-Audio Revlation card that was sent to me, so i'm going to load that up and hopefully the problem will go away.

Hey Chris/CAP -

You guys planning on doing any HL2 mods. I still enjoy some of your work with Total Annihilation. Man that was a freaking fun game, still fire it up sometimes and play - brings back some memories.

It's unrelated. The sound stuttering happens when the game loads up new textures as you round a corner or load a new section, and the sound loops during this like a broken record. I've had the issue you're talking about (with other games, when I had a Creative card) but dont know if there's a fix for it.

I am not quite sure what the sound 'stuttering' problem is, but I have a problem where it sounds like it's been eating rice crispies for breakfast. I get lots of snaps, crackles & pops...but it onlyl seems to happen in certain environments, like sewers and stuff where there is lots of reverb & echo stuff going on.

is this the "stutter" problem? or is this something entirely unrelated? Just curious..
I have a Creative Audigy with the latest & greatest drivers and am running WinXP w/SP2.

Thanks!

you really don't need third party mirrors in Steams case
LOL! Tell that to people who can't download when Steam gets overloaded like it does with every big release like this.

In addition, mirrors are needed so that the SDK could be downloaded if the game is not installed.

think of it as an MMOG
in more ways than one. I think I see that monthly fee on the horizon.
