Half-Life 2 DM Notes

Steam News discusses the toilet flinging that's begun now that Half-Life 2 deathmatch is now available. The update also describes a problem the update caused for DirectX users on RAM-limited systems that has since been fixed, word that a small Half-Life 2 dedicated server release is in the works to improve weapon respawn behavior, and a reminder about their HL2DM map contest.

Use the HiJack crack. It bypasses CD prot.

Doing this would be incredibly stupid. Valve will eventually detect you're doing this, and add your steam account and cd key to the 20,000 accounts its already banned. Throw away your 50 bucks but don't tell other people to do it.

A note to anybody who hates using the CD/DVD
Use the HiJack crack. It bypasses CD prot.

However, you will still need a valid Steam account.
It will work for CS:Src

You cannot play without a CD if you download Retail through Steam.

I just remember everyone complaining about the potential for Steam's patcher to mess up everyone's game. And I also remember me arguing the very nature of Steam allows Valve to quick fix such issues.

<Notes that the issue was resolved via Steam less than a few hours after the release>

I played for about half an hour tonight. It took several tries to find a lag free server, but it was pretty fun. I don't know what I'm doing wrong I can't seem to kill anyone by launching stuff with the gravity gun.

I picked up a file cabinet and threw it at one guy, it literally bounced off his head, he then picked up a wooden bench and threw it at me and it cut me in half.

I do love it when someone picks up an exploding barrel though.

BUT I stll don't like having to keep my DVD in the drive while all the people who bought the game through STEAM don't have to worry about that!

Then download it through steam. I bought it through steam, but I've seen posts in other forums that say you can uninstall your game, then click the button in steam to register a product you already own. Enter your CD key and it will download over steam. Then you can play without a CD/DVD in the drive.

RAM limit: bullshit. I don't have 1.3 Gig, but I've got 512Mb, and that's enough -- according to the box. DX7? Hmmm. I've got DX9.0c.

1. That box is HL 2 singleplayer, HL 2 DM could very well be more demanding..

2. I'm not sure you understand one thing: Your card (most likely) does not support DX 9 (I'm assuming this, because you have less than a gig of ram). Even though you have downloaded and are using DX 9, your card is still only capable of DX 7 (or 8) level instructions.

3. Software releases are buggy, get used to it or get a console. Valve COULD have spent more time testing it, but that would have meant a later release. So in Valve's eyes, you release it even though a *few* people can't play it so the *majority* can have their fun.

Even though there are only two maps, I'm having a blast with this. Definately some of the best DM (due mainly to the gravity gun) to come out in recent memory. Too bad they didn't put the ant lions in, would have been like snarks on steroids..

Re #4: I know what you say about potential damage, but I wonder how hard it is to actually scratch a CD to the point that it doesn't work. I once carried around my Mechwarrior 3 CD in a backback hoping it would get scratched beyond use so that I would stop playing (Long story). It never did. Also, my 5-year old son and I have been handling our Warcraft and Frozen Throne CDs for years now, and they still work just fine. And trust me, he ain't gentle with it.

I lent a friend or so called friend a PS2 game. When I finally got it back I checked the bottom like anyone would. It was so scratched up it looked like someone dropped it on cement and then twisted it into the ground with their foot. It couldn't get past the intro video without locking up.

I made the guy pay for it of course. But sheesh, how careless and disrespectful do you have to be to get it that bad, especially knowing your borrowing it. I think he also lent it to a friend of his, but still. If you saw the disc (2 weeks old when he borrowed it) you'd be like "OMG"

So why couldn't I play Half-Life 2 last night again?

I'm havin' a blast with DM! I'm so glad this game finally has it! Now HL2 is truly complete. Good Job Valve. I hate Steam but its cool to see how conveinent it installed and quickly I was playing it... I guess the service isn't that bad when it actually works. BUT I stll don't like having to keep my DVD in the drive while all the people who bought the game through STEAM don't have to worry about that! I really hope they patch it so no CD is required. I hate handling the disc soo much 'cause more handling = potential damage.

It actually has to do with people running Direct X7.

Which if you are running that, you probably aren't playing other newer games.....so maybe it is I who doesn't understand the issue.
