At least PainKiller took some skills to finish at Trauma difficulty in the Forest level. More than I can really say for any level in HL2 at Hard.

Come on take this shit outta this topic.

And KOTOR was the worst of Bioware's RPGS.

Yes, it's VERY good. Here's one of the best moders for it...

Damn! I didn't know there were mods for KOTOR?! WTF?!

Thanks for the link!

KOTOR uses a modified Neverwinter Night's engine. Same with the second one.

But you should play through it in it's original form first time through.

I agree about some of Painkiller's levels being very atmospheric.

Just what's so great about this game? The graphics are clearly inferior to Far Cry, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and the single player is far worse than either of those 3 as well.

you either like it or you don't. As far as the graphics, no, they don't have lots of "pretty shineys" (DX9) FX everywhere but the art direction is superior to any of those games you mentioned (yes, ALL of them). The game has more of a Quake/Doom feel than even iD's own latest.

Lets see, what else.... clever level design, amazing boss fights, some of the most original looking/functioning weapons I've can remember seeing in a long, long time.

All of it means nothing if you aren't enamored with basic old-school shooter style gameplay to begin with though.

Was KOTOR any good? That was one of those games that I always wanted to pick up and never did. I'm a huge Star Wars fan too. What engine is KOTOR 2 using?

Go buy it. NOW. I'm not even a big Star Wars fan and I loved it. It's got a fair amount of replayability too, I must've played through the whole game 7 or 8 times usings different builds, light/dark, etc. As for engine, I think it's using it's own (the PC game is actually a VERY well done port of the xbox game)

I'm trying to resist the urge to buy an Xbox for KotOR2, must wait for port.

Just so I'm not completely off-topic. I had tried the demo for Painkiller but just couldn't get into it. There's nothing I dont' like about it, it's just that if I want some mindless killing I'd rather load up SS:TSE.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

What's great about it is it's simple fun. You get in, you kill shit, you move on. It doesn't pretend to be special, but it is fun.

Clearly inferior? Bit of an exaggeration.

  • It came out before HL2 and Doom 3 so generated a fanbase as it looked pretty damn good at the time.

  • stake gun is great great fun
  • i

    • great use of ragdoll/physics pre HL2

    • It does what none of those others do, enemy hordes attacking you en masse

    • certain levels ooze atmosphere, and are very varied, unlike Doom for example

It does have rubbish puzzle bosses though

Well, it depends on who you are. This game usually goes for a different crowd. After a hard day of work you can give your brain a rest and shoot around like mad.

1998 and 2004 go down as great PC gaming years... Looks like 2005 is a bit thin on the ground however
