Exactly. I set ALL my games in the list that way. Then, when a patch comes out, I wait about 2-3 days before getting it, to make sure it doesn't hose anything...

Thanks! As they say, 'If it was a snake it woulda bit me'.

My next question: will this stop HL2 from "validating" every few launches?

In fact, I'm writing this as Steam chugs away validating my HL2 files for the gozillionth time. I just wanna play. Why, dear God, has Valve made it so hard for me to *just play*!

(First, I log into Steam, then verify my files every 5th launch, then start the game, then load the 3D menu)

Is it just me or does HL2 take forever to get you into the game? Elapsed time too play (with verify/without verify): 5+min/1:45*

*without skipping the Valve Splash Screen

I created a new account (Road Runner Cable Internet)

Here is my very un-scientific download progress with updates:

4 hours 14 minutes: Finished and was able to start up HL2 and Counter-Strike Source.

3.87 GB
260.5 kB/sec

On the 4 hour mark:
3.78 GB
274.8 kB/sec

On the 3 hour mark:
3.07 GB
296.6 kB/sec

On the 2 hour mark:
2.22 GB
319.6 kB/sec

On the 1 hour mark (using DU meter):
1.19 GB download
347.1 kB/sec

Not bad. I will update with the completion.
I am downloading the following:
HL2 (838 MB)
Counter-Strike:Source (939 MB)
HL2 DM (47MB)
HL:Source (766 MB)
Condition Zero (384 MB)
Condition Zero Deleted Scenes (427 MB)

I had all the others already installed.

As is to be expected, some servers are really laggy (even if you get a good ping to them, you may end up lagging your arse off). This is because the server is overworked. There are a lot of things that need calcultating (phys gun takes a lot of bandwidth compared to a normal weapon) and thus a server than can normally run a 16 person+ server should really keep it to 12 or lower for HL 2 DM.

Really fun, btw..

I'm just happy I can play single-player Half-Life 2 again.

But for how long...

HL2 DM is one of the funniest mods I've ever played. I'm not entirely sure why, but watching as 3 players circle strafe each other getting squished by a car that someone rolled over on them makes me giggle like a schoolgirl.

On one server the admin had the push physics up so that you can push objects by firing at them (almost like firing them with the physgun). Well you could also push cars pretty far too, and eventually get them airborn. People would fire at them and make them airborn really high in the air, then run near where it would land, and as someone approached, watched as the car came down and squished their opponent like a bug.

There were many moments while playing this mod where I had to actually get out of my chair to stop myself from laughing.

Good times.

It looks like could be fun if it wasn't for the horrible lag, very reminiscent of when I played the BF1942 demo on a 56k modem which was next to unplayable.

Cs:source runs like a dream compared to this.

I think it has to do more with the servers than the netcode. Played on several 32 player servers earlier today with a ping in the 70 range. Last night however when it was all just listen servers there were 4 player servers that were lagging.

Half-Life 2 deathmatch is awesome!! Just find a good server with no lag and you're set! I could play it all day. Puts more life into lan parties.

Too bad the first server I got on the admin was cheating with no clip and full weapons /ammo cheats. I said to him "your a cheating bastard" and he's like "so, I'm the admin!" I ended up killing him a dozen times before he killed me.

There are idiots in this world, and that happens for every game. That is why the quality servers last so long, cause they aren't pricks like that on the server.

That's because most servers are listen servers with crap CPUs on ADSL. Just like every single other game release that starts out with "terrible lag" and then everyone later thinks "thank goodness they finally fixed that crappy netcode, what were they thinking!?" when they hadn't changed anything. Seriously, we have to listen to this complaint with every single FPS MP game release, and people never seem to get a clue. When all the good dedicated start coming in, it'll increase the quality of the server pool significantly.

I think the server plugin interface shit is broken.

Anyone manage to get a server plugin to load yet?
