Half-Life 2 Surprise = Deathmatch

A post by Valve's Adrian Finol to the Steam Users Forums (thanks MonkeyBrains) reveals that Half-Life 2 deathmatch is the surprise announcement they recently hinted about (story). The post simply links to this image, which says the proverbial thousand words about our upcoming opportunity to throw more than just the kitchen sink at each other.

Wow, I finally managed to find a lag free server last night and it was the most fun I have had with a multiplayer game in a long while.

Spawn camping with the magnum never gets old!!!

Actually Hump, I did the same thing. and I was able to jump again in the next room. but I quickly lost the jump ability again a couple rooms later.

At least I don't have any more NPCs blocking my escape from certain death. can't TELL you how many times I was killed because an NPC was standing around in the same doorway I needed to run through. they don't stay put when you tell them to, either.

Yep - I played last night and it was ~40 ping for me... and it was smooth. Like a LAN. I didn't once notice artifacts of glitching or lagging.

Not only that, but the lagcomp seems to be right on. Thats more than 99% of other games ever bother to do.

Agreed. When a new popular mod comes out, idiots who don't know how to run a server put up a server. They do it on slow computers, or PLAY on the same server they are HOSTING on, or any other dozen things that make the game run like crap. Normally, that server would stay EMPTY all the time because it sucks, and it would get taken back down. But... with 50 thousand people who want to try DM, and only 100 servers, people will join the crappy servers too.

After a couple weeks, the idjits who don't know how to run a server will take them back down, and/or people will stop playing on them, as enough servers come out.

This happened to me too. It's a bug, possibly caused by JUMPING just before you get put into the metal-casket-trasnport thingy. When I played HL2 a second time a couple days ago, it did not happen, but I was careful not to jump when I got in. Instead, just press the use key.

I posted a bug about it, I presume it'll get fixed in some future patch.

usualy if a game plays laggy even though the connection isn't, usualy means it is the server that is slow. I have no doubt some of the servers you will find on the first day are not dedicated, and may even be a severly underpowered computer, simply cause people dont know any better.

I don't think Valve intended anyone to be playing it for long tho, which is why we only got two maps. and they want other people to make maps for 'em

I think it was to appease the masses that wanted Deathmatch. Financially supporting a deathmatch mode I dont think would pay off for them in the long run, so they release an extremely basic package and let the public make the maps.

I've been saying this all along, you can't argue with the 50,000+ people playing CounterStrike at any given time compared to the 300 people playing HLDM at any given time.

Personally I'd rather they just focus on DoD:Source and the new single player levels they stated they are working on. But at least make HL2DM playable, cus its horrible atm.

What a buggy piece of rushed out crap. Well all you whiners wanted Deathmatch...you got it in record time and it plays like shit.

It's not the servers that are laggy, its the game. I was on a server that showed me 23 ping in browser and 80 ping in game and it was still laggy as hell. It's a cool idea, but right now its just not worth playing. I do look forward to playing on a map that uses only the Energy Balls as ammo for the grav gun, no other weapons...and you only have about 10secs to let it go before it explodes in your face.

yeah i'm bored of it too. I don't think Valve intended anyone to be playing it for long tho, which is why we only got two maps. and they want other people to make maps for 'em, and they have no problem throwing cash at the person in return. lol.

Installed smoothly and runs nicely. Hard to find lag-free servers, but when I do it is the best fun I've had in a MP game for quite a while. The Grav Gun is so much fun that I don't even bother to check my score any more.

I don't know what the problem is

There was a problem with the update. They acknowledged it, and added the fix. My guess is that the others got the update prior to the fix and others got it afterwards. If you are still having problems - restarting Steam will apparently get you the fix.

I'd post a link to the Steam forum thread/post that stated this, but I lost it in the clusterfuck that is the Steam forums. Sorry. (All the Valve employee said was that it was fixed and to restart Steam - you aren't missing much)

laffo, and by not downloading it they wouldn't have HL2DM.
I don't know what the problem is, I opened steam, and I opened the monitor, and waited like a good little boy for it to finish. NO problems here.

But...

without steam, users could have been alerted to the offending patch, on forums such as this one for example, and held off on the download until the devs corrected the patch.

kinda like HL1 and well; every other game on the planet.

it's not so much Steam, as it is Steam patched the HL2 and CS:S games up to where some people can't play. It's a patch problem of some kinda funky nature, coulda happened without Steam

Am I reading correctly, that some people can't even play SP because of a steam problem?

No, that would be beyond stupid.

Spanky, same thing happened to me. Not sure if its a bug either. if it isn't they sure didn't make it clear what's happening.

anyhoo, theres a part where you need to jump over a low railing. what I did was pull one of those Combine monitors off the wall and placed it next to the railing making a nakeshift ramp so i could get over.

EDIT: You get your jumping ability back once you clear the railing.
