Rainbow Six 4 Announced

Ubisoft Announces a new Episode in the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® Franchise on PlayStation®2, Xbox® and PC is the press release with the announcement Rainbow Six 4: No Subtitle Revealed, the next installment in the tactical shooter series. Here's a bit:
Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, today announced its plans to launch a new Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six opus on PlayStation®2, Xbox® and PC during Spring 2005. The game is being developed by two of Ubisoft's award-winning studios: Red Storm Entertainment, the maker of the original Rainbow Six, & Ubisoft's Montreal Studios.

In this new episode, you lead Team Rainbow, the world's most elite counter-terrorist unit, as they are called into action and unfamiliar territory to battle a bioterrorist threat. Stakes escalate as they are personally targeted by an evil terrorist organization. Used to protecting the lives of others, Team Rainbow must now embark on a mission to fight and save some of their own.

The next Rainbow Six installment will build on the ingredients that have made the Rainbow Six® franchise a runaway success, and will introduce new single player experience with a personal darker storyline, state-of-the-art equipment, and offer gamers the chance to play as two members of Team Rainbow: Ding Chavez, the fearless leader of Team Rainbow, and a new sniper role portrayed by Dieter Weber, who must cover his team's movement with deadly accuracy.

As soon as I saw "PlayStation®2, Xbox® and PC", I knew it was a lost cause. I've played a bit of GR2, and I can't believe they destroyed the game that I had so much fun playing when I was supposed to be studying. No doubt we'll be bunny-hopping through this one, obliterating tangos with rocket launchers.
Congratulations, Ubisoft. You've gone and made me cry.

Looks like their doing to RS4 what they did to GR2...make it "fun" and less realistic for simpletons that are afraid of one shot one kill type games.

They took the console port of RS3 in a significantly different direction from the PC version. My guess is that RS4 is a sequel to the console port, not the pc version.

edit: since the fucking GR2 ad is running at the top of the page right now, I wanted to point out that the soldier they have plastered all over the marketing material would get a NO-GO on the Perform Individual Camoflauge common task. He hasn't completely camoflauged his face and has applied loam where there should be light green and vice versa. Loam on shine areas and light green on shadow areas damn it!

Oh, the one saving grace from "Sum" was Liev Shreiber or whatever his name is... John Clark is just *the* badass.

A bad ass who needs a flashlight to get from an inflatable boat to an abandoned weapons lab? The real John Clark wouldn't need a fucking flashlight. That's probably what pissed me off most about the Sum of All Fears. That, Ben Affleck and the complete removal of all excitement from the opening of the movie.

I actually liked Clear and Present Danger the movie quite a bit, and yes I have read the book. It certainly deviated from the book quite a bit but you have to if you're going to squeeze 850 pages into two hours.

From the screenshots and teaser trailer I think it's safe to say that RS3 will be the last "realistic" iteration of the series. Looks like their doing to RS4 what they did to GR2...make it "fun" and less realistic for simpletons that are afraid of one shot one kill type games.

Damn right, I picked up a copy of RvS for $10 (about $7 US) on Sunday and have played countless hours coop, the most fun I've ever had with coop ever.

All I know is, this had better include co-op multiplay. For that was the last, and currently remains the best co-op style first person shooter I have, and have played; with 3 or 4 other folks on a lan it's one of the few games of it's type to have something you can all play together towards a goal rather than competing against each other.

Oh, you mean how they changed the storyline from following Ding and Mr. Clark around to a purely Harrison-driven film?

Suckiness indeed.

edit:

Oh, the one saving grace from "Sum" was Liev Shreiber or whatever his name is... John Clark is just *the* badass. All I can say is that if they make a movie about John, Domingo, and the rest, they'd better do some halfway decent casting and Tom himself had better be there as script analyst... or it'll have it's share of suckiness. Dafoe is definitely not John Clark.

what was wrong with Clear and Present danger?

I don't know how the movie was on its own, but it was the single worst interpretation of a Clancy book so far. It didn't just change some of the details, it utterly destroyed one of Clancy's best. The movie may have been OK if you haven't read the book, but read it and then rent the movie. It is almost enough to make you cry.

Tom Clancy is rolling over in his bed of money
(edited for accuracy)

I'm guessing I've read about half of the tom clancy books, they're all fun airport trash. Somehow I cant see him sitting nit picking about the lack of realism and whatnot.

There should be PROPER realism games damnit. When your guy gets caught by a grenade, your computer should explode and kill you and <blah blah blah some utter nonsense as frequently spouted by some military obsessive who'd never spend a day in the army because of the certainty of it failign to live up to the hopes and dreams>.

And RvS sucked. Nice idea, craply implemented and with a crap publisher.

Dissapointing to see Redstorm Entertainment so clearly changing gears and trying to make a fun action game for kids on the Xbox and PS2....oh and the PC too.

On a hopeful not, if they intend to make a CS style game that incorporates more realism and has better enviroment interaction then mabye it will do pretty well for PC.

What was wrong with Clear and Present danger? I liked that movie alot, worlds better than sum of all fears. Affleck has a real talent for making awful war movies.

Awesome but I'm scared, developed w/ PS2/Xbox. They said they are making 2 versions, hopefully one is the PC and the other is PS2/Xbox. Anyways GR2 looks way sucky on the PC but I hope I am wrong. SWAT 4 could be our last hope.

I remember seeing an interview on BookTV with Clancy, and when asked about some of the games by some callers, Tom Clancy said that he sold the "Clancy Games" branding to red storm entertainment several years ago. He has literally nothing to do with any of the games. He was rather insistent that he does no consulting for any of the series at this point...

If this does turn out to be another console port with sutiply simplified controls, araced style gameplay adn the rest, lets just all pray to our respective gods that SWAT 4 will stay true to the very realistic gameplay. And if that fails, i hope that new Close Combat game will be realistic.

I'm getting sick of fairy tale shooters now. I want realism. And proper realism. Get shot in the arm, you can't aim, shot in the leg, u cant walk properly, a stamina bar that doesnt magically regenerate to full after to slow to a jog etc, etc.

Actually, I recall him having some serious objections to them including the 'threat indicator' in the original Ghost Recon because it was too unrealistic. I can't see them having gotten his approval for any of the last few "Tom Clancy's" games that were more fantasy then military.

he's probably just wondering what he was thinking when he signed the contract with Ubi.

Oh, I dunno. If he didn't have a stroke over the butcher job Hollywood did on "Clear and Present Danger" and "Sum of All Fears" then I'm sure he looks at the game series and just sort of shrugs.

Great - now we get to sit back and watch Ubisoft turn another classic Clancy franchise into a mindless arcade action game. It will, no doubt, but thoroughly simplified for 'accessibility' and bear absolutely no resemblence to the core gameplay that established the series.

Tom Clancy is rolling over in his grave. Well, he would be if he were dead. For now, he's probably just wondering what he was thinking when he signed the contract with Ubi.
