They are to start charging a monthly fee to use Steam.
You've paid your money for HL2 and got Steam. Welcome to their world, they make the rules and can change them at will.
You have a licence to play to HL2 under their teams and when they decide.
I'll admit, they could technically do what you're saying. But there's no way they'd do it.
At most, they'd offer the OPTION of paying a subscription.
For example, if you want, you can pay a monthly subscription for Half-Life 2 if you don't want to actually buy. I mean, face it, how often do you play a game for a few weeks and never touch it again? Those of that that bought it can keep playing, but someone who just wants to play it through once can "rent" it for the month.
Just because they COULD be assholes and make you pay a subscription, doesn't mean they will. Just because Russia could have nuked the US several times over doesn't mean they did.
