Half-Life 2 Stuttering Update, SDK & Surprise Plans

Steam News offers an update on the Half-Life 2 stuttering bug, as well as promised of the release of the Half-Life 2 SDK and a "surprise" soon:
The changes in this release are directed at reducing the problem some users are experiencing with sound stuttering. The sound stuttering is not indicative of a sound problem, sound stuttering is only a symptom of texture thrashing on your video card or AGP memory. For information on how to reduce texture thrashing visit this link on our support site:

http://steampowered.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=280

This update will fix sound stuttering that users were experiencing that would last for longer than a few seconds during normal gameplay. This update will also eliminate this same behavior following a quicksave or autosave. There will still be a short pause while the autosave happens, but not the more drawn out stuttering behavior.

We are still investigating another performance problem on some hardware, which will manifest where the game is getting into a state where performance drops to less than 5 fps and does not recover or crashes.

Next week we will be releasing the Source SDK, along with a surprise for the community.

@ 163 --

Good God this board kills me... I usually remain pretty quiet and just lurk around but Jesus...

Just because the EULA says all that shit doesn't mean that they're going to do ANY of it. They have to protect themselves from asshats that will exploit the tiniest loophole in the aggreement. Since when did Valve become the evil entity some of you seem to make them... it's a game. a GAME... if you don't like it or disagree with the EULA, don't freakin play it, take your toys and go home, but PLEASE STFU.

Thank you.

that's right little boy ... run home.

Somehow, that's a little different than your quote
No, what I stated can be legally done by Valve per the Steam EULA. It is directly stated that Valve can change the Steam billing terms at any time, and that term is in the contract for a reason.

That's like me saying "Well, due to their EULA, Valve COULD CLAIM OWNERSHIP OF THE MOON TOMORROW!!!!! OMFG!!!"
Actually, that is the about the only thing which Valve can't do according to the EULA.

http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=subscriber_agreement

The highlights (or rather "lowlights") include:

"In the case of a one-time purchase of a product license (e.g., purchase of a single game) from Valve, Valve may choose to terminate or cancel your Subscription in its entirety or may terminate or cancel only a portion of the Subscription (e.g., access to the software via Steam) and Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide access (for a limited period of time) to the download of a stand-alone version of the software and content associated with such one-time purchase."

So, Valve can limit or terminate completely your ability to play Half-Life 2 at any time even though you supposedly "bought" it.

"Valve may amend this Agreement at any time in its sole discretion. As a Subscriber, you agree that Valve may amend the terms of this Agreement."

Valve can change Steam and your use of it at any time in any way.

"YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT YOUR SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR ANY DISPUTE WITH VALVE WITH REGARD TO STEAM OR THE STEAM SOFTWARE IS TO DISCONTINUE USE OF STEAM AND CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT."

Don't like some change Valve has made to Steam? Tough sh*t! Your only recourse is to cancel your Steam account.

"Valve reserves the right to change our fees or billing methods at any time and Valve will provide notice of any such change in at least thirty (30) days advance."

Valve is free to change its fees for using Steam at any time.

Read it and weep. Then again, since you were dumb enough to subscribe to and use Steam without first reading this, then you deserve what you get.

No game is worth putting up with that sh*t.

The EULA for Steam already specifies that Valve can begin charging a fee for the use of the service at any time following notification.

They offered a good for sale. You bought the good. The transaction took place.
Actually you are wrong. Personal computer software including games is licensed not sold to consumers. When you bought Half-Life 2 you actually only bought a license to use the software per Valve's license agreements.

They cannot change the terms of the transaction afterwards. You purchased HL2, they cannot charge you to use it.
If you read the license agreement for Half-Life 2 and Steam, you will see that Valve can indeed change the terms by which you, the licensee, can use Half-Life 2 and Steam or even revoke the license. The EULA for Steam already specifies that Valve can begin charging a fee for the use of the service at any time following notification.

No more than any other developer.
LOL! That's true only if the "other" developer is 3D Realms.

Need we bring out the "DOOM 3 - COMING 2003" banners again?
No one from ID ever promised Doom 3 would be released in 2003. Activision's marketing department made that banner.

I think the surprise will be something out of the classic Philip K. Dick novel, UBIK:

Jump in the urinal
And stand on your head
Valve is alive
And we are all dead!

I mean, think about it, half-life in the novel was a frozen existence as the brain stem slowly died, maybe Valve and sTeam are ways for this corporation to thaw us out and give us new life, but as corporate zombie slaves, or something.

I mean, if you have enough chewing gum, rubber bands, and the foil from your chewing gum, you should be able to connect the goddamned dots.

I mean, if I'm alive right now, where is my body?

Do you see it anywhere? Where does this voice come from? Where do any of our voices come from?

Why do we need to connect to sTeam for single player? Maybe they're using our frozen minds as some sort of super processor, all linked together to support some common reality but if you refuse to let sTeam connect, it doesn't have the same kick.

Leo Bulero
Glenn Runciter
Palmer Eldritch
Gabe Newell
Allegra Geller
Barry Convex

All creators or overseers and merchants of false realities.

'Though we should all keep playing because the exit door leads in. Plus, we really don't have any choice in the matter.

I don't get what this whole thing is with people needing to see their feet in a FPS game.

I guess in Real Life(TM) when I look down, my feet are there but I don't really go, "Oh! Gee whiz! Feet! And they're mine!"

I guess I do purposefully look at them if I think I've stepped in something or have a pebble in my shoe, but I kind of always know they're there.

I don't really notice my hands when I type either.

Maybe I should try Halo 2 to see if I get some great revelation from foot gazing. Its not just a console game is it?

In all seriousness, HL 2 is hands down the best single player FPS of all time, and I think it's foolish to deny that...

The more I play H-L2, the more I think Deus Ex is the best FPS ever. It's a shame they couldn't repeat the formula for DX2, or so I hear.

H-L2 is good but it feels to me more like a walkthough then a game, so far.

I'd think that the most likely reason for a (non gfx) memory error is...... spyware/other apps running or bad memory on your machine.

games like HL2 will take up more ram and thrash more unforgivingly than most other applications, tried checking your sys thoroughly with spybot and memtest86 yet?
