Half-Life 2 Stutter Patch Follow-up

A note on PlanetHalf-Life (thanks BFSolo) from yesterday indicates that Valve is now anticipating the release of the no stuttering patch for Half-Life 2 (story) sometime today: "We're still working through some testing on this release. It might be something we'll want to hold for another day and release tomorrow."

I am miserably stuck in the game and was hoping someone here would be kind enough to throw a hint my way.

SST: I am at the point in the game when you enter what appears to be a prison complex and I have several Ant Lions helping me. I am outside in the courtyard where I am being fired upon by guys in the gaurd towers and a couple of gunships. I have yet to find an entrance inside (which is where I'm assuming I need to wind up). Am I missing something really obvious or is there a trick involved in order to progress?

Well, I am on the prison level... hopefully I am only halfway through the game. It would suck if I played through the entire game with this bug. I mean, the stutter issue has been a pock mark on an otherwise beautiful game.

SST: Destroy the gunships. Thats why the endless supply of rockets is next to the dumpster looking thing. IMO that's the most frustrating part of the game.

Run around, two gun ships should appear, try to shoot them down (look for a rocket ammo box), one will shot at you and shoot a hole in the wall if i remember right (right near the rocket ammo box)... hope it helps

well the patch would have been too late if it was out a week ago, wtf didn't they fix it before release, i don't believe you can miss something like that in beta tests

JM - I'm on the same level... You really can't miss the entrance. Just take out all of the enemies then explore. This part is not meant to stump you man. You can figure it out with out a hint.

I'm having the stuttering problem, but I'm also having another problem that may or may not be related. I've just started Ravenholm and I get a lot of sounds that are crackly and fuzzy, for lack of a better way to descibe it. Every time the guy in the windows speaks, it's almost unintelligible because of the crackling. I've tried adjusting my snd_mixahead (if that even helps) to know avail. Help!

Yes, the two gunships part really sucks. I had to switch it to Easy and run around that boxcar like a fool, hitting the ammo box every circuit, in order to live. The GD antlions got in the way more than anything else.. I keep forgetting to throw the bait off somewhere so they would leave.

IMO that's the most frustrating part of the game.

Really? I LOVED that part! It was like a Bruckheimer movie!

The key to the gunships is firing as they fly over head, and letting the rockets hit them from behind. If you fire when they're coming at you, you have to try and corkscrew the rocket to get it to hit (so they can't shoot it down).

I totally agree. I've noticed it here and there, but (SST) cruising along the coast, just past the quite cool bridge sequence, where textures are constantly being loaded, it stuttered to the point of completely ruining the immersion. I think one of the main reasons I'll replay the single player sooner than later is to experience the game stutter-free.

Problems on the gunships? They're pretty easy to shoot down if you know the trick...

s{If you're having problems with the gunships shooting down your rockets, realize that the rockets get shot down when you fire them straight at the gunship. Simply fire off to the side a bit, wait for the rocket to pass the gunship, and THEN train your laser guide on the gunship. The rocket will turn around and hit the gunship from the rear. You shouldn't have any misses with this technique!}

I had zero problems with stuttering until I got past Nova Prospekt. I've played a few hours beyond and it is terrible. I can't believe this wasn't picked up in beta testing.
