Half-Life 2 Stutter Patch Follow-up

A note on PlanetHalf-Life (thanks BFSolo) from yesterday indicates that Valve is now anticipating the release of the no stuttering patch for Half-Life 2 (story) sometime today: "We're still working through some testing on this release. It might be something we'll want to hold for another day and release tomorrow."

Hey 'c r i s p y',

Thanksgiving was quite a long, stuffing ordeal. Just got home and saw your reply.

Yes. Actually there are several alternatives out there to incorporate diskless booting to an MS Domain/NIS or IP or Peer network. Most of the solution I've seen are quite expensive, I believe $5,000.00 to $25,000.00 per site seats? Granted Symantec Ghost imaging is less expensive on the low end requirement (and has it's limitations). But who the hell wants to ghost a new system? When you can network boot a new workstation or server anywhere in the world without a floppy, USB device, or cdrom based for any standard or non-standard hardware config.

There *WAS* an open source product developed by two swiss students that could work with any operating system as long as you were willing to modify it yourself (not selling it for profit) and communicate with other users in the forum and inform them of what actions to take to overcome undocument issues with Unix/Dos/Windows/Mac boot environments. Unfortunately, helping ended up being quite non-productive because everyone had questions, but no one reciprocated any common courtesy to reply to those that helped them. So I gave up helping people with their Windows 2003,2000,NT4.0, Cisco and other OS problems. They just didn't listen or care. lots of foriegners also frequented the forum. It was hilarious some of the question they had. But, it's all good.

Now the product is owned by a swiss business. Is no longer free and very expensive and if you don't have the source from the original project you are stuck with the status quo (Microsoft, Symantec or them). Personally I enjoy building any system or working on any system anywhere in the world by simple commands at my finger tips. Sending magic packets to WOL compliant systems and building away.

"i.e. breaking the rules... NO LIMITS"

Anyway, if you are looking for something... I can tell you were to go. Email or your choice.

Yep, thanks, dude.

I'm using RIS on my setup, but of course it only allows installations, not diskless bootstrapping. I was hoping there was a solution for doing this in Windows (I've heard that they're out there).

Ha, Ha.. what do you mean 'c r i s p y'? I'm using that OS that microsoft has so graciously given us the right to use called Windows XP professional (XP build 2600). And my own modified version of a UNIX based Network Installation AP thanks to the fellas from Geneva, Switzerland.

You know diskless installs and stuff with scripted installations???

I give Microsoft RIS the finger because it only supports Window NT variant images. I like the freedom of use for Unix/Linux variations and DOS and Windows family for 16 bit to 32 (soon 64 bit).

I hope/think I answered your question???

I noticed Steam took longer to load up today. Checked the monitor, and sure enough HL2 and CS:CZ were sitting at 100%. Except I got no notification that this was happening. I checked that I had it set for Steam to notify me of updates, but nothing. Strange.

Next. I'll be networking booting a new install of Windows XP Pro to measure the performance differential of SATA vs ATA.

What software/OS combo are you using to accomplish this?

A damn fine level. You like the game so far?
Yessir. It's a little linear as others have noted, but it looks amazing. Just the small visual touches that grab you like the water and magnifying glasses. That was so cool to see that they actually worked. I can't wait for the mods.

edit: Remind me when I make a FPS to not have dark areas. That's one thing that's getting on my nerves, even with gamma cranked.

I also seem to have fixed my stuttering problem. Between what I did and the new patch, I'm now able to play again with textures on high as well as surround sound.

I even played some CS:S for the first time ever at the LAN party I was at on Saturday. I mean that was the first time for CS of any kind for me. Between that and UT2k4 (DM & Onslaught), it was 5:30am before we knew what happened!

Anyone notice how Steam parallels the current state of affairs in America?

Let's take a look:
-In the real world, 9/11 is being used as an excuse to slowly take away privacy.
-In the Internet world, piracy is being used as an excuse to slowly take away privacy.

Hence, Steam is the "War on Terror"
And Gabe? None other then GWB.

All jokes aside, in that Gamespot piece awhile back, Gabe talked about some SP "ATI levels" that were designed for use with high end video cards...I'm assuming those'll be posted at some point.

care to share with the group on how you did that?

Are you asking me how I blocked STEAM with my router? I'm not sure who your question is referring too honestly. If you are asking me, then the answer is simple, I just watched my Outbound Logs on the router as I started up STEAM, you should see what ports it opens to communicate. In my case, I blocked a range of ports as it seemed everytime I closed one port it opened a new port, once I blocked the range I saw it using I finally got the "Offline Mode" button consistantly.

When I check Blues and I see that there is a patch coming from Valve I'll let STEAM run, why does it need to be on all the time? I'm playing a single player game and it works just fine, I don't want it to patch so I get stuttering problems. I'll patch it when I feel I need to patch it. I felt that the old HL1 Update Utility worked great and I started it from time to time and it automatically updated when it saw I was out of date, but it didn't need to run all the time.

Wow, Furious maybe next you should rip half the plug out on your hard drive while it's running and take it back if anything wierd happens.

Thanks for assuming that I was crying conspircy theory asshole. All I was trying to do is NOT have STEAM run while I played a game that did not need (or should not need) an internet connection, or for me to have to jump through hoops to not have STEAM run to play a SP version of a game. I never said I thought STEAM was spyware, so fuck off. Yes, I'm sure fucktards like yourself need utility programs like STEAM to do everything for you. Go plug yourself back into the Valve machine and spread the good word brother, amen.
