Out of the Blue

I was already running a little behind this morning, and a little plumbing problem set me even further back. According to our friendly neighborhood plumber, the pipe to the radiator in our second-floor bathroom, which had apparently been rusting for years, finally failed, causing a (thankfully minor) flood in the basement. Turns out this is sort of good news that this finally came to a head, as he says this was impeding the heat on the second floor as well as my office above, so having the pipe repaired may well help us keep our house warmer.

Its actually a bit easier if you don't take out the 2 rocket launching patrol vehicles.

Maybe so, but what's the fun in that? I like to leave nothing alive behind me, if possible (within reason, of course). Sometimes it helps, sometimes I find you get to kill them later from a better vantage point (see Doom3 in Hell with those 3? rocket-launching dudes and the moving rock trying to crush you on the walkway for an example).

Wow, and people say the sandwich shop up the street from where I work is expensive at $6-7 per sandwich.

$28k for a sandwich and it doesn't even have onions? I'll pass. Besides, it's not even fresh.

Warhawk (SST about where you are in HL2):

the part where I'm in the airboat-thing and I shot down a PITA bomb-dropping helicopter in a relatively open area. I had to get out and turn a handle on a platform to open a gate to proceed. Am I near a dam or something? I just took out the 2 rocket-launching vehicles and drove under the dock to jump into a tunnel to get to this location.

Its actually a bit easier if you don't take out the 2 rocket launching patrol vehicles. Just rush through that section and evade them. Interestingly, I didn't even know they were takeable-outable. I tried to destroy the one that shows up earlier in the game, but made the assumption that they're not there to be destroyed, but to be evaded.

Those gunships ARE pita though, plenty more to come. Better hope you find better weaponry soon.

I tend to agree, with the notable exception of Get Fuzzy

that is a good one... along with FoxTrot and Frazz.

did you see the Get Fuzzy earlier this week where Bucky has Jason (from foxtrot) and the little kid from Family Circus on a rotisserie over a fire, and the family circus kid is saying "Mommy! I'm Burning!"... priceless!

When Zathrus is playing a game I'm not particularly into, we negotiate play time. I'll do something else for a while (hour or two) while he plays. In addition, he tends to wake earlier than me on weekends, so that gives him quiet-gaming time when I'm not up to bug him or to begin the day of errands/chores/tending to the offspring.

The biggest issue I have with Z playing FPS? The fact that he turns all of the lights off in our office. I end up trying to sort mail/surf in the glow of the monitor. It's too hard on the eyes.

Looks to Zathrus and Heather

You summoned me?

We like playing MMORPG games together (currently CoH). I play FPS's far more than she does though. Right now I can pretty much guess I'm the least far along in HL2 -- I'm enjoying it, but only play in small spurts because I'd rather play CoH with her (and she'd rather it as well). Most of the non-gaming time goes to that -- non-gaming. Work, housework, playing with/taking care of the kiddo, etc.

Are there problems with the whole worlds colliding bit? Sometimes. I get a lot of grief if I get her killed...

I personally am looking forward to the questions such as "Why is the sky blue?" and "How come a mirror reflects what's in it?" - these are golden chances to completely befuddle the little brains they have.

Like that Calvin and Hobbes cartoon? Where Calvin asks why old pictures and movies are black and white, and his dad tells him the world didn't turn color until recently?

Interesting note for those that bought the nin dual disc...on my dvd (reader) drive, I couldn't read the cd-audio side, but the dvd side read fine. On my dvd burner, I could read both sides...

Called 2 more places in town...still no SACD version.

I'm thinking nin is designed for 5.1, given the number of layers of audio Reznor threw on there. I've never heard the deep breath he takes at the beginning of Mr. Self Destruct before...

edit: Holy shit! Eraser sounds totally different from what I'm used to!

Worst smell ever? Easy, a pre-treatment plant for a mushroom farm. Bleh.

Worst smell ever? About 2 years ago, me and my brother in a car. I was driving, he farted, man....it was bad. I immediately had to roll the windows down, it was not enough, I had to pull over, get out of the car and throw up. Keep in mind I have spent many a hours in rooms with thousands of rats and mice, and lot’s of time in the area responsible for their waste disposal…..I seriously tried to convince him to go see a doctor, I thought someone had to be really wrong with him.

Hey Bronco, Warpig asked this yesterday, and I'm kinda curious about the answer: On your job, how do you deal with the smell? Do you just stick some mentho-something up your nose and call it a day?

While you never get used to it eventually you just accept it. We use nothing to compensate for the smell.

Damn.

Not that I expect to be able to play with my cans-connected-to-each-other-with-string modem, but the @#%$$% patch is killing me. Enabling and disabling the peer-to-peer option, I am getting about 1MB every two hours.

WTF?!?

Also, what is up with the disparity between the "downloaded" amount and the actual/percentage amount?

Thinking I may get to try having it not run tomorrow,
RaymArden

Edit: Bah @ Blizzard. After numerous attempts, I finally have a "good" connection from Blizzard. Though still in HPB land, I have downloaded a good 6MB-7MB since I originally posted this.

I'm thinking I'm going to buy the Bronze edition off of Steam.

Go for it. I kind of feel ripped off by the Gold Edition I got (with $40 off because I had a half-life 2 voucher from someone else's video card) and really would have been satisfied with the Bronze edition. Although I like the hat and the postcard, everything else included was disappointing.

While you're there, here's something you can do that's a fun little extra in the game (i.e., not critical to the plot).

Get full health after you go through the gate (the one you've already raised). Do what you gotta do in there first if you want, but before you leave that side of the gate, look along the border of the valley for 2 sewer grates in the wall. One of them will be partially open. Stack some stuff up and run inside. You'll lose a lot of health from the sewage, but don't worry about it, just keep going until you've found the secret area.
