Alpha Centauri was a great game (far better than Civ3 in many, many ways), but it just suffered from the problem of having a bunch of nameless nations that had even more nameless units once you were able to customize them to the level it allowed

If you read the quote, the new game is titled "Sid Meier's Pirates!", whereas the old game is "Pirates!" (or Pirates! Gold), and the original pirates has been universially recognized as one of the top games of all time... to be honest, it even stands there today, despite instability issues on newer os's (Gold actually works fairly decently on OS's up to 2k, I believe it has some issues with XP)

What kind of hat is it, because theoretically you could be wearing a piece of lettuce and referring to it as your hat. And as such, if you were to eat it, I would not be very ammused.

I'm sure Bloodlines is giving them a run for their money.

If bloodlines sells 10% of what HL2 does, I will eat my hat.

ts tough to compete with HL2....

I'm sure Bloodlines is giving them a run for their money. At least for me it is. I can't seem to put down Bloodlines.. been doing about 75 percent bloodlines, 25 percent HL2, in my evenings...

Saying Alpha Centauri is the highest rated game in the history of PC Gamer...

This was before they got bad.

[edit] oh... and if you *played* it you would see that it deserves it. [/edit]

Anyone have a link to a review? I never followed the development of this game, but I'll give it a try if the reviews are positive.

And in case anyone is curious, I didn't play the first Pirates seeing as how I was four when it was released.

Actually, I agree with mysticgeek. It looked to me like that chick was talking about the new game, not the old game.

And the dude only brought up age because everyone else was. Why? Who gives a fuck? Play the game.

"Pirates!® is recognized as one of the greatest games ever created...

This is a true statement and a valid one as Pirates released by Microprose was one of the best games ever made along with Silent Service, F-16, and a little gem called Civilization.

And as far as your statement goes that your like 40 something what does that matter?
You admit to not even playing this game and in your earlier post was being sarcastic towards the marketing statement by Atari"which is true btw" then you try to cover up your stupidy by saying oh im older than most of you cept that the age has rotted out your memory or you never were into games untill recentley or you reallly are 15 perpin to be 40 something which btw IDGAF so you can take a bow mysticgeek. you fool

You're 42? You sure don't sound like it. My guess is 17.

Oh thanks! That's one of the kindest things someone's said to me in a long time. Yeah, I do feel like I'm 17 again. It's great. You're only as old as you feel!

Thanks buddy, made my day!

You show your age and your ignorance with a comment like that. Pirates! _is_ one of the greatest games ever created. It's obvious that you have never played it. Were you even born when it came out? Somehow I doubt it.

Lol, why is everyone jumping over how old people are around here? Not EVERYONE played this game when it came out you know. I know because I didn't play it...yes, I've played games since around 1979...but no, this never crossed my path. So shoot me. Sheesh. Get over yourselves.

Who recognizes this? What review out there has this in it? Oh, the Vice President of Marketing at Atari says this...ah.

So she recognized it as such. Wow, so it's kinda lucky she's also marketing it too! What a lucky gal!

Saying Alpha Centauri is the highest rated game in the history of PC Gamer, DEFINATELY isnt saying much. PC Gamer reviewers dont always play the games they review.. and as such, their reviews are meaningless, IMO anyways.

That being said, Sid Meier is definately one of the gaming gods and the original pirates was a great game, not the best ever, but tons of fun!!!

I'm sure most kids on this site hadn't even been potty trained when this game came out.

Actually, I'm probably older than anyone else here...lol. Yes, older people play video games. Got hooked to computer games back in 1979 on my Apple II (wish I still had that btw)

But I was commenting on it as if the NEW version of the game was the one the VP of marketing was refering to. Not the original...which by the way I never played. Don't know why, just never crossed my path.

But perhaps the advice of S_DOG34 should be followed and just STFU.

Be aware that here is no demo yet, and no sign of one on the horizon, so unless you are 100% certain that the hype is justified, its going to be a $50 gamble buying this one.
Why can't they do a Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 and release a kickass demo? surely there is nothing to hide?
